Big Drop in Share of Americans Calling Themselves Christian

The Christian share of adults in the United States has declined sharply since 2007, affecting nearly all major Christian traditions and denominations, and crossing age, race and region, according to an extensive survey by the Pew Research Center.
Seventy-one percent of American adults were Christian in 2014, the lowest estimate from any sizable survey to date, and a decline of 5 million adults and 8 percentage points since a similar Pew survey in 2007.
The Christian share of the population has been declining for decades, but the pace rivals or even exceeds that of the country’s most significant demographic trends, like the growing Hispanic population. It is not confined to the coasts, the cities, the young or the other liberal and more secular groups where one might expect it, either.

“The decline is taking place in every region of the country, including the Bible Belt,” said Alan Cooperman, the director of religion research at thePew Research Center and the lead editor of the report.
The decline has been propelled in part by generational change, as relatively non-Christian millennials reach adulthood and gradually replace the oldest and most Christian adults. But it is also because many former Christians, of all ages, have joined the rapidly growing ranks of the religiously unaffiliated or “nones”: a broad category including atheists, agnostics and those who adhere to “nothing in particular.”

Unaffiliated Rise; Christians Fall

The Christian share of adults fell to 70.6 percent from 78.4 percent between 2007 and 2014, with declines among all major Christian denominations.

The Pew survey, which included 35,000 adults, offers an unusually comprehensive account of religion in the United States because the Census Bureau does not ask Americans about their religion. Most other nongovernmental surveys do not interview enough adults to allow precise estimates, do not ask other detailed questions about religion or do not have older surveys for comparison.
The report does not offer an explanation for the decline of the Christian population, but the low levels of Christian affiliation among the young, well educated and affluent are consistent with prevailing theories for the rise of the unaffiliated, like the politicization of religion by American conservatives, a broader disengagement from all traditional institutions and labels, the combination of delayed and interreligious marriage, and economic development.

Over all, the religiously unaffiliated number 56 million and represent 23 percent of adults, up from 36 million and 16 percent in 2007, Pew estimates. Nearly half of the growth was from atheists and agnostics, whose tallies nearly doubled to 7 percent of adults. The remainder of the unaffiliated, those who describe themselves as having “no particular religion,” were less likely to say that religion was an important part of their lives than eight years ago.
The ranks of the unaffiliated have been bolstered by former Christians. Nearly a quarter of people who were raised as Christian have left the group, and ex-Christians now represent 19 percent of adults.
Attrition was most substantial among mainline Protestants and Roman Catholics, who have declined in absolute numbers and as a share of the population since 2007. The acute decline in the Catholic population, which fell by roughly 3 million, is potentially a new development. Most surveys have found that the Catholic share of the population has been fairly stable over the last few decades, in no small part because it has been reinforced by migration from Latin America.

The main reason is that many who call them Christians are not saved.
They have no concept of what it means to be born again.

So that is the main reason why folks are leaving the church. The church has many problems internally because GOD is not at the helm reigning.

I can do a survey in my backyard on the Christians who do not attend church any longer. Call your local churches in the telephone book stating you are doing a survey because you might be surprise how the numbers are greater! Lets start with the Catholic Church Closings in New York:

[h=2]Statistics and Reasons for Church Declinehttp://www.churchleadership.org/apps/articles/default.asp?articleid=42346&columnid=4545[/h]
Read the full article for yourselves:

