What I am interested in is the full meaning from the original text of the word "believeth" as it is used in John 3:16.

I am asking because, recently I heard a Sermon where the Preacher said that in the original language, the "tense" this was used in means more than just simply believing something. Rather it means to come to believe, and continue in that belief. To never stop believing.

If this is true, then I look at John 3:16, and I see it saying........"whosoever believeth in, and continues in that belief......"

In a way, this would also explain another statement Jesus made........

Matthew 24:13 .) But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

If correct, then I can see why Jesus would say "he that shall endure unto the end..........." meaning he who continued in his belief, and never stopped believing in Jesus...........

SIDEBAR: This is not intended to support or argue against ANY Theological position. I'm simply asking for a clarification of the proper "tense" use of the word "believeth" in John 3:16

Thanks (ahead of time) for any effort you may put into answering this. I will check back later this evening to read your comment(s).

God bless

All I know is an aorist tense verb is used and directed at the (is having everlasting life)

it shows a continual, present result based upon a past completed action...

I had eternal life the day I believed
I have eternal life now
I continual to have eternal life into the future

The use of this verb would contradict what the preacher said that you heard.......

I will also add that it is the perfect faith of Jesus that saves and justifies us before God...Galatians 2:16-21

Christ cannot deny himself and if one has truly believed it is that perfect faith of Christ that saves, justifies and seals the believer into Christ!

First thing I would look at is this (to understand that some Hebrew words carried more "meaning" then other languages:

Deuteronomy 18:18-19, "I (YHWH) will raise up for them a Prophet (Yahshua/Jesus) like you from among their brothers, and I will put My words in His mouth, and He will tell them everything I command Him. Whoever will not listen to My words, which He speaks in My Name, I will judge him for it"

"listen" is word #8085 שָׁמַע shama` {shaw-mah'}

Brown-Driver-Briggs (Old Testament Hebrew-English Lexicon)
A primitive root; to hear intelligently (often with implication of attention, obedience, etc.; causatively to tell, etc.)

Hebrew Word Study (Transliteration-Pronunciation Etymology & Grammar) - 1) to hear, listen to, obey

SO the word "listen" means to hear AND obey.

and the Messiah directly reflects this thought here:

John 5:24, "Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life."

John 12:48, "He who rejects Me, and does not follow My words has One Who judges him. The word that I have spoken, the same will be used to judge him in the last day."

They put no difference between believing and doing... 1 word same meaning.

The writer of Hebrews also has this thought:

Heb 3:16-19, "For some, when they had heard, rebelled. But not all rebelled who came out of Egypt through Mosheh. But with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He vow that they would not enter into His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief."

What I am interested in is the full meaning from the original text of the word "believeth" as it is used in John 3:16.
It is, quite simply, saving faith. It is beyond intellectual assent to the Gospel, beyond emotional experience of the power of Christ. It is absolute, unquestioning, unshakable faith that Jesus is exactly who He says He is, and that by His shed blood our sins are washed away, and by His resurrection, He defeats death on our behalf that we may live forever in Him. Such faith cannot be lost, it cannot wane, it cannot disappear. The Holy Spirit resides in one who has such faith, and He cannot be pried loose, evicted, denied, or "lost" by someone whose conviction of the truth He has revealed to us is the only truth there is.

Now as to this ...

In a way, this would also explain another statement Jesus made........

Matthew 24:13 .) But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Jesus did not say this as a warning to us that we can lose what He and He alone has given us -- it has nothing to do with us beyond that unshakable faith, which comes from the Holy Spirit, not us, anyway. He said this as way of recognizing those who are not of the faith. The one who falls away, had no saving faith to begin with. He/she remained lost even though claiming to be "found." Such a person has been exposed to the Gospel, has had some level of acceptance of it and agreement to it, but have not been touched in the spirit to effect life-change. Hebrews 6:1-8 speaks exactly of this person.

