I had Jury duty today and it was the most boring day of my life. I was not picked for the jury. But had to sit there in a room from 8:30 am till 4:00 PM we did have a lunch break thank God. But while I was there I stuck up some conversation with the people around me. Asking where they went to church and saying where I went and we got to discussing doctrines of all things to do in a jury holding room. We had a good time not arguing or fussing, we all agreed on the cross and that Jesus paid the price and that he is the Author and Finisher of our faith.

Any way some were Methodist and some were of the 1,000 different Baptist, some Presbyterian and some lutheran and Pentecostal. But One lady spoke up and said she was Baptist and that she had been baptized twice. Another gentlemen who has Baptist as well asked her why?

She said well I was baptized in a lake and a few years later we got a new Pastor and he told me that didn't count. He said I had to baptized in running water. So we went down to the Chattahoochee river ( the cesspool of Atlanta) and he baptized me there so I have been baptized twice. Of course I laughed and could not believe what I just heard.

My question is which one is right?

If she went under the water the first one, and the new pastor must be ignorant........! NO where does it imply that the water has to be running....!

I forgot to mention. I am pentecostal for those who do not know and we have a baptismal pool behind the pulpit. We run fresh water in there when we have a baptismal service. would that be considered running water?

"one Lord, one faith, one baptism," Eph. 4:5

The pastor who rebaptized is wrong. The word baptism in Greek is τὸ βάπτισμα in the noun form. It has the implication of "dipping." Nothing about needing running water. That might come from the Jews, who had a daily ritual Mikvah, or bath for cleansing purposes. That meant running water. But nowhere in the New Testament does it say anyone was baptized in running water, although in some cases, like the River Jordan, it was running water.

People should hold fast to their faith, read the Bible, and not follow after false teachers!

Paul says the following about baptism:

"We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life" Romans 6:4

It is the meaning of the act that is important, not whether it is running water. I was baptized in a tank, which is typical in Canada, especially in winter. By this second pastor's idea, I don't think many Canadians would be baptized!

She may have been Primitive Baptist.
I dealt with this when I lived East Tenn.
Their beliefs and practices are very different from most others who wear the name Baptist.

But this is what she said that the pastor told her. John baptized in the Jordan river and Jesus was baptized in the Jordan river which is running water and that were certain things in the OT that if you were unclean you had to wash in running water in order to be clean. I do remember something about if you have touched the dead that you must wash in running water. Let me look it up.

The Didache recommends running water as a first option and still water as a second option, but allows for both.

I've heard of some Baptists wanting people to be baptized in their own church, but maybe the folks were infant baptized.

Leviticus 14
32
This is the law of him in whom is the plague of leprosy, whose hand is not able to get that which pertaineth to his cleansing.

33 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
34 When ye be come into the land of Canaan, which I give to you for a possession, and I put the plague of leprosy in a house of the land of your possession;
35 And he that owneth the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, It seemeth to me there is as it were a plague in the house:
36 Then the priest shall command that they empty the house, before the priest go into it to see the plague, that all that is in the house be not made unclean: and afterward the priest shall go in to see the house:
37 And he shall look on the plague, and, behold, if the plague be in the walls of the house with hollow strakes, greenish or reddish, which in sight are lower than the wall;
38 Then the priest shall go out of the house to the door of the house, and shut up the house seven days:
39 And the priest shall come again the seventh day, and shall look: and, behold, if the plague be spread in the walls of the house;
40 Then the priest shall command that they take away the stones in which the plague is, and they shall cast them into an unclean place without the city:
41 And he shall cause the house to be scraped within round about, and they shall pour out the dust that they scrape off without the city into an unclean place:
42 And they shall take other stones, and put them in the place of those stones; and he shall take other morter, and shall plaister the house.
43 And if the plague come again, and break out in the house, after that he hath taken away the stones, and after he hath scraped the house, and after it is plaistered;
44 Then the priest shall come and look, and, behold, if the plague be spread in the house, it is a fretting leprosy in the house; it is unclean.
45 And he shall break down the house, the stones of it, and the timber thereof, and all the morter of the house; and he shall carry them forth out of the city into an unclean place.
46 Moreover he that goeth into the house all the while that it is shut up shall be unclean until the even.
47 And he that lieth in the house shall wash his clothes; and he that eateth in the house shall wash his clothes.
48 And if the priest shall come in, and look upon it, and, behold, the plague hath not spread in the house, after the house was plaistered: then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the plague is healed.
49 And he shall take to cleanse the house two birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop:
50 And he shall kill the one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water:
51 And he shall take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times:
52 And he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet:
53 But he shall let go the living bird out of the city into the open fields, and make an atonement for the house: and it shall be clean.

