A good friend of mine was doing a study on hope and asked for my input and I gave it to him. Then I began to really start thinking of the differences between hope and faith and after a couple of months I wanted to ask for others input on this subject. I did some research on these two topics and came up with a definition for each.

FAITH: Assurance that God's promises will never fail even though we may never experience their fulfillment in our lifetime
1 Peter 1:8-9
[SUP]8 [/SUP]whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him,
yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,
[SUP]9 [/SUP]receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

HOPE: Confident Expectation
Job 11:18-19
18 You will be secure, because there is hope;
you will look about you and take your rest in safety.
[SUP]19 [/SUP]You will lie down, with no one to make you afraid,
and many will court your favor.

How do you define the difference between faith and hope? How do you apply it to your walk with God? Any other information or thoughts on this would be very much appreciated. Faith and Hope are essential to having and strengthening our relationship with our heavenly Father.

Regardless who has promised:

Faith is trust in promises made (that they will be performed).

Hope is confident expectation based on faith

If you claim faith but doubt the performances of promises made; then you are mistaken in your claim to faith.

If you truly trust a promiser to perform all promises made, then you indeed have faith.

If you truly believe that promises will be performed; then you can confidently expect that which is promised.

That confident expectation is hope.

Hope - From H6960; literally a cord (as an attachment (compare H6961)); figuratively expectancy: - expectation ([-ted]), hope, live, thing that I long for.

Faith (Hebrew word Emunah ) The Hebrew root aman means firm, something that is supported or secure. This word is used in Isaiah 22:23 for a nail that is fastened to a "secure" place. Derived from this root is the word emun meaning a craftsman. A craftsman is one who is firm and secure in his talent. Also derived from aman is the word emunah meaning firmness, something or someone that is firm in their actions. When the Hebrew word emunah is translated as faith misconceptions of its meaning occur. Faith is usually perceived as a knowing while the Hebrew emunah is a firm action. To have faith in God is not knowing that God exists or knowing that he will act, rather it is that the one with emunah will act with firmness toward God's will. Hebrew Word Meanings

So the word faith in Hebrew is a strong action towards the will of God while hope is our fleshly desires. Hope this make sense ;)

people use faith everyday and do not realize it. Everyone everyday wakes up and breathes air and has the faith that more air is available to them. People sit in chairs and have faith that it will not break and will hold them. There is a lot of forms of faith we use daily. Now hope to me is something I can not see but know without a doubt will happen. Peace in times of confusion is one evident trait of hope, Love is another one. No one can tame their tongue or love there enemies as there self without Jesus strength and there is hope in that alone.

Whenever I want to get clarity on something within the Scriptures, I think of how Jesus used parables (real world examples) to illustrate spiritual truth. This is why I see "faith" as having a belief as if it was in your possession now. For "Faith" is that thing you believe that is a reality for you with no actual evidence to prove otherwise. Now, "hope" is the eager expectation of something that is yet future. For example: A woman who is engaged to be married can have "faith" in her current relationship with her fiancé now in the present, but it is her eager "hope" and expectation to want to be married to him so as to enjoy the good things with him in marriage. She is hoping so much to be with him in marriage despite her current "present day faith" in their relationship. For a million and one things could happen between their current "present day faith relationship" and at the point they will be married. So she hopes. She waits in eager anticipation for that day of walking down the aisle and then kissing him after saying, "I do."

But she must exercise her "present day faith" that she has in their relationship in order to truly have a confident "hope" that they will be married. If not, (if she loses faith in their present relationship), then that eager expectation or "hope" will then start to fade. So "faith" and "hope" are joined together as one; They are tied together like two strings that tie a knot.

This is why "faith" and "hope" are not really all that separated. For Hebrews 11:1 defines "faith" as having a confidence, substance, reality, or possession of things hoped for. Here are few expressions of this thought in several translations.

Hebrews 11:1 KJV

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Hebrews 11:1 NLT
"Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."

Hebrews 11:1 HCSB
"Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen."

Hebrews 11:1 NET
"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for, being convinced of what we do not see."

Hebrews 11:1 PHILLIPS
"Now faith means putting our full confidence in the things we hope for, it means being certain of things we cannot see."

Hebrews 11:1 NCV
"Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it."

For in Hebrews chapter 11, we see "faith" being defined not only in confidently trusting in God at His Word, but we trust in His Word by acting upon it. Just as the woman who has "faith" in her present day relationship with her fiance. She develops and cultivates that relationship in the "hope" she will be married one day to him.

Anyways, when looking at the Scriptures, we learn that there is "hope" in "faith" and there is "faith" in "hope". They are essentially one, but one can take more prominence over the other.

For "faith" (When it is dominant over hope) is having a confidence or possession of "hope" in being more of a mental reality to us. We know we have God's promise that we will be with the Lord in Heaven one day. For we sit in heavenly places with him now. But to be overjoyed by knowing we will be with him one day (is another thing).

