Always pray first.

Get a partner and each write down 3 verses and trade the pieces of paper and call out a verses and have them reply.

Flash cards for personal use.

Get a small pocket size notebook and write down your favorite verses and carry it around.

and the best way IMO, reading slowly after clearing your mind and praying truthfully:

Isayah 59:21, "As for Me, this is My covenant with them, says Yahweh: My Spirit which is upon you, namely My Word (Instructions) which I have put in your mouth; they will not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your seed, nor from the mouth of your seed's seed, says Yahweh: from this time and forevermore."

John 6:63, "It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The Words (Instructions) that I speak to you, they are Spirit, and they are life everlasting."

Good advice from Hizikyah!

First do not be overwhelmed. I think memorizing Scripture is the best possible thing we can do for our souls!

Second, do not panic. Memorization is a learned skill, not taught in school much these days. So this is a great opportunity for you. If you hide God's Word in your heart it will always be there for you.

I agree with the flash cards, with a few verses on it. Start by reading the verse prayerfully, and thinking about the most important things in the verse. Then look at what the verbs are and the nouns. Be aware of the opening and closing words.

Then you need to sit down and just memorize by rote. That could mean repeating the verses over and over, or repeating each word over and over. Then work on phrases. I memorized Romans 5, and there were so many "More that that" and "Therefore since" and "much more" phrases it became some good starting points to tie the sentences together.

Finally really try and understand the meaning of what the chapter is saying. Is it about the cross, or how to follow Jesus? It it a chapter of praise, or a narrative? What is God saying to his people and to you!, All these things can help you, but in the end, you just have to memorize word after word.

Flash cards taken everywhere are your best friend, for sure! When I learned Greek and Hebrew, I had my purse and pockets crammed with flash cards, and every time I had to sit down, I was working on them. Some people asked questions about what I was doing, but most didn't even notice.

Hi, kaityln76.

I've been a Christian for about 26 1/2 years now and I still recall the very first verse of scripture which jumped out at me in the Bible and it's a scripture which I quickly believed and grabbed a hold of and it's application to my own life has helped me immensely throughout the years. I'm referring to the following:

John chapter 14

[25] These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
[26] But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

I believe that I can honestly say that I've never read the Bible since that day without FIRST praying to God the Father in Jesus' name that the Holy Ghost would "teach me all things AND BRING ALL THINGS TO MY REMEMBRANCE" in relation to "whatsoever Jesus had said unto me" in His Word. No matter how many NATURAL means we employ in relation to our memories, they're going to fail us at times, but the Holy Ghost will never fail us. I'm not suggesting that you need to just forsake all NATURAL attempts at memorization (even though I've never employed the same myself), but I am saying that none of us were ever intended to make it on our own. Christ hasn't left us "comfortless", but He has sent us "another Comforter"...

John chapter 14

[16] And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
[17] Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
[18] I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

..."even the Spirit of truth" and the word "Comforter" (Greek "paraklētos") means "called to one's side or aid":

Anyhow, whatever NATURAL means you choose to employ in relation to memorization, please be sure not to neglect the SUPERNATURAL help or aid of the "Comforter", the Holy Ghost. He is, after all, the One Who Inspired holy men to write the scriptures and He therefore knows what they actually say and mean and He's also more than capable of "bringing them to your remembrance" even if/when all NATURAL means fail.

I hope that this helps.

also, no distractions!! no texting, music, instagram, snap chat, or anything like that. clear your mind, read in silence. as Jesus said about praying, go into your room and close the door.