Chap 15

3 And when he that hath an issue is cleansed of his issue; then he shall number to himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in running water, and shall be clean.

54 This is the law for all manner of plague of leprosy, and scall,
55 And for the leprosy of a garment, and of a house,
56 And for a rising, and for a scab, and for a bright spot:
57 To teach when it is unclean, and when it is clean: this is the law of leprosy.

I think that if you're a Jew living in the Old Testament,
and you're doing a ritual cleansing for leprosy...

then the whole "running water" thing is very biblical.

Oh, I did want to say thank God I was not picked for this jury. The case was about a 40 year old man who raped and killed a 9 year old girl. I kinda would have liked to have been on that jury, but I know it will be dragged out for weeks. Because they are seeking the death penalty. He was actually in the search party looking for her body for 4 days before he cracked and told the truth and he was the boyfriend of the mother of her best friend.

Anyways I Was just wondering what the majority of Baptist thought about the twice baptism this little old lady talked about and thank you for your comments. I just wish we here could discuss our differences with out getting hot headed as we did today at jury duty. I think the face to face thing had a lot to do with it. Cause I'm kinda guilty of being haughty myself at times. But y'all didn't know that did ya?

The Baptism to Seek:

THE LIVING WATER

Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.6 .) Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.7 .) There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.8 .) (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)9 .) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 .) Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 .) The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12 .) Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 .) Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 .) But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Hebrews 10:19) Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 .) By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 .) And having an high priest over the house of God; 22 .) Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 .) Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised)

John 19:34) But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

Sounds like either the pastor was ignorant of scripture or he was insecure and wanted to have another baptism punched on his card. Egotistical.

The way to get out of it would have been to walk into the selection room shouting "guilty!!!"

I totally agree I was just asking baptist what they thought as this is a cardinal doctrine for them. It makes no difference to me. My faith is in the blood of Jesus and what, where, and when I was held under water whether running, walking, or stagnant by a preacher to me is insignificant, it was an outward show of an inner change. No offense Baptist as I have been baptized in water and the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

I was baptised through being dunked in water when I was little, and again in an older age. Then God told me to drink only water and read the Bible in solitude for a number of days. The solitude with only The Word of God and creek water going in was the baptism I found most edifying.

Well you must do what God tells you even if it don't make sense. I know a lady who had cancer and she prayed and prayed for God to heal her. She said, not me, but she said that God told her to eat onion sandwhiches for two weeks and drink nothing but water. She obeyed and the cancer was gone. Many may find that strange. but there was a dude that came to Elijah and elijah told him to dip himself in the Jordan river 7 times and the dude, I think his was Naaman, said we have cleaner waters in Syria. But in the in the end he obeyed and was cleansed.

God talk is crazy talk to the flesh. He will tell you to start a business when you just bounced a check.

No deadly water can hurt us...

Mark 16:17-19King James Version (KJV)

17*And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18*They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
19*So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

Luke 10:18-20King James Version (KJV)

18*And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
19*Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20*Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.

Well if you drink bad water it will kill you or make you badly sick. However I especially like this quote of yours

I drank out of a creek for 40 days and did not get sick...and it did have a strong flavor. A valley creek actually. Perhsps if a person is testing God that may be true.
