Some people seem to forget that the story of Ananias and Sapphira happened in the New Testament.I heard a sermon on this yesterday and wondered what others thought about this story in Scripture. Please add your thoughts on this but also please stay on topic.

Acts 5-
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
11 And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

A couple verses always come to mind of Ananias and Sapphira,

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Sin has consequences, even to the believer, perhaps especially to the believer, who should know better. Also it's an example of this verse,

1 John 5:16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

It was an instance of, straightaway, sin that leads to physical death, an admonition to all that sin will be dealt with in the believer, one way or another. Again, God is not playing games, is not to be trifled with: God is not mocked. Christ's blood is precious, not cheap.

An interesting aside here,

Acts 5:3-4 Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Notice how the Trinity nature, in this case the deity of the Holy Spirit, is affirmed, lying to the Holy Spirit lying to God.

I think the same could be said here too kaylagrl, although not sure, because through Peter the Holy Ghost judged them and the two were dragged out and here the Holy Ghost through Paul seems to judge a one for trying to turn another away from the faith.

Acts 13:4
So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

Acts 13:5 And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister.

Acts 13:6And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus:

Acts 13:7 Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.

Acts 13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation ) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

Acts 13:9 Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,

Acts 13:10
And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

Acts 13:11
And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

Acts 13:12 Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

If you use the word judgement and find somethng to compare it to the above (and coming near in judgment seems to fit)

For example,

Mal 3:4 And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

He testifies that He (even God) would a witness against the sorcerers also, and there is "a similarity" in such a judgment (if only in respects to a "for judgment" which makes blind) even as by the Spirit of Christ who speaks of for judgment he is come in relation to them that are blind and can see too.

Acts 13:8-12 seems to show God through Paul come near to be a swift witness against Elymas (his name by interpretation is sorcerer) there.

As it says, I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers

Even as through Paul, somewhat similar as it was delivered through Peter.

Whereas shortly after issuing a judgment (if we determine it as that) we see both Annanias and Sapphira who lied to God fall dead (in the picture of Peter) and we see Elymas (the sorcerer) who was turning another from the faith of Jesus Christ made blind by the hand of the Lord as a mist of darkness come over him. Which just ressembles a similar thing in the judgment Christ speaks of which makes men blind as well (even if this one come differently) or be only for a season).

That picture does somewhat reflect what His coming near "to judgment"

Also great points! It seems we are preached a soft gospel these days. We're told we're living in grace, and we are,but do we abuse that grace? It seems that we are preached a gospel of all love.To hear people talk the God of the OT is vengeful and mean, where as Jesus is all love and forgiveness with no judgement. People forget these NT verses. It was a wakeup call to me.Be careful not to abuse the grace of God.We need to be reminded God is righteous and just.

Seems as if swift witness and swift destruction are spoken of in the old but also confirmed in the new

Another example, that could probly be shown (in the old) but Peter seems to affirm as well, could probly be shown here

Duet 18:20
But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.

2Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Like here Hannaniah teaching rebellion against the Lord

Jerm 28:15Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet,Hear now, Hananiah;
The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.

Jerm 28:17 So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

Because the LORDS judgment was to cast him from the face of the earth (or to die for this) as we see here as with Peter.

Although with Peter and Paul, the judgment seemed far more swifter then that which we observe in Hananiah (I think) bad with numbers, so I cant tell how long it took, but seemed to be less immediate then in the NT. I think the Sons of Aaron was like lightning when God didnt approve of their strange fire.

Great topic though, glad you brought this up

I believe in the strength of grace, it having an effect past a form of godliness but more in accord with the doctrine of Christ which is after godliness, he has given all we need, we are to exercise ourselves unto the same through the Spirit of God.

Sometimes there appears to be two kinds of grace, one that seems more like a license and the other which teaches the one to deny worldly and ungodly lusts, like teachers of a kind of grace that is soft on denying oneself verses mortifying the flesh.

