Isaiah: 66:13 – As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.While I was reading and meditating on this passage, I was little surprised by this verse. We generally view God as our Father, and rightly so. So when we think about God, it might be a little hard for us to think of Him as a mother.
John 4:24 says that God is the Spirit and those who worship him, must worship in truth and spirit. Thus this is not a matter of – he or she. But God uses this visual of a mother, or father for us. In other verses of the Bible, God uses different human relationships and calls us His friend, brother, or children. This is so that we know him and understand Him. In this way we also relate to Him as our personal God and enjoy intimate relation with Him.
With this verse I am reminded of the role of our mother. She bears us in the womb for nine months, nurses us, teaches us to take our first step, rocks us to sleep, helps us to talk – She raises us. Today, who we are, or who we have become is, because of our mother. Our earthly mother might not be perfect, she may have limitations but she was still the one who brought us into this world.
Now consider God as our mother. From the day we were born again, or started a relationship with Him, he has spiritually nursed us and helped us to take our first steps. Then he slowly leads us to take solid food, which brings us to strength and maturity. Slowly we learn to walk with Him and be rooted in Him. And as the verse says – He comforts us. How deep and profound is the warmth and comfort that comes not from any human being but from God. It speaks to our inner most being and is life changing. God, just like a mother is singing a lullaby for us, rocking us and wiping our tears and giving us rest.

I couldn't think of God as a mother, he's always a father to me. A father doesn't have to be a harsh disciplinarian although I know God can be when needed. A father can have gentle ways too. God is the perfect father, gives discipline (a form of love) when needed and also nurturing and comfort when required. I guess He is all that we need.

Good thread - well thought out.

God is the father and a strict disciplinarian.
He punishes sinners and rewards the faithful.
Just look at the places hit by natural disasters:
Thailand: rampant homosexuality, child prostitution, drug use, buddhism
Haiti: prostitution, drugs, witchcraft, voodoo
Indian subcontinent: multiple gods, even an elephant god and an 8 armed hermaphrodite, plus Muslims who deny Christ's crucifixion.
Need I say more!?

But why can't we just stay awhile and think upon the verses this thread started with? He is many things to us - but few of us take the time to consider His "comforts" as He designed a mother to do.

Not all of us had that type of comforting from a mother, but it is nice to think that God fills that void left from a mother's neglect.

There is even a verse in Psalms that says that when our mothers or fathers forsake us, then the Lord will take us up. He has chosen to be Mother/Father to me in all my needs.

Can a woman forget her nursing child And have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.

God is a mother and father.

Only as an abba father, we do not have to fear him, for he has not given us a spirit of fear. but an abba father.

As a mother he nourishes and comforts us.

As a father he leads and directs us

He also disciplines us as well as in chastisement.......

El Shaddai in Hebrew, a name for God, means "breasted one."

While I am more familiar with the metaphor of God as a Father, there is no doubt that God is seen as a mother, too.

Psalm 131 is a Psalm that speaks of God, as a Mother, comforting a weaned child. A weaned child does not need the mother for food, and so comes to the mother for comfort and love.

131 O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things
too great and too marvelous for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child is my soul within me. Psalm 131:1-2

Well the word as applied in Hebrews carries the idea of disciplinary correction based upon training....just like we would train a child dia disciplinary correction....... :)

I am not going to touch that one with a ten foot pole for sake of the thread.

But my opinion is that God encomposses the entire gender spectrum. To assume that he is male or female i think would be a disserves to his glory to box him in one or the other. Just my thoughts.

God made man AND woman IN HIS IMAGE. Men and women, although different from each other both have attributes from God. There are MANY qualities you will see in a female that reflect Gods character. For example, God is a warrior, ever seen a woman when someone comes between her and her kids? Even the most gentle of creatures will rise to a warrior in those circumstances. The scriptures we find regarding the Lord comforting as a mother makes more sense when we understand a woman was made in HIS image. This is not to say God is feminine, but the very nature and essence of a woman comes from God.

Gods nature is just but He is also loving. SLOW to anger and abounding in love...and that love is UNconditional. That means there are NO CONDITIONS placed on a person for God to love them....he just loves them. You make it sound like he just sits there with a big stick and punishes anyone that steps out of line? That certainly isn't the God I know! He is Just, yes, He is Holy, but He is also VERY loving.

Amen.

We are all His children, we all carry good qualities.

God knew that Adam could not live without a life mate and created Eve............let us be reminded :p
