I do not like many of the read through the Bible plans we see. I don't like the idea of just reading through the Bible just to read through the Bible.

SOLUTION...There is a read through the Bible plan called "91 weeks with Jesus". Not only is it a read through the Bible but there is an audio to listen too on each day you read plus a "dig deeper" for extra study. It's not just a read through the Bible, but a study through the Bible. I would recommend this to anyone. I myself am on week 3 day 3 and I look forward to the next reading.

You can access it on the Internet at Home it is well worth the 20-30 minutes a day it would take to read and listen too. If like me you want to read the Bible but don't like the idea of just reading check it out.

I am a fan of structured readings. The Bible and in particular the OT can be heavy going. It makes for easier reading and disciplines one into daily readings. An analysis is always useful too as one can miss something someone else picks up on.

Gotcha, Ive never been a fan of structured reading I guess. I found I started somewheres (I dont even recall) and was led to begin flipping back and forth between the books almost automatically comparing things.

I would challenge you to at least check it out and start it. :) it is a structured reading but so much more with the "short sermon " that goes with each day. You might be as surprised as I was when I started it.

I have heard that many people have difficulty getting into the scriptures, this might be for them maybe. I have a problem getting out of them, someone elses structure would be like putting a stick in my fan or something.

I've been studying the scriptures for 25 years. This might be for a newby I guess, Im sort of an old dog quite unwilling to start a new trick. But even from the start I was desirous of handling them (for myself).

But, I can identify with a long period of time in the beginning where I was yet getting familar with things, when nothing was jump starting for me and I was in that stalemate.

That would just feel foreign to me a little but I could be off in my thinking, because in the back of my mind the first thing I think of is how will you become familar with the beginings of his leadings in you if you are off following someone elses leading? Given we would be taught and led of the Holy Ghost who is able teaches us (with whom we ought to be familarizing ourselves with). Its "the beginnings of" especially, so I was somewhat afraid I would miss out or something (I think). Not getting accustomed (from the start) in the way He teaches us by way of comparing.

That would go through my head. But I dont use speed dial for much of the same reasons, I prefer to make my connections personally and manually (handling the word) rather then someone do it for me. Not to be led by someone else but Him (that type of thing). Not that that person couldnt be led by Him (thats not what I mean) its that in my mind Im like, "why rip yourself off? wait on the Spirit watch where He takes you Himself" ... that sorta thing. I have great confidence in His ability to teach and its just as if we need a matter of time and paying attention and getting his words into us first, and then come through Him they just come alive. Its was to that initial interchange or something.

Well, I dont even know if I am putting that right I just never understood all those plans, that would feel foreign to start a plan (it just wasnt registering with me).

But as MadParrotWoman pointed out there are some folks who prefer and do better with plans

Like DesiredHaven, I have always preferred to go where ever I sense in my spirit to read, or sometimes I'll actually get a strong thought of a certain book. It is letting the Spirit lead you. Been doing this for most of my adult years. I, too, don't like structured formats for myself. And, like DH, I have a problem getting "out" of the bible. Doing it this way gets me really involved and not wanting to leave.

I find that I have read through the bible completely many times just by doing this. And I love wide side margins where you can take notes on insights that come as you read.

Some of you already read this from me, but now the HS is having me write out most of the bible in longhand to linger on each word. I keep waiting for Him to tell me to "eat" it.

I will read and listen to several sessions over the next few days, then get back to you. It would be great if you could give us a little background on the author(s).

What the...???

lol.

Actually, I agree with you, but I just found your analogy to be humorous, yet true.

Personally, I don't have a problem with consulting commentaries and the like AS A SECONDARY SOURCE. I mean, none of us are ever going to get the full revelation of God and/or His Word all by ourselves on this side of eternity, so we can certainly "glean" from each other, but every "joint and band" in the body of Christ is supposed to be receiving something DIRECTLY FROM THE HEAD OF THE BODY, JESUS CHRIST, HIMSELF:

"And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God." (Colossians 2:19)

Again, every "joint and band" in the body of Christ ought to be receiving something directly "FROM THE HEAD" or from Christ in that He is where our "nourishment" originally or ultimately comes from. Of course, we're all to share said "nourishment" with each other that the entire body might be "knit together and increase with THE INCREASE OF GOD", but, again, it's "the increase OF GOD".

