"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost." -John 19:30

My hubby and I were discussing this Scripture last night, and we are in agreement (although we come to it in different ways) that the "it" is the debt that Jesus paid for us all -- the fulfillment of the Law.

So what say you? How would you describe the "it?"

Jesus paid the price for our sin with His blood.
He gave His life so we could live forever.

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

I say sin, which is in agreement with what you said - fulfillment of the law. Because sin without the law is dead.

Jas_1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

The first recorded words of Jesus were “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” And of course we know what His last recorded words were before His death as a man, “It is finished.”

He finished His Fathers business.

"Yes", He 'finished' the mission He was sent here for. (I like that, "first & last" words.)

He had completed everything that was prophesied in the past about Him, and plus He was the first to be born from the laws that had became perfect ( acknowledge whom God is, and merciful), if there wasn't none to be found, then mankind will be consider as being worthless and will be tossed out with rest of the trash where's there will be weeping and gnashing of the teeth.

Matthew 26:54 52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

Matthew 5:18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

Matthew 8:10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom
( The ones that says lord, lord) will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Hosea 6:6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice
( the regulations of the laws), and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

God can care less for them to have followed the laws, but He hoping that they will come to acknowledge Him through the laws, to show that He is all knowing; but still we listen to the serpent that was in the garden.

Exodus 7:17 This is what the Lord says: By this you will know that I am the Lord: With the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water of the Nile, and it will be changed into blood.

He has been singing this same ole' song all through out the old testament, trying to get the people to acknowledge Him; and still hasn't came to acknowledge Him, or we wouldn't be afraid of dying.

I agree for sure......he accomplished the mission that he was sent to do....take our sin upon himself, satisfy the Heavenly Father's requirements for the redemption of humanity and make it possible for the imputation of the righteousness of God unto those who believe into the saving faith of Christ.....good post for sure!

Excellent! But what exactly is His Father's business?
Repentance.., John was trying to turn the peoples heart back towards God, and that is what John was telling them to repent.

1 Kings 18:37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

Luke 1:17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Acts 7:39 “But our ancestors refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.

Matthew 13:15 For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’

Excellent! But what exactly is His Father's business?
to heal the blind, and the lame, and the sick.
that's US. too blind to see Truth, too lame to walk to Him, too sin sick to go to Him anyway.

the only way to accomplish it was for the Lord Jesus to live a perfect life, die a sinner's death, and be raised from death to life as proof His sacrifice was accepted.
He was wounded for our transgressions, and raised for our justification.

now we, too as God bids us come to Him, are raised from death to newness of life.
we receive not just a clean record...we receive Christ's record! :)
because the primary foundation of the Christian faith isn't moral improvement,
it's substitution.
our mess for His mercies...our guilt for His grace.
oh, there will be moral improvement, and He does that, too.

it's really, really Good News. :)

"For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak." John 12:49-50.

The new testament was written in Greek. "it is finished" translates to tetelestai. "Paid in full".

When Jesus was about to take his last breath on the cross he declared that his sacrifice as the perfect unblemished lamb of God paid humanities sin debt in full to the Father.

"When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost." -John 19:30

It is finished refers to the cup Jesus Christ was to drink. He prayed for the cup to pass from Him the night before, as all know.

On a side note - He also brought to an end the animal sacrifices required for sin - all symbolic of and satisfied by His blood.

The "it" is the dept for our sins that He paid in full by His blood, as there no longer remains a need for a sacrifice for sins no more for Christ was the one time perfect sacrifice for all time.

Now with that being said I do not know why people keep saying He fulfilled the law, as we should be saying He through us by walking in love fulfills the law. Jesus says by following the two greatest commandments to love fulfills the law, not His crucifixion, and Apostle Paul shows this same teaching in Romans 13 where he says by walking in love upholds (keeps) and thus fulfills the law (commandments).
The second part that seems to get left off from here is how take this phrase, "it is finished," to do away with repentance and baptism that the bible says is needed to receive that remission by the Lord. Then they tend to leave off confession of Him and forgiving of others, and also the confessing of future sins as Apostle John states is needed in his epistle to receive that remission. People want something for nothing, but you have to give yourself to Him first and then the Lord says in Luke 12 for much has been given much will be required........

Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible

"the whole work his Father gave him to do, which was to preach the Gospel, work miracles, and obtain eternal salvation for his people, all which were now done, or as good as done; the whole righteousness of the law was fulfilled, an holy nature assumed, perfect obedience yielded to it, and the penalty of death endured; hence a perfect righteousness was finished agreeably to the law, which was magnified and made honourable by it, and redemption from its curse and condemnation secured; sin was made an end of, full atonement and satisfaction for it were given; complete pardon procured, peace made, and redemption from all iniquity obtained; all enemies were conquered; all types, promises, and prophecies were fulfilled, and his own course of life ended: the reason of his saying so was, because all this was near being done, just upon finishing, and was as good as done; and was sure and certain, and so complete, that nothing need, or could be added to it; and it was done entirely without the help of man, and cannot be undone; all which since has more clearly appeared by Christ's resurrection from the dead, his entrance into heaven, his session at God's right hand, the declaration of the Gospel, and the application of salvation to particular persons: "

I'm not a Greek expert and I ask this question for my own understanding... How do you get "Paid in full" out of this:

G5055
τελέω
teleō
tel-eh'-o
From G5056; to end, that is, complete, execute, conclude, discharge (a debt): - accomplish, make an end, expire, fill up, finish, go over, pay, perform.

No,"it is finished" did not refer to his "earthly work before his death".

The Resurrection, and the descention into paradise,as well as the assention to the Father to present his blood of the new covenant had not been accomplished yet.

It has to do with the priesthood.

Remember Ciaphas had torn his vesture. By law he was forbidden to perform as a priest that passover.
(This is a clue)............change in priesthood. Fascinating,right?

Now,go back to the Jordan and Jesus baptism. "permit it at this time" ...see that? Ciaphas was a roman appointee. The correct priest was Zacharias,John's father, which made John a disenfranchised priest.
IOW the priesthood changed THROUGH JOHN,AT THE JORDN. (remember,Jordan represents change)

Now we can kinda get the real picture as to what is REALLY HAPPENING.
Without this knowledge and prism, the cross CAN NOT BE UNDERSTOOD.

Here's the deal;
At passover, there were 3 sacrifices. Morning ,mid day, evening. Note 3 men on the cosses.(side info for no extra charge)
At the temple, when the priest had FINISHED his ordained work in the HOH,he emerged, hopefully succesful, and said "it is finishd ,in hebrew.

That is WHY Jesus said that.
It is his ordined action as DAVIDICAL PRIEST,not his "finished work"

Remember,you herd it here first.:D
