Genesis 3

1Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
9And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
16Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
20And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. 24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

What was Eve's sin? Was it a literal tree? Did the punishment fit the transgression?

Dear Israel,

First of all I love your avatar/picture.............It looks like a wonderful version of The Lion of The Tribe of Judah. The real issue here is INDEPENDENCE.......We are designed to depend on GOD. Search out in the Gospels the statements that JESUS says all through the Gospels..........for example: ...without Me you can do nothing.............The works I do are not my own I only do what I see My FATHER doing..........My words are not my own they are from the FATHER............I came to do My FATHERS Will..............GOD absolutel eats it up when we learn the real truth about HIS Will for us, which is learning to be TOTALLY DEPENDENT ON HIM.............JESUS CHRIST was the only person that TOTALLY depended on GOD the FATHER, even in raising Him from the dead, after the cross of Calvary.

The Word of GOD is filled with this truth from beginning to end. Adam and Eve had everything they could possibly need ALREADY SUPPLIED AND CREATED BY GOD BEFORE HE MADE THEM................And what did they do, the ONE thing they were told not to do. This brought DEATH....(Spiritual) Remember, GOD Breathed into Adams nostrils, AND THEN HE BECAME A LIVING BEING..............When they ate the fruit, THEY DIED...........GOD said they would. The first evidence of their spiritual death, (seperation from GOD) was they were AFRAID AND ASHAMED THEY WERE NAKED........

This is why we must be BORN AGAIN.............All through the Old Testament, no one was ever FILLED with the Spirit of GOD, they only had an anointing "COME UPON THEM"..............Only after JESUS died and rose again and ascended to the right hand of The FATHER, did GOD pour out HIS SPIRIT TO FILL SOMEONE...........AGAIN AS IT WAS IN THE GARDEN.........Why? Because a Man, (JESUS) paid the price for all men since Adam. This price had to be paid because GOD basically GAVE the Earth to man..............be fruitful and multiply, AND SUBDUE the Earth............But as you know, Adam and Eve handed THE TITLE DEED over to Satan. JESUS Won this back for us however, and then handed it back to us.............

WOW HUH! Well anyway, I went through basically a whole teaching on this subject. I hope it helps you to understand.............there's a lot more that JESUS did to reverse some of the FATHER'S decrees back there in Genesis, but that's another story.

Be blessed............

well.. you can argue the original sin came through Adam.. because he did not take leadership to stop Eve eating the apple.. knowing that God prohibited eating it. I think when you look at Genesis.. Adam is not mentioned as being away from Eve.. but near when she is eating the apple.

(Gen 3:7) And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

(Gen 3:8) And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

The verses following the eating of the fruit by Eve show they were together.. and so it suggests that Adam was with Eve nearby when she took the fruit.. and did nothing to stop her.

I agree. this is supported by the fact that Eve did not have a name prior to the fall, she was just "out-of-man". Adam is the most common Hebrew word for man, so you had man and out-of-man. I think that they had a unity of purpose and action. There also seems to be no time passed between woman taking the fruit and man.

2 timothy 2:14
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

Adam was not deceived. He knew very well what he had done and of the consequences of his actions; so why did he do it anyway? What did Eve do in the garden that so went against God's commandment?

She disobeyed Gods commandment, so the answer is disobedience..going against Gods Word.
The key issue here is disobedience.

The original sin was pride when Satan thought he was better than God.

Huh??..it had nothing to do with Satan's fall but everything to Adam and Eve's disobedience.

What was it in the garden? I know Eve was disobedient, but what did she do? I don't see it in the Bible as simply a piece of fruit. The Bible points to fornication with whatever this 'serpent' was.

WE are stating the very first sin ever since the question was ORIGINAL sin the specifics were not referenced towards man or angelic beings.

But the OP is talking about Adam and Eve's original sin.

Eve's original sin was listening to satan and disobedience towards God.

Adam's original sin was not exercising his authority as husband over the wife and allowing her to dictate to him what he should do.

When you dig deep into this topic, Eve fell victom to the same sin that got Satan kicked out of heaven. Satan tempted her with the idea of being like God. Yes her initial sin was disobedience but it was fueled by her desire to be exalted. So in my opinion original sin is selfishness / self exaltation.
