[27] But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
[28] bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. Luke 6:27-28 RSV

Did the Lord mean that EVERYBODY is supposed to love their enemies, or did he have a specific audience in mind?

I think he meant everyone

personally, I think it has at least three reasons:

1 We are to be as like Christ/ God as we can. Forgiveness and love are the greatest things they thought us
2 It helps the forgiver/ doer of good. If you truly forgive and do kind deeds to those who do bad stuff to you, it also makes you able to put things behind you
3 It "heaps burning coal on the enemy's head" :D

I also think that Jesus is talking to everyone. It is a revolutionary way of thinking. Repaying evil with love is a truly incomprehensible act. It goes against human nature and society norms, and will absolutely make your enemy second guess their motives for attacking you and perhaps even change their actions in the future. I also think that it shows how perfect God is and how separated we are from Him, and thusly, how much we need His sacrifice for our salvation.

A fourth reason might be that sometimes our enemies are in the right and we are in the wrong.

I think that He was speaking to the sons of God (christians) only, because to love an enemy you have to love the Lord first, and to do that you need faith on Him, without that, it is impossible.

This is a very powerful message that I learned long ago. When I was in Christian school, I had a friend that was like a sister to me. For some reason she started to get jealous of the attention I was getting from my other friends. She started to make up lies about me and got everyone in school to turn their backs on me. By Senior year, I was alone, frustrated, and friendless. I held my head up high reguardless and tried to find new friends. I was civil torwards her (believe me she wasn't to me) and I applied this verse to her. I specifically remember having a date to senior prom and she manipulated my date a week before prom into going with someone else (believe me, that one hurt but I forgave him as well.) She was just horrible.
But that same year, her dog died, she got in a car crash, some of her friends started to ignore her, and her boyfriend broke up with her.
Eventually the friends I had after graduating came up and apologized for all the bad things that she had done to me with them participating in it. I now learned that everyone from highschool has abandoned her, and she's crazier and lonely as ever. My hellish Senior year basically was "You're suffering, but I'm going to take care of you."

What He means is there are to be no enemies within the body of Christ, Sermon on the Mount is a sermon to the early believers and diciples, people who had come from different areas, clans, classes, some were scholars, some were merchants, some were military men, others tax collectors, some farmers, fishermen, some poor, some rich, the old and the young, men, women, children all from different walks of life, different lives, some had been enemies perhaps in the past, there were differences obviously and Jesus preached in His sermon, that if there were enemies amongst them, differences and divisions then they are overcome by love for each other in the body of Christ, under His Lordship, there can be no enemies within His body, those that were your enemies in Christ Jesus you are united as one.

There is nothing to indicate that it is only applied to enemies within the body of Christ and the practice found in the epistles would support that Christians were to treat both believer and unbeliever with love. In addition, Christ's example was to love us while we were still in rebellion.

"Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh IS OF GOD"

John says he who does not confess this is not of God and is the spirit of the antichrist, John says there are many antichrists in the world, they are of the world, but he says we Christians are of God, he says 'let us love one another for love is of God"

Just read all of 1 John 4, you will never hear an apostle say that the enemies of Christ and non-believers are to be loved, that is impossible, as John says it is impossible because our love is from God, God is love, not the human heart, Bible says the human heart is wicked, only God is love, and he/she who is of God, confesseth that Jesus Christ is Lord. And Christ says, he brings division and he says you must not love that which is of the world, you must hate it, 'hate the world (kosmos, lit. world order)', you must hate the order of the current world, the kingdom of God is not of this order it is patterned after the order of heaven.

God loved you first, and chose you Christians to be a joint heir in the promise of the kingdom of God (Eph. 1:4-8) That ye should be presented to Him holy and without blame before Him in love, the adoption of children by Jesus Christ, He makes you accepted in the Beloved, for His own good pleasure, by the glory of His own grace, according to His wisdom He makes this known to those He has chosen and predestinated from the foundation of the world, that you should be TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY! After ye heard the gospel of truth, your inheritences, in whom ye have trusted, sealed by the holy Spirit until redemption of the purchased possession unto the praise of His glory.

There is no love outside the body of Christ, not real love, the love of God is only within His body, and its the love of God which He extended to usward first.

Cup, never has it been more obvious that you serve an evil, twisted version of Christianity completely contrary to the teachings of Christ.

If I were in charge, you'd have been banned a long time ago.

We absolutely need to pray for our enemys and love them.
So many reasons why we should, but the most important one is that Jesus asked us to.
God bless, pickles

As far as audience goes; this is in the context of Christ offering the kingdom to the Jews

they rejected Him and the kingdom was postponed

we can only live up to those standards by leaning on Him

I think the audience of the Bible was meant to be everybody throughout all time.

I know that praying for and loving your enemies does glorify God Our Father.
I once had a coworker that was a horrible person . It seemed she looked for reasons to make you feel like dirt.
Because of this scripture I commited prayer for her everyday.
It took about a month, but by the end of the of it her whole attitude had changed.
We never spoke much but she was kinder and started complimenting and thanking all at work.
God is a mirical worker!
God bless, pickles

Love is only possible within Christ, because God was in Christ reconcilling the world back to Him, for 'God is love'.

If you say that love exists outside His body, you do not understand love, i.e. "Hereby percieve we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us (Christians); and we ought to lay down our live for the brethren adelphos, do you know what brethren means? The Greek means 'connective particle' from delphus which means womb, lit. relation from the womb - brethren.

In no way does John or any other Apostle speak of loving the enemies of Christ, antiChrists, love for antiChrists would be a sin against the holy Spirit.

Now where does love come from? John says the source of love is God, and you do not know love unless you know God, the love of God is manifest toward Christians, it is a gift to be shared amongst brethren;
"Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ IS BORN OF GOD" Let me repeat that "WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST IS BORN (gennao) OF GOD" That means literally concieved by God, born, begat, brought forth, procreate, bear, born, GOD brought ye forth, He delivered you, He begat you! A Christian is born of God, which make other Christians - 'brethren', related by birth to God!

Now Jesus says there can be NO division in the body of Christ, John says he that loveth God is born of God, he that does not have the Son, is not of God, he does not have the Father, and there is no love in him, neither truth, if there was he would recieve the gospel of salvation, for he knoweth and loveth God, and he hears God and follows, the sheep know the voice of the shepherd, and the Great Shepherd knows His sheep that belong to Him, and He finds them and loses none.

"Whosoever shall CONFESS THAT JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us (brethren), God is love, and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." 1. John 4:16

No love exists outside the body of the Son of God, love of God dwelleth in the heart of the believer, a non-believer hath not the love of God, love only exists between the connective parts of His body, God extends His love to those that are born of Him.

Jesus said to love your enemies. He did not say, love your enemies inside the fellowship of Christ. There was no addition. Your additions mean nothing. There is no arguing that love is vital within the body of Christ, but to argue against loving the sinner is to split families and to destroy all evangelism. You have said many odd things, but this one worries me the most.
