LUKE 5:35
But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast."

Can we call our waiting period to be a time God allotted to us to fast since our Bridegroom is taken away and we await His return?

Would like to know your thoughts on these?

Fasting means that the true word of God is no longer being taught mainstream and to the world. They go hungry for it.

The context of the parable and the wine skins is in direct response to the question in verse 19 - “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” The parable of the new wine in old wine skins is related to incompatibility, they simply do not go together. Jesus used this comparison of incompatibility to illustrate the point that it is improper for the disciples to be fasting while the bridegroom is present. This is the proper time for feasting. When the bridegroom is taken away, then would be the proper time for fasting. He was talking about the time when he would be taken away from his disciples by death.

Fasting means you don't eat or drink anything. It has been used to humble people from way into the past and will be into the future.

That's not really a doctrinal treatise but you can be assured there's plenty of benefit to fasting

Matthew 5:6
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Matthew 6:9-10
9
"Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10'Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

In order for the righteous will of God to be done on Earth we may need to fast?

"And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst."(John 6:35)
His will is than we may come to Him and be filled. And our task is to do our best for this. Fasting means concentrating on something. John's disciples and Pharisees were concentrating on (old wine) Law, while Jesus' disciples were concentrating on (new wine) Jesus' words.

Heres a few I was looking at sometime ago which I never returned to, when I was trying to compare what was there in Isaiah to elsewhere, if anyone has anything more by way of that particular picture Im all for it.

They say here,

Isaiah 58:3 Wherefore have we fasted, [say they], and thou seest not? [wherefore] have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

He says,

Mat 6:16-17 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

Isaiah 58:5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him?

wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

Then here of the fast He has chosen...

Isaiah 58:6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

Which was what Jesus is shown doing

Luke 13:16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

To loose the bands of wickedness,

Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

Thus, to let the oppressed go free

Burdens breaking yokes can be shown

Isaiah 58:6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

The undoing and bearing one another burdens,

Gal 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

And breaking every yoke, could be inclusive of this one

Acts 15:10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

And we lay upon you no greater burden...

Acst 15:28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things;

Sorta like even the apostles were breaking off yokes and burdens in that way, where Jesus speaks of the other binding up burdens on others.

Luke 11: 35
Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.

Luke 11:36
And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

I never completed this, I had just begun looking at the wording before ones light came forth in such things he spake of.

I have never "tried" not eating for days at a time or anything myself (well, except for school dances to fit into a dress) LOL. But I typically eat once a day (dinner) but its not like I need to make myself just get wrapped up the the word and forget normal things, and that is all the time. However, I still find that beneficial (in myself) in that my senses seem sharper not being full of food so much.

Doesnt do a blessed thing for my waistline though (in case your wondering)

I wonder if you can fast sleep? Cause I do that alot, but even that isnt planned or anything. And I bring that up because I find I just get caught up in things and just forget this other stuff.

But in those things its not like some intentional holiness grab or any such thing, and I dont really feel that has anything to do with it anyway.

There are different types of fasting. My favorite is the kind Moses and Jesus did...in those cases fasting was simply a bi-product of spending time alone with God continuously.

If you look at the root word for most of the fasts (the words), the lexicon shows the idea for the mouth being shut the defintion of the word

  1. (Qal) to abstain from food, fast

Which is more clearly seen here

Isaiah 58:4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

There is that kind of fast for they were doing.

I would think that could imply their mouth wasnt shut in that doing either

This may be just me talking but I feel that the purpose of fasting is to get in a position of denying self through whatever means to focus more on God and draw nigh unto him. And when we do it moreso in secret the benefits are more pronounced.

In Mat 4:2 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

Mat 4:2 And when he (Jesus) had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

It was after the same that the tempter (the devil) came to tempt him

He resisted the devil (get thee hence) and the devil fled, the angels ministered to him (even as they are sent to minister to the heirs of eternal slavtion) and in another place it shows Jesus returned in the very power of the Spirit after that.

He come out powerful through it it seems

Fasting is a good form for spiritual growth, as it helps to teach oneself on how to be content with what they have.
Learning to abstain from things that can corrupt your spiritual growth, and to put your focus clearly on the Lord.

I fasted for a whole week one time, and did nothing but read the bible.

MATT.6:18.

That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret:
and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

for those who have experienced this scripture, you know the many rewards
that follow such dedication and heartfelt beseeching.

denying 'self' is truly one of the greatest challenges when done in love and integrity.
our Father seems to appreciate such acts of secret love for Him alone.
He has created many ways for us to draw close and worship -
new doors just keep opening after closing another.

No fasting does not mean concentrating on something, it means refusing food or water for a period of time. The typical fast is for 24 hours.