Anyhow, I'd personally advise anyone/everyone to shy away from commentaries, study Bibles and the like AS A PRIMARY SOURCE or else you're going to be in danger of becoming a disciple of the writer of the commentary, study Bible, etc. and his/her beliefs as opposed to becoming a disciple of Christ...and I've watched in horror as I've seen exactly what I just described happen time and time and time again over the years. Quite frankly, I think that anybody who takes it upon themselves to write or to record such things in which everything in the Bible is explained has a serious problem with PRIDE. Again, none of us has the full revelation of either God or His Word.

Well of course this isn't for everyone :) but may be right for some

Pastor John Soper is the senior pastor at Ridgeway Alliance church in NY. He has been with the Christian and Missionary Alliance church since 1973. He is also a adjunct professor at Alliance Theological seminary in Nyack NY.

Hey your home! Good to see you (online) lol

Yeah, I sort of borrowed that from my sister, she would always say that.

Yeah, but you know as children you can be tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine and cant discern your right from your left for a time, and thats just the nature of being children (which we are to be no more) but when I first started out being really hungry I had a period of time where I would tune into everything, eat, drink and everything else (of God) or so I thought. But somewheres in there (most especially in the beginning) turning to too many men (all putting their own spins on the word) began to make my own head spin.

So I felt the need to shut out their voices and find His (I began to lose His) and their voices were not speaking the same.

Then, I had a book burning party (and all was good again).

In the last few years I have been opened to commentaries, there are places I get stuck and I have need of the body (I agree) I look for another part of the body that is stronger then me in something, and get my benefit through Christ.

So commentaries yeah because we will all get stuck here or there and I appreciate a multitude of counselors in things I dont get but can weigh out their wisdom between them (but only when I am stuck, not to lean on them)

I just dont understand the importance of these plans because I dont really read anything outside the scriptures (except cookbooks for the most part).

I did purchase one book another poster I enjoyed reading had reccomended a couple of years ago, but I havent even cracked it open yet. I just wont read it (I dont even feel led to).

I did have a short period of time of reading books over 20 years ago but I havent since that time.

I know you are okay with it but I just never was with exception of that time, thats just me though, I cant see how its hindered me though.

I read you on the forums as you know, I try to keep it at whoever the Lord brings into my life at any given time.

God bless you

The solution.... Be a good Berean.

How do you be a good Berean?

(a) Keep an open mind to what others say in regards to the Scriptures.
(b) Test those things in the Scriptures to see whether those things be so or not.

In other words, it is good to listen and read commentaries from other believers on occasion, but if you are not checking those facts in the commentary against God's Word, then you are in trouble. Everything we learn must be tested and tried with the Word of God. But shutting yourself off completely to what other believers have to say about God's Word is not smart either. We can definitely learn alot from each other. For iron sharpens iron. Just be careful to check everything learned with the Word of God.

But not every person is alike. We are not cookie cutter Christian soldiers. We all must walk the path with Christ in different ways involving His Word.

Believe me, I'm 99.99% of the time in the Bible itself and occasionally checking commentaries and the like if I get stuck with something. My problem isn't really one of needing to learn more (although we're all ever learning or should be), but moreso of trying to figure out what to do with what I've already been taught. To whom much is given much is required...and that can be a scary thought/reality. Christ expects what He's given us back with "usury" or interest...

Now please do not misunderstand me with this forum. I know this isn't for everyone. I was just putting this out there for maybe someone like me who has wanted to do this but wanted more than to just "read" the whole Bible.

God bless you all for keeping in God's Word and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you and teach you. :)
