Yes that murder and adulterer was a man after Gods own heart. Why? because He asked God and sought Him for direction. He realized His downfall and relied on God. A totally different doctrine than what is taught today. When Davis failed is when He did not Seek Gods advice.

There is a big difference between saying one HAS TO OBEY (place them under law) and ACKNOWLEDGING one can not OBEY ACCORDING TO GODS STANDARD (which is perfection).

when one acknowledges they still can not obey Gods law in the way he requries (perfection) thus still needs Gods mercy (grace) they are not saying one does not have to obey, that is just a lie from the pits of hell.

they are meaningless works. called dead, because the one who does them are trying to earn something (salvation, blessings or rewards) as apposed to a living work. which is done out of love, with nothing expected in return.