They've been "enlightened" regarding the Gospel, they have "tasted" the truth, they have experienced the drawing and calling power of the Holy Spirit, but they have not let Him in! For whatever selfish, worldly reasons unfathomable to those who believe, they hear, see, even touch what Christ has to offer, and say "No, thanks" in their spirit, even if they think they have said, "Amen!" in their mind, have joyously reveled in the Holy Spirit's power when He called them to repent and believe.

If they had ever had saving faith, Hebrews 6:6 says such a turning away, or "falling away" as the verse says, would prevent them from ever being renewed to repentance. One who "loses their salvation" can never be restored. But a person of true faith cannot lose their salvation! It is impossible. They look to us as though they have, to be sure, but we did not know their heart.

Only Christ can know that, and He gives us Matthew 24:13 to be able to recognize the true believer from the false convert. Such a person can be called to repentance, and when we see someone who has apparently "lost their salvation," we must go evangelize them, because they never had it, but they desperately need it.

πιστεύω= Formally in the N.T. and in classical Greek the word mean and denotes reliance, trust, and belief and or to believe...the verb is often used for believing God's word....some uses also sets forth the following principles...

To believe is to obey
To believe is to trust into
To believe is to hope and or have hope

The verb follows much of the same pattern of the noun...and carries the idea...to receive the message and my denote to be believing and or to believe and or hope.......

Combined with aorist tense verb of (is having everlasting life) to me sets to rest what has been said.......

If correct, then I can see why Jesus would say "he that shall endure unto the end..........." meaning he who continued in his belief, and never stopped believing in Jesus...........

This, belief and faith is a life long thing, not I woke up one morning and believed and im fully sealed now, done I can do anything now, and then I changed my mind but Im still saved.

I think we have been very trained to think of faith and belief in a modern sense and miss the majority of the beauty within.

Lets let the Scriptures show us, because they explain better then any man!

Hebrews 3:14 ESV
"For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end."

Revelation 2:10 ESV
"Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life."

Romans 13:11-14 ESV
Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Matthew 10:22 ESV
"And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved."

1 Corinthians 10:13 ESV
"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

Revelation 2:17 ESV
"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers (overcomes) I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it."

Revelation 2:7 ESV
"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers (overcomes) I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."

James 1:12 ESV
"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."

Hebrews 6:4-6 ESV
"For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt."

NASB Romans 13:11-14, "Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed. The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts."

James 5:8, "You too be patient; strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near."

Look at the world around us... is this not a test?

Psalm 11:4. " YHWH is in His holy temple; YHWH'S throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men."

Of course it is, to see He is fit to enter the kingdom and who is not....

Luke 21:28
"Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Much of the world has been given a half message, "a gospel of John, a repeat after me prayer, and their "ticket to heaven stamped"

Accepting Him and His Sacrifice is only the beginning of the journey.... we are His sheep He is our Shepherd, sheep follow their Shepherd...

"listen" is word #8085 שָׁמַע shama` {shaw-mah'}

Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He vow that they would not enter into His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief."
So according to the Messiah;s words can we believe and not follow and still have eternal life?

John 5:24, "Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life."

John 12:48, "He who rejects Me, and does not follow My words has One Who judges him. The word that I have spoken, the same will be used to judge him in the last day."

IMO no because a continued belief and faith will lead to a change....

Acts 26:20 English Standard Version
"but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God (YHWH), performing deeds in keeping with their repentance."

Acts 3:19 Parallel Verses
"Repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out; that times ofrefreshing may come from the presence of Yahweh."

New International Version
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

belief anf faith is not some empty mind thought... where I believe and look in the mirror and then walk out my door and do, think and acts the opposite....

You got to look at the whole verse, not just one word.

While I agree that the word belief is not just some word (many believe yet do not have faith) the tense only matters in the sense in what follows. Eternal life.

The word eternal life is in the aorist, it means something which has occurred at some point in the past (in this case the moment one believed) and is still active today, and will continue on. that is th emor eimportant word to get this interpretation right.

Np man, no anger and I keep no grudge, I love you brother, because I know we do disagree on some things, but we are both seeking Him in this crazy world! So may we stand side by side and use each other as supports and the Messiah as the Chief Cornerstone! This is a very delicate matter in my heart so I could have worded my "reply" to you differently, but I do think it VITAL to understanding those principles to look at shamah and the way it carried over into Messiah's teaching, not as a final understanding but as a solid foundation.

