Can someone apprise me of what it means to be "friends" with someone on this site? Someone has sent a request and I don't understand it. Is there somewhere here that is like facebook or something? Thanks.

It means nothing. If you accept a friend request, your posts will show up on that person's feed and they can easily read the threads you've posted in. Beyond that, it has no meaning.
