14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
5
For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:

2 Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
3 And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
4 And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec......10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Paul is setting up the entire book of Hebrews through the prism of the priesthood

Aaron,abraham,melchesidek,David,Jesus.

The priesthood is the heartbeat of heaven. It is HOW God reaches TO man

It was Jesus AS A PRIEST ,on the cross. This is the backdrop of this event

Nope, a Jew did not give me the New Testament, The Jew gave me the New Testament.... and that's the only Jew I need to understand scripture. I don't need Jewish fables to understand the bible.
You need something. Because when you say that you are demonstrating you know nothing of the Bible.

Jn 4:34 "Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work."

That work would include coming to earth start the gospel ministry, die for the sins of mankind, fulfill the OT law replacing it with His NT gospel.

I think many good comments in here. I will add my two cents to the rest.

First we must realize that man's fallen condition left him in such a state that man had become alienated from God because of His fallen condition. God becoming incarnated in the man Jesus was for the purpose of restoring man to his rightful place in relationship to God that had been utterly damaged in the fall.

This question about the words "it is finished" is a very good question I think and much could be shared on the subject. Remember also that when Jesus was with His disciples He said in reference to His coming crucifixion and resurrection that He was... "going, to prepare a place for them" (John 14:3).

It is my contention that the words "go to prepare" and the words "it is finished" are related to one another. God's desire for fallen man was to transfer fallen Adamic man (the old man) into the New man (Christ) and thus bring man into God and restoring man to the relationship with God that was always intended. For this to happen the Lord Jesus had to accomplish not only the living out of a perfect human living, but also a redeeming death (terminating the old creation) on the cross that would be followed by His resurrection and ultimately the release of that resurrection life to His believers.

Thus, by His death, resurrection, ascension, and being poured out as the life giving spirit became the finished work of Christ that would prepare or make way for all His believers to be brought into a living relationship with Christ as the many members of His body.

This is also why at His death the veil to the Holy of Holies in the temple was rent in two, symbolizing that for the first time since the fall, man could come into direct contact with God. The Tree of Life, which was barred from man in the garden of Eden at mans fall was once again available to man for His sustenance to fulfill Gods purpose in man.

Yes, it is finished.

No,"it is finished" did not refer to his "earthly work before his death".

The Resurrection, and the descention into paradise,as well as the assention to the Father to present his blood of the new covenant had not been accomplished yet.

It has to do with the priesthood.

Remember Ciaphas had torn his vesture. By law he was forbidden to perform as a priest that passover.
(This is a clue)............change in priesthood. Fascinating,right?

Now,go back to the Jordan and Jesus baptism. "permit it at this time" ...see that? Ciaphas was a roman appointee. The correct priest was Zacharias,John's father, which made John a disenfranchised priest.
IOW the priesthood changed THROUGH JOHN,AT THE JORDN. (remember,Jordan represents change)

Now we can kinda get the real picture as to what is REALLY HAPPENING.
Without this knowledge and prism, the cross CAN NOT BE UNDERSTOOD.

Here's the deal;
At passover, there were 3 sacrifices. Morning ,mid day, evening. Note 3 men on the cosses.(side info for no extra charge)
At the temple, when the priest had FINISHED his ordained work in the HOH,he emerged, hopefully succesful, and said "it is finishd ,in hebrew.

That is WHY Jesus said that.
It is his ordined action as DAVIDICAL PRIEST,not his "finished work"

Remember,you herd it here first.:D

Excellent! But what exactly is His Father's business?
Reconcilingthe human spirit beyond captivity of the mortal mind that is prisoner of this world and so as to unite us with that spirit within so that we are aware, conscious, of the link we have with the creator.

We think we're all this flesh that first is enraptured by all that this world has to offer and that due to our five senses that take it all in as real and right now. We don't think there's anything else inside us that can rise above the rolling picture and sensations this life affords. We are what we see. And that is what sin is. We veer from what is right into what feels good right now.

Reconciling ourselves to our true nature, our spirit that is born in the image and likeness of all power that is God, allows us to link to a higher wisdom and understanding as we navigate this world. We are dead in our sins. We are encased in the tomb of flesh that convinces us that's all there is.
Redemption puts that into perspective. What came first? The soul? Or the body?