I think I understand what you might mean.

yahweh is still the same today as he was then, and forever ... he hasn't become more lenient on liars now in 2015 than he did then either.

just read a few posts that followed the op.

there is no "soft" gospel , ..... what is referred to as a "soft" or other places "cheap grace" gospel,

is a false gospel with no power to save anyone's soul, and visible in that the false gospel has no power

to change a person's life. test everything in prayer and in yahweh's WORD - test test test, pray pray pray.... only
only yahweh is able , as he pleases, to reveal the TRUTH about everything and anything...

and he is pleased to do so in and to those who trust him and who he has called and chosen,

those who are living HIS WAY, as HE directs their lives....

Yes He is a God of Judgment Today.. He has not Changed.. Man tries to change Him, declares Him Loving Gracious Merciful, Holy, yet a God who would never Judge. Jesus would never do something like that! He is a Loving God, not a God who Judges.... lolz.. Righteous Judgment is APART of His Holy Character. indeed.. and it is in Jugement that God is Glorified-------->

[TABLE="width: 100%"]
[TR]
[TD="class: vDispa"]But the LORD of Hosts shall be exalted in Judgment, and God that is Holy shall be Sanctified in Righteousness.
Isaiah 5
[/TD]
[/TR]
[/TABLE]

God Judged those in the OT, those in un belief , even after seeing His Mighty Hand bring them out from under Egyptian Bondage, an earthquake He used in that one....
Ananias and Sapphira another example , Paul talked about Hymeanaus and Alexander, two heretics who cause Paul great distress, but they were turned over to Satan so that they would not learn to Blaspheme, another one Paul talked about was Alexander the Coppersmith, 'the LORD reward him according to his works'. evil works against Paul . Even John talked about someone named Diotrephes, who loved to be FIRST in everything, prating against others with a malicious Mouth.... How God dealt with these others not sure, but with Ananias and Sapphira it was physical death for 'lying' to the Holy Ghost....

An interesting aside here,

Jesus told us the Father in him was the one which doeth the works, that the Son did nothing of himself

Just as in Acts

Acst 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power:
who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil;
for God
was with him.

Even here, God in Christ (recconciling the world to himself) commits to these...

2 Cr 5:19
To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself,
not imputing their trespasses unto them;
and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Jesus also said, if he judged his judgment was just whereas these (in who that same Holy Spirit) is say...

2 Cr 5:20
Now then we are ambassadors for Christ,
as though God did beseech
you by us:
we pray you
in Christ's stead,
be ye reconciled to God.

God then confirming them by the same Spirit in various things.
Like a pattern of things set forth through each of them

No man caused Annaias or Sapphira to fall dead anymore then any man cause a mist of darkness to fall upon Elymas the power is shown as being of God, but the people rejoiced at God in Christ about God giving such power to men.

Folks dont particularly like these other parts, but they are there.

Today, someone might say to Peter (who didnt know the power of God) who are you?

How do you know anything? Do you make yourself God?

That sort of thing, how easy that would be with how we reason apart from the scripture and then find ourselves up against what might appear to be a contradiction.

That in your post struck me, sorry kaylagrl if I might have veered a little

This world has been under judgment for some time now, ever since Jesus announced it....
John 12:31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.

Jesus said he came not to send peace but a sword. Just look at the world and you'll see His words are true.

Yes I totally do believe in grace and unmerited favor. But I feel abuse of grace is being taught. That we can live a sort of Christian life and can get by with a push. The Bible doesn't teach that. Also we have been taught that God is all love and very seldom is judgement preached about now days.I believe we are under the blood but these verses we have all shared goes against the soft gospel that some preach. It was a sermon that convicted me to be more careful not to abuse Gods grace.

Would being nigh unto a cursing be considered a judgment?

But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected,
and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

I know he was persuaded of better things that accompanied their own salvation but that is also in there

He says the Father takes away the branches in him that bear no fruit.

Im thinking, that which beareth thorns and briers arent bearing fruit (obviously) so where does the Father take those branches in him which bear no fruit?

Im not really asking (to veer the topic) but according to the same I was wondering if that could be considered a judgment in respects to being cursed (in that particular unfruitful state of things)?

Or at least being nigh to it (for bearing thorns and briers).

