Ash Wednesday emphasizes two themes: our sinfulness before God and our human mortality. The service focuses on both themes, helping us to realize that both have been triumphed through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
During some Ash Wednesday services, the minister will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers. The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship. Historically, ashes signified purification and sorrow for sins.
It is traditional to save the palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday service to burn to produce ashes for this service. Sometimes a small card or piece of paper is distributed on which each person writes a sin or hurtful or unjust characteristic. The cards are then brought to the altar to be burned with the palm branches. The ash cross on the forehead is an outward sign of our sorrow and repentance for sins.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from palm branches blessed on the previous year's Palm Sunday, and placing them, in the shape of a cross, on the foreheads of participants to the accompaniment of the words "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Palm branches being what what the people laid down during what is called the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem the week of His crucifixion, riding on the foal of a donkey, as they sang His praises: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

last month was the anniversary of my nephew's death. he had just turned nine, and was mentally disabled.

it was a long, difficult four nights he was missing and finally found dead. my daughter Liz and i were with my sister and nieces during that time. for about two years afterward, i was so angry with God for what my recently widowed sister went through.

so angry! i didn't want to pray, or go to church, or glorify the Lord. (shame face)
but He... He held on to me when i was faithless, and my sister and i were talking Tuesday, reading Jude and 1 Peter
("To Him who is able to keep you from stumbling"... "kept by the power of God"...)

In the clearing stands a Christian, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him till he cried out
I am leaving! i am leaving! ...
...but the Christian still remains....

kept by the power of God. amen.

Oh, Ellie, I am so sorry to hear of such a tragic end to a short troubled life :( But God is good and gracious and faithful and merciful, His loving kindness and the surpassing riches of His love we can sometimes barely comprehend, yet even in what we can grasp, when we can grasp it and hold it tight and for dear life, we are slayed; knowing Him bring us to our knees in seeking after more of His bounties, which He is only so glad to have us know Him and bring glory to His Name above all names as He compassionately pours Himself out , and upholds those who turn to Him. Always grief brings that which we value into sharper focus. I am so glad you could find the gold in it :)
