"Am I saved? Am I born again? Can I be sure? If so, how?"

When I was young, I used to go around and around asking myself these questions. I would get on my knees and ask God, with whom I felt no connection at the time. I knew that Jesus said, "Ye must be born again" in John 3:7. I wanted to be sure I was.

I know that we here at CC have lots of doctrinal discussion and can often get into some gray areas that are still mysteries and not fully understood. Just thought that we should make a thread to establish whether or not we could be sure, and don't have to be worried about, whether we are going to heaven or hell if we should die before we wake.

Try to start with a 'yes' or 'no' and elaborate from there. Try to address the person that may wander through here seeking peace and blessed assurance.

Yes: 1 John 5:1-10 " Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God:by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the[a] Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

oyster67,

personal, intimate, threads such as this one, can to be a little difficult for some.
for expressing our most inner/secret feelings in matters such as this is quite the
Spiritual leap, but such a necessary one in order for us to claim/own/abide
in Christ's Holy reality.

it is a 'thinking' thread though and one that we all should ask ourselves
in all honesty and sincerity on a regular basis, for acknowledging our own
validity is most important if we claim to be a servant of Christ.

one form of evidence, is the proof to ourselves and others that we are indeed
a 'new-creature' in Christ.

Biblically we are either 'dead in the world' or we are in the state of being in the
state of 'God leading us to repentance, or we 'have received the sign of The Holy Spirit'.

if one is 'dead in the world', they will never have any desire to please their Maker.

the changes one will see in the 'repentant stage' of their calling out
are very obvious, things, such as what we are compelled to turn away from,
of what we are newly convicted of that we now know that Jesus would definitely
not approve of.
it just goes on and on from there, in the most profound ways, showing us that we
could/would never be able to 'over-come' by our own attempts.

the 'burning-desire' to please God and to be Holy, this is a strong evidence
of the 'sealing' of the Holy Spirit, although I must say, that we have witnessed,
especially at the 'beginning' of a 'so-called-conversion' that there may well be
a monumental zeal, but as time goes by, the heart will always bear witness
if this was indeed a 'true-calling-out' from our Saviour, or just an emotional
fervor, for as we know, satan is the most 'clever-imitator going about,
seeking whom he may devour.

searching down to our 'bare-bones' is such a revealing experience, and since
this must be done in solitude without distractions, sometimes the revealings
that we come to are not quite what we may expect, hence, Christ will give us the
chance to continue to grow and mature into the vessel that He may use for
His glory, I pray.

it is better to be in an honest state of repentance before our High Priest,
than to be in a 'fraudulent walk'.

Yes.

The Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the sons of God (Ro 8:16).

There is something in the heart that gives us to know that God is our Father, Jesus is our Savior,
and the Holy Spirit dwells within us.

..actually, hell is the grave. The lake of fire is where the ungodly will go at the judgement day.

Begotten and born again are both translated from the same word. ..interesting..and best if we search out these things for ourselves, if we really want to understand the difference...but nobody is "saved" yet..we are "begotten" if we walk according to Almighty, and have blessed hope for salvation/saved.

Don't expect many will agree..it's why I suggest searching it out for yourself..saved V begotten, and the Hebrew word they are translated from.:)

Are you joking here? Click your heals? ... No, open your heart sincerely and ask Jesus to pour into you," kneeling or with hands up is a personal preference " and tell Him you give up the world for Him, as He gave up His life on earth for you.. His only purpose was us, our only purpose should be for Him. God bless

Oyster the fact that you started this thread and by your own words ( I would get on my knees) an unsaved person don't do that. They go out to bars and roll and play in sin, laugh about it and call there friends to rejoice and post it on facebook. You are saved and the devil is a liar. You are on CC praising God, man sinners don't do that. Put on the helmet of salvation and call that devil what he is. Amen

Jesus, whom is God manifested in the flesh, took on flesh so as to become a sacrifice, atoning for sin in our stead.

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

The core of the gospel is that He died, was buried and raised himself from the dead (John 10:18), thus having overcome death and the grave. Now, to receive unto our selves what he has done for us, is to obey the gospel. That is to obey the death, burial, and resurrection.

Jesus said that we must be born again to enter the kingdom. Let's turn to John chapter three...

John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
[4] Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
[5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Born again is of water and spirit. And, without this we cannot enter the kingdom. In fact, the book of Acts will cross reference this in chapter two...

[37] Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
[38] Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Question: Why didn't Peter lead them through a sinner's prayer? Why didn't Peter say to accept Jesus as their personal saviour? Why didn't he say to simply "believe"? If there was ever a time to do all that, this certainly would have been it. The fact that NONE of that happened is because that is NOT the way to be saved.

However, Peter, filled with the HOLY SPIRIT, did say to obey the gospel, that is to symbolize the death, burial, and resurrection. Peter said...

1. Repent = death
2. Be water baptized for the remission of sin = burial
3. Receive Holy Spirit = resurrection

Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
[4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
[5] For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

Friend, there is only one way, the death, burial, resurrection, which is the straight and narrow...

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Matthew 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

God bless!

Can you know? I suggest that you must know. To have peace you must know. To have joy you must know. Rom 8:16 testifies that you can know. All of scripture is open to those who do know.

The still small voice of God is heard in the diligent prayerful study of Gods word. The sheep know the sound of His voice and they know to listen for it.

Even when you read all the scriptures posted above, it still comes down to FAITH. And faith is just a choice to believe. But when you make that choice, the Holy Spirit bears witness to your spirit that you belong to Christ.

We are saved by faith. In what God says.

You can know (by faith) that you are born again. Why do you think Christ established His Church and sent to us the Holy Spirit? To give us means for entering in the Life by participating in the death and resurrection of Christ.

..actually, hell is the grave. The lake of fire is where the ungodly will go at the judgement day.
Actually, Sheol is the grave, Hades is the part of Sheol where the unjust go, and Hell is Gehenna, which is fire.

We are born again, not by any human will, but begotten of God (Jn 1:13, 3:5; 1Jn 3:9; 1Pe 1:23).

And we are saved (past tense) now, by grace through faith (Eph 2:8-9), from God's wrath (Ro 5:9) at the final judgment.

Don't expect many will agree..it's why I suggest searching it out for yourself..saved V begotten, and the Hebrew word they are translated from.:)
The words spoken by the Son in these last days (Heb 1:1-2) through the NT writers states that we are both saved and begotten now.

We are saved by grace. Grace is wholly of God. Man has no part in Gods grace. Faith that leads us to trust in Gods grace comes from hearing and hearing the word of God. Faith is an evidence of the presence of Gods grace.

Some christians get offended when you are so confident about yourself being born again and being saved. Not sure why because if your not sure, what's the point? You will know through your intimate relationship with your heavenly Father and what He has said through His word.

Yes as change will be certain. ..

Ephesians 2:1-3
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

The Bible says that the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.

The problem today is that there is so much hypocrisy meaning that some people who confess Christ will not give up certain sins which the Spirit will not lead someone unless they are willing to give up sins and allow the Spirit to lead them,so they will not feel the Spirit working with them which could cause doubt.

Of course we can repent of our sins and give up sins and the Spirit will lead us and then we should feel like we are saved.