I dont think Hebrews was saying that this was of the better things that he hoped would accompany the other.

Look around you, Gods judgement falls everyday on people, they reap what they sow.
You have to think about the world in which we live. The Lord wants us to discover life, for us to take responsibility for the things we have and do. Look at man. Everyday you will see people passing the buck, it was not me, I was just following orders, I dare not take the risk, it is more than my jobs worth.

The extreme charismatics want their heart to tell them what to do, to become other, so they just flow here and there and everything just falls into place.

So the Lord waits, he waits for the crop to bear fruit, to grow and show its value. The crop he sows in our hearts is love, and what he expects is acts of love that come from a pure heart. He does not want people who pander to him, or are all show, or appear one way, and behind the scenes behave in another.

But where real authority is questioned or His will is crossed judgement falls and people die. But most times you would never know, because he desires love and truth break forth, and those who do evil, are shown for what they really are.

But if like Anaisas and Sapphira, they lied to the Lord in a place of unbelievable revelation and power, judgement fell.
Make no mistake, judgment is going to fall on the prosperity gospel and those who preach this insanity. When the hypocracy has come to its final end, all will be laid bare.

This is the Word you are probably looking for... Jude spoke of a type of people that would manifest in the end days....--->

For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodlymen, turning the Grace of our God into Lasciviousness, and Denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. Jude 1:4

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Amazing you bring this up because I just experienced someone 'like' this.. arrogant, mocking, right in my face. I see alot of different faces on a daily basis in this line of Work.. this 'pharisee' always picks out where I 'sin'. when he's here and Im here.. lolz... but he turns the grace of God into a free for all, he neither knows Jesus nor the Father , hardened, beyond the reach of the Spirit of Grace. 'see you made a mistatke there'.. see you made a mistake over here'. usually the words that come out of his mouth.. Today I finally asked, you on a Sin Hunt? are you a sin hunter? told him, you know, Jesus told guys like you that you would not escape the Damnation of Gehenna, the scribes and Pharisees, he didnt stick around much longer... smh.... I tremble at what is coming for him...

Hebrews 10:26-31[SUP]26 [/SUP]For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
[SUP]27 [/SUP]But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
[SUP]28 [/SUP]He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
[SUP]29 [/SUP]Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
[SUP]30 [/SUP]For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
[SUP]31 [/SUP]It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

[SUP]15 [/SUP]Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
[SUP]16 [/SUP]Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
[SUP]17 [/SUP]For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
[SUP]18 [/SUP]For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
[SUP]19 [/SUP]And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
[SUP]20 [/SUP](For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
[SUP]21 [/SUP]And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake
[SUP]22 [/SUP]But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
[SUP]23 [/SUP]To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
[SUP]24 [/SUP]And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

I dont understand following a grace as it is taught (of others) but rather letting His grace teach you

Those Christ loves he rebukes, and chastens so love is inclusive of being rebuked and chastened

Not everyone bearing a rebuke is correct, afterall Peter began to rebuke the Lord, but it is acceptable to see a rebuke as done in love when done faithfully in Jesus Christ.

Paul speaks of the Lord judging him and caring very little of mans judgment, and that too has to do with the Lord chastening us because when we are judged we are chastened of the Lord.

Theres some really cool things in all of that also.

That was one of the most comforting studies.

Some folks dont believe he does that. I find great comfort in that he does.

Someone asked me once, why do you believe God wants to chasten you? he was sort of laughing at the fact that I understood that as a reality whereas he was making sport saying, why? Like, what did you do? He was mocking ofcourse, and I just responded, well, if you be without chastisement what are you called according to Hebrews?

I thank God for his grace, he has called us unto holiness not uncleaness. That same grace teaches us to deny worldly and ungodly lusts and to live soberly and righteously in this present world.

God bless you sister

I was going to post verse 27 on that fearful expectation but I would have cut it short of the impact, I am glad you posted it

Even the cross shows the judgment of God. He has and He will judge. His judgment shows He is a just judge. Saving only those who have faith in Jesus. All others, sadly, remain in death. That's all part of God's righteous judgment.
