Hey everyone.

When you post in this thread, can you please respectfully keep in mind this?

1. Jesus is Christ, our Lord and so, no matter if you differ from someone, please don't let it become inflammatory. Please avoid attacking anyone.

2. You may be a cessationist or a continuationist, this thread isn't to debate which is right. [If someone posts a link from gotquestions.org or some other site about all this, I am going to report them. Strictly personal views only]

So, I just want to know, if you are a cessationist, what do you think when you encounter someone who speaks in tongues or utters a prophecy?

I do know the arguments about tongues - being a language that can be understood by others, the canon of scripture being closed etc.

However in case you do believe all this, I am curious what would be the conclusion on seeing someone who displays such outward/sign gifts and believes Jesus is God and for the case of a hypothetical scenario, doesn't differ with you doctrinally on anything.

In case, you have never encountered something like this [people talking in "heavenly languages" and healings happening] then please refrain from posting in this thread too. I am willing to risk another unpopular thread :)

I understand it is a purely personal view, but I just want to understand some of your thought processes.

If you are a continuationist, you can chime in your views too.

Thanks a lot in advance and God bless you all.

When one evangelizes TODAY ...
with super-great gospel tracts having 50 small pages each
(each page has a title followed by applicable Scripture quotations),
and this evangelization is done with signs and wonders following,
does it make any sense that these signs, wonders, and miracles
were performed by Satan's demons?

"... in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God,
so that ... I have fully preached the gospel of Christ." (Romans 15:19)

Might as well close the thread and get on with somethin' worthwhile!

Well I dont know that you can report some one for linking to another page. But in another thread I gave my personal story about this...

My parents have a friend who is Lebanese I believe that is right.Anyhow he came to Canada not knowing hardly any English. He wasnt a Christian. Then one Sunday he was walking down the street and passed a church.Suddenly he stopped. In his own language someone was telling him how to get saved!! He listened and then went into the church. He found the pastor and managed to ask if he could speak to the Lebanese lady who told him how to get saved. There was no one of that nationality there, the lady was speaking in tongues. That man got saved, became a pastor of a church that now has about a thousand people attending.I heard his story often and then one year our family gospel group were invited to sing at his church.I met the man in person and boy can he preach! So the answer is yes,the gifts are for today.

I have spoken in tongues before,I know it to be real. Now lots of discussion will follow to tell me how wrong I am.But I have heard and experienced this many times before. If speaking in tongues has ceased then I guess that would make me demon possessed. :(

Starting your own thread doesn't give you the ability to alter site policies.

Every thread on this forum falls under the same site rules and policies.
You can't report someone for linking out to a perfectly orthodox website.
Well, you can report anyone you like... but it's going to be ignored.

When you create a new thread, it's best to "ask" people to behave in certain ways,
not "demand" they behave in certain ways.

When you create a thread, you have no more authority over that thread than anyone else.

This is a public forum, when you create a thread people can come into that thread and say, or do, whatever they like, as long as it doesn't violate site polices. So if you want people to respond in a certain way, it's best to ask nicely, not make demands.

Everyone have fun discussing cessationism and continuationism.
It's a good topis.

As the originator of this thread, and a person with a question I do believe I have a very valid right to ask people to refrain from a certain manner of discussion because I believe it is not conclusive or helpful.

This is not altering site policies.

According to this site, I can and do have the right to report to the moderators my dissent on any particular post. It is of course up to them, how they deal with it.

However since I hold that franchise, I shall exercise it. It's not meant to attack anyone but just because it disrespects the nature of the question that I am asking.

I am not asking someone whether cessationsim/continuation is right or wrong. I am just asking someone's personal views.

I believe I did ask this nicely.

You have every right to create your own thread about cessationism vs continuation and have fun with it.

This is just the way I want to start out a discussion.

Please respect it.

I always think 1 John 4, is a good test to discern spirits and I just want to thank you again for talking about this so openly.

Excuse me but this is not hearsay,I know this man personally.I'd appreciate you refrain from calling us both liars, thanks. His faith is real and he has grown a wonderful church with his testimony. So I'd thank you to keep your rudeness to yourself.

Rachel20,

You start your discussion by threatening to report anyone who doesn't behave exactly as you wish.

And the particular thing you threaten to report them for, is a thing which IS allowed on this site.

You can certainly open your thread with threats.
But just possibly... just possibly... threatening people isn't the best way to start a conversation.

Maxwel.

I am not going to change my stance and my view that I do not want people to post links from other sites, even if they are very respected.

Yes I mentioned reporting that, and it's because I wanted it to be strictly aligned to that. I am not going to apologize for that as well.

The reason in doing so, was not to create an inflammatory thread.

However neither have you contributed to this thread but are only nitpicking and just derailing this thread. If you don't like this manner of putting things across, please don't bother.

This was my way of starting a discussion and you're wasting my time.

Yes I was put off by that too but in her second post I understand what shes getting at.People argue 50 pages about right or wrong.Shes asking for something more personal.Experience.Not just an everlasting right/wrong argument.I think she has the right to be specific about where her post goes so it's not derailed.

Thanks a lot in advance and God bless you all.
My personal opinions:
About tongues: They either a) Know that they are liars or b) are incredibly deceived, most likely brought up as a kid being taught this "gift". As you stated, Acts is clear about what tongues were on the day of Pentecost, and it is a world of difference from what we see today.

About Prophecy: It's such vanity to get a personal prophecy about a new job or a new promotion or anything carnal along these lines. Demons or familiar spirits are just as good at setting up minor events like this as anything else, and trusting them is along the lines of divination or fortune telling. Those who make grand claims of prophecy, i.e. a global event, are always proven false. Always. I, again, believe these propagating this to be a) liars or b) incredibly deceived.

About "healing": Compare modern healing to a biblical healing. It is not even close. It's so asinine to even compare the so-called healing we see today to anything that is reported in the bible. It's again another vanity. I believe a) the people propagating these "healings" are a) liars or b) incredibly deceived.

I have been to one church for a good bit of time that did these things. It was an assembly of God, and the Gospel was rarely preached, and when it was, it was watered down and more focused on sign gifts than anything else. The bible was hardly used at all during service. Just random clippings of it here and there to kinda go along with whatever nonsense was being preached on.

Just my opinion.

The OP certainly has a right to ASK people to post in a certain way.

However, this is a public forum, and people also have the right to come into her thread and post however they please.
That's just how a public forum works.

The OP doesn't get some special privilege, that allows her to threaten people, and report people, for things which are NOT in violation of policy.

Opening a thread with THREATS is a very strange thing to do.
It is NOT the best way to engender a polite discourse.

What a glorious testimony.
I was very priveliged to get saved during the charismatic revival.

The baptism in the HS was awesome and I will never, ever forget it.
Thank you Jesus for your work you started in the upper room with the outpouring of opower that you gave us.
And thak you for being the same Jesus and proving you are alive and well with signs following...just as you did thousands of years ago.