For "hope" (When it is dominant over faith) is having a joy and eager (but patient) expectation of the promise, who is Jesus Christ and spending eternity with Him. For He is our "hope." To be married to Him and forever knowing His love and joy to it's fullest capacity. We hope and yearn and desire and jump for joy in rejoicing for that day to be with Him in Heaven so much. We "hope" for that (Which is by faith). For I can believe I will be in Heaven with the Lord, but if I don't yearn, desire, get excited at that idea, then we are not building our "hope" like we are supposed to it's fullest potential. Yes, "faith" starts out as having "hope" in God's promises. Believing in those promises. But "hope" when realized in our life is a "strong desire" in joy upon God's promises (Whereby it moves us like a loving relationship should). For this kind of "hope" makes us want to do backflips (if we are able to do them) and shout for joy from the rooftops about God's love. For true happiness is in the God of Hope (which is by faith).

Anyways, I hope what I have written here has helped somebody today.

Oh, and please also look at Romans chapter 5. Read the entire chapter and let it soak in. For in the beginning of this chapter I believe it is telling us that there are two different aspects of how we work "hope" into our lives (of which I alluded to). For there is the "hope" within our justification (belief in our salvation in the Lord now). Then there is the "hope" of our sanctification where God works a joy (and rejoicing) within in us so as to endure persecution, which leads to patience, which then leads to experience (in walking with the Lord), which then leads to another deeper level of "hope."

In any event, may God bless you all this fine day.
And please be well.

With loving kindness to you in Christ (Who is our "hope" by "faith).

Sincerely,

~Jason.

In other words, in a nut shell, "faith" is more of a confident assurance of the promises we "hope" for. It is a mental reality for us.

However, when "hope" (when it is dominant in our lives) is from having the love of the Holy Ghost being spread within our hearts (to it's fullest potential) whereby we are emotionally moved to yearn and strongly desire the promise of our hope (Who is Jesus Christ).

now your getting there. Its the yearn that is placed in your heart by the Holy Spirit as your faith is in the work of the cross and not what you do. You will do as the Holy Spirit leads.

I know theirs a difference but have always felt hope and faith go hand and hand. Faith = substance of things hoped for. glad you brought this up though because I've never really thought of this

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, [SUP]4 [/SUP]to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, [SUP]5 [/SUP]who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. [SUP]6 [/SUP]In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials

Hope and Faith is everything to me. I have faith that God has no plan of destroying who I am or who I will be. I recently got my final grades today and ended up getting a 4.0 GPA. I had faith that I did my very best in all my classes. My hope was to get a good grade in all my classes. With hope and faith I know that God will never leave me and instead will always lift me up.

Yes, I also thought of 1 Corinthains chapter 13, as well. For 1 John 4:8 says, God is love; And from His love, we have faith, and then hope (i.e. hope meaning a burning strong emotional desire to be with him). This is love. Loving God with all our hearts (emotions), minds (thoughts), and wills (actions). Faith, hope, and love all working in harmony (With love being the greatest because God is love). For we love, because he loved us first (1 John 4:19 NLT).

I never believed otherwise, my friend. But thank you for agreeing.
It is so good we are in harmony on such a beautiful topic indeed.

Anyways, may the Lord's love shine upon you greatly today.

I am not so sure the verse says that. Please elaborate in more detail on Hebrews 11:1 and give a real world example. I am curious as to what you mean.

Peace and blessings be unto you.

Hebrews 11:1 - Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Romans 8:24 - For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?

Titus 1:2 - in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began.

Titus 2:13 - looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Titus 3:7 - that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Unlike the english word "hope," the N.T. word contains no uncertainty; it speaks of something that is certain. Hope - 1680 elpís (from elpō, "to anticipate, welcome") – properly, expectation of what is sure (certain). Without the clear and certain promises of the Word of God that salvation is through faith in Christ and we can KNOW that we have eternal life (1 John 5:13), the believer would have no hope. If we have saving faith in Christ then we have this hope.

Agreed. I believe hope is a part of one's faith and that it is in having a confident assurance. A "hope" that is in Justification of one's faith by believing. A mental acknowledging. I believe there is another level of "hope" that grows deeper as we walk in the Lord and his good ways, though. I believe this is the "hope" of Sanctification (Which starts by enduring persecution --- that leads to patience --- that leads to experience (A deeper walk with the Lord) --- that then produces the "hope of sanctification"). This type of "hope" is a heart level kind of hope. It is where one yearns with every fiber of their being passionately for our "hope", who is Jesus Christ. I believe the beginning of Romans 5 alludes to these two different kinds of hope. A "hope" that grows in intensity within our faith. Just as a woman's desire will grow in intensity to be married to her fiancé as her wedding day draws closer and closer, if she loves him deeply. The "hope" grows by faith and love. For while "hope" is a part of the very definition of faith, the Scriptures also distinguish between them, too. For 1 Peter 1:21 essentially says our faith and hope should be in God. 1 Corinthians 13:13 says there are 3 things that abide: --- (1) Faith (2) Hope (3) Love (With love being the greatest). 1 Thessalonians 1:3 says remember without ceasing your work of faith, labours of love, and patience of hope.

In other words, Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as having hope. Yet, the Scriptures also distinguish between them, too. I believe it is important to understand that difference.

Anyways, may the Lord bless you all today.