As simple as it can be, this exclamation that we have from the Lord Jesus Christ was said after he had fulfilled the purpose for which he came, to put all sin away. That purpose fulfilled the will of the Father and the will of man. He finished the work as the Son of God and the Son of man. This work could not have been done by any other except for the Father's only begotten Son. There was not a single disciple who walked with him that understood this work and it took many years for them to fully understand it experientially. This work must be taught every believer for the rest of their life as believers. It must be practiced between believers when they fail or fall into sin. It must be esteemed as the doctrine of Christ and never compromised or diminished in any way. The finished work is what we are to lift up that all men might be drawn unto Him.

Popeye, you have eaten a tainted can of spinach.
Anybody can do that, what you did.
Show me where I am wrong.
Show me the wrong dimension of the priesthood.
Show me how ,when the blood was sprinkled, and the priest emerged his words "it is finished" ,had no connection with Jesus our priest(mabye you think Jesus is not a priest) saying those exact words.

here is little different version of the priesthood ordinances FORESHADOWING the mesiah's sacrifice"
http://yahfollower.webs.com/messiahspringfeasts.htm
"During the early morning before sunrise, the lamb would be observed to made sure it was perfect. Then, during the morning at sunrise it would be prepared with songs and rejoicing. Next, during mid point of the day The High Priest would lick his lips and announce "It is finished!" He would then kill the lamb.

Before sundown, the lamb would be taken down to a special hill and into a special oven where the lamb would be cooked. While the lamb is being cooked, the High Priest would cross a bridge parallel to the largest graveyard and tombs in the world. "

Hard to believe so many reject no brainer parallels in the priesthood.

This next truth will really get the mental folks, lol:D:
As a final note, when Mary and the others came to the tomb of Messiah, they found the white linen that covered Him folded in front of the tomb. What does this mean? In those days, when you were not finished with eating but needed to leave the table, your napkin would be folded and placed on your plate to let people know "I'm not finished, do not touch anything or remove anything! I will return!"

From that same webpage.

I never knew this.......good stuff

From that same webpage.

Woah,check this out;
"While Messiah was in She'ol, as the High Priest was preparing the First Fruit harvest, so was Messiah in She'ol! Then, as Scripture records, at the time of the First Fruits harvest, the earth shook open the graves, and the Messiah awoke and harvested the First Fruits, at the same time the Priests were!
What does this mean? It means, the Messiah came back from death and brought back from death the first fruits- the prophets and patriarchs. Scripture records that not only Messiah preached in the streets, but the awakened prophets as well. Then, the Messiah returned to the Holy Temple of Heaven and presented the First Fruits in heaven (the souls under the incense altar in Revelation). He then came back to earth."

If that don't light you soggy wagon, nothing will.

As Jesus expired he cried out a "loud shout". Both Matthew and Luke mention this shout (Matt. 27:50 and Luke 23:46). John tells us that Jesus died with these words on his lips, "It is finished" (John 19:30). These parting words express triumph rather than defeat. Jesus bowed his head and gave up his spirit knowing that the strife was now over and the battle was won. Even on the cross Jesus knew the joy of victory. What the Father sent him into the world to do has now been accomplished. Christ offered himself without blemish to God and he put away sin by the sacrifice of himself (Hebrews 9:24-26). We can find no greater proof of God's love for us than the willing sacrifice of his Son on the cross. "O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Cor. 15:55-57)

"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost." -John 19:30

My hubby and I were discussing this Scripture last night, and we are in agreement (although we come to it in different ways) that the "it" is the debt that Jesus paid for us all -- the fulfillment of the Law.

So what say you? How would you describe the "it?"
wow praise God. I have seen so many people post "it was finished at the cross" but never have I seen someone ask the question what was finished.

People just assume everything, but you have hit the nail on the head, it was teh sacrifice for sin the clearing of the debt the taking away or the curse. but Jesus has not finished everything He is still working for our salvation.

It is the ministry of reconciliation, whereby sinful mankind is brought into fellowship, and right relationship with Holy God.

The gentile church needs the enlightenment of the Jewish OT,and MESSIANIC jew to unravel the mysteries of the NT.

All my 30+ years of walking with the Lord,I have never heard anyone get the "it is finished"thinggy right.
A messianic Jew unlocked this for me..

We all are just guesing w/o revelation
And yet what that Priest was doing in the HoH and the animal sacrifices made to God did not redeem the sinner who offered the unblemished animal for sacrifice. That animal simply covered their sin, it did not redeem them from their sins.
The redemptive plan of God was complete.
“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body …let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith.” (Hebrews 10:19-22)

Only Jesus, the perfect unblemished lamb, did that. His blood paid the sin debt of the whole world of sinners forever. When Jesus said it is finished he meant that the sacrificial laws were no longer in place. He had paid all debts to God for everyone of us.