Thats the point which separates so many people.

Yes, Some can BELIEVE in Christ, and not obey (do anything) but as James says, did their "faith" save them? no. why? because it was dead (had no life, was non existent.

It takes literal faith in God to be saved and return eternal life Those who have true faith WILL obey, there is no "if question" about it.

The only question is, for those who claim to believe in God.

Is their faith real (meaning they are saved, and born of God,

Or is it dead (meaning they are still dead to God)

What you say is true, and I will honesty and gladly say, for me this is where a strong measure of "reverence (righteous respectful fear) comes in, because He knows my heart better then I do, so all I can do is ask for Him to strengthen and guide me. The best prayer I ever made for myself IMO is "let your will be done in my life YHWH."

That be shown in all of us in the day of judgement, for all of us;

2 Corinthians 5:10, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Messiah, that each one may receive his reward according to what he has done in the body, whether righteous or evil.”

1 Corinthians 4:4-5, "For I know nothing by myself; yet by this I am not justified, for He Who judges me is Yahweh! Therefore, judge nothing before the time. Wait until Yahshua comes, Who will bring to light the things hidden in darkness, and will reveal the secret intentions of men's hearts; and then each man will receive praise from Yahweh."

I have to post these: (we need HIM)

Isayah 45:18, "For this is what Yahweh, Who created the heavens, Who is the Strength, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it in vain, Who formed it to be inhabited, says: I am Yahweh, and there is no other source of power!"

John (Yahchanan 15:4-6, "Abide in Me, and I in you. Just as the branch cannot produce fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, produces much fruit; but without Me, you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away like a branch, and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned."

Yahchanan (John) 17:21-24, "That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me, I have given them; that they may be in unity, just as We are in unity. I in them, and You in Me--so that they may be made perfect in unity; and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them, as You have loved Me. Father, it is My will that they, whom You gave Me, also be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world."

Psalm 37:39, "The salvation of the righteous is from Yahweh! He is our strength in the time of trouble!"

Psalm 40:16, "May all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You! May those who love Your Salvation always say: May Yahweh be magnified!"

Phillipians 3:20, "But our citizenship is in heaven, out from which we also eagerly wait for our Ruler, Yahshua Messiah the King."

I personally see that we are born into this world (most of us with exceptions like John the baptist) according to the flesh, and ignorant of even the existence of a spirit life and perspective. Still...when a baby is born it naturally trusts for care and comfort... when the baby cries it is not doing so for no reason, but naturally does so until the baby is content, comforted, not hungry, or really sleepy from prolonged crying or something.

We who are born again also are babies (83.3333333 years old is an hour from a given scriptural perspective), we know and understand little at first and begin to grow by gifts given from our Father, through His only begotten, and by The Holy Spirit. To whom much is given shall much be required, and that is part of equality. We are adopted though, and most still have fleshly habits that God is helping us to overcome.

If we truly trust/believe with the faith of a child, it will look and sound and feel as complete dependancy. Not resisting but longing for steadily good and perfect motivation is good.

true.

but remember, that is the bema seat judgment. That is a judgement for rewards only. different from the great white throne judgment.

Only children of God will be in that judgment, non believers will not partake of that judgment.

This will be the only place I out MY WORDS;

"Some pass out of/through Judgement with a "white stone" some are judged and burnt up..." , for we are justified by the blood of Messiah aka Yahweh's mercy to mankind, the undeserved pardon. Our works are filthy. Im not going to sit here and say I completely understand how judgement works, because I do not, but I trust what is written is true. The rest is Scripture, please don't accuse me;

For Scripture says;

2 Corinthians 5:10, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Messiah, that each one may receive his reward according to what he has done in the body, whether righteous or evil.”

Revelation 20:12-13, “And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before Yahweh. And the books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and Death and Sheol delivered up the dead which were in them. And they were judged, every man, according to their works.”