[h=1]
By Dr. Richard J. Krejcir

Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds. Proverbs 27:23
For the last 15 plus years, we, at the Francis A. Schaeffer Institute of Church Leadership Development (FASICLD) in partnership with Into Thy Word Ministries (another Francis Schaeffer vision), have been in careful, steadfast research in quest of "why so many churches are failing."
What the Statistics Tell Us
This quest started in 1992 as a Fuller Institute project that was picked up byFASICLD in 1998, seeking what had happened and why the bride of Christ was in decline. God's marvelous Church has become culturally irrelevant and even distant from is prime purpose of knowing Him, growing in Him, and worshipping Him by making disciples! This is evidenced by what is going on in our culture and in our church. Most of the statistics tell us that nearly 50% of Americans have no church home. In the 1980s, membership in the church had dropped almost 10%; then, in the 1990s, it worsened by another 12% drop-some denominations reporting a 40% drop in their membership. And now, over half way through the first decade of the 21[SUP]st[/SUP] century, we are seeing the figures drop even more!
What is Going on with the Church in America?
The United States Census Bureau Records give some startling statistics, backed up by denominational reports and the Assemblies of God U.S. Missions:
· Every year more than 4000 churches close their doors compared to just over 1000 new church starts!
· There were about 4,500 new churches started between 1990 and 2000, with a twenty year average of nearly 1000 a year.
· Every year, 2.7 million church members fall into inactivity. This translates into the realization that people are leaving the church. From our research, we have found that they are leaving as hurting and wounded victims-of some kind of abuse, disillusionment, or just plain neglect!
· From 1990 to 2000, the combined membership of all Protestant denominations in the USA declined by almost 5 million members (9.5 percent), while the US population increased by 24 million (11 percent).
· At the turn of the last century (1900), there was a ratio of 27 churches per 10,000 people, as compared to the close of this century (2000) where we have 11 churches per 10,000 people in America! What has happened?
· Given the declining numbers and closures of Churches as compared to new church starts, there should have been over 38,000 new churches commissioned to keep up with the population growth.
· The United States now ranks third (3[SUP]rd[/SUP]) following China and India in the number of people who are not professing Christians; in other words, the U.S. is becoming an ever increasing "un-reached people group."
· Half of all churches in the US did not add any new members to their ranks in the last two years.
· So, why do they leave-besides because of death? Why are they not coming?
More Startling Data
Between 1992 and 2002, 77% to 87% (160 million in 1992) of Americans identified themselves as Christians in most studies. However, what constitutes a Christian or a churchgoer is the question. One study that I did between 1992 and 2002 had surprising results. I found that church attendance may be half what those survey results stated. Many polls have indicated that the percentage of people who regularly attend a church service in the United States is around 40% to 50%, 20% in Canada, and 8% or less in Europe. But, when we started to count people from denominational reports and compare to census data and University research data, the numbers that were originally declared dropped by half!
· 22% of Americans "frequently" attended church in 1992, including Orthodox, Evangelical, or Protestant. (The reason why the other research is variant is due to how they ask the questions. I sought frequency over just attending. I deem frequency as at least 2 times a month as opposed to two to three times a year indicated by other statistical research.)
· 20.5% of Americans "frequently" attended church in 1995
· 19% of Americans "frequently" attended church in 1999
· 18.0% of Americans "frequently" attended in church in 2002
Now, by extrapolating the data and doing some statistical evaluation and adding some hope for revival, we can see the figures drop to 15% of Americans in attendance at a church by 2025, and a further drop to 11% or 12 % in 2050. Soon, we can catch up with Europe, which is currently "enjoying" two to four percent of its population in regular Church attendance. By the time these predictions come to pass, Europe may have no significant Church presence at all.
Now, I can gladly say many churches and denominational groups are growing such as the Calvary Chapel, Assemblies of God, and other Evangelical churches; even the one I pastor is growing. Nevertheless, we see a major problem here. What we hear as responses from most of our church leaders are the excuses of "cultural decay" and "changing values" and that "the average American views the church with little regard." These are authentic factors, but they are just symptoms. The bigger question seems to be what led up to these "symptoms?" What led to the problems of cultural decay and the downgrading of moral absolutes? There is more to it than changing values; after all, a change in values has a root cause. A symptom is usually caused by a systemic disease or an explicit psychological problem.

I'm not so sure of a marked decline. As others mention, the NYT could be like History Channel Christianity, and how many are being driven more firmly into the arms of truth? There are issues these days having a separating effect, like gay "marriage," the Middle East, ecumenical efforts with Islam and cults: let's all have one whore religion. People are standing on or rejecting the faith of scripture. The faithful and the unfaithful are more isolated, and I believe there have always been the faithful and unfaithful in churches, only some lines drawn anymore that show those without a Holy Spirit compass and easily set adrift, as opposed to those who stand on, stand in, the faith.

In other words, the people who walk away were never really in the room. The issue has always been born again of the Spirit, or not, and it's not a new issue. It seems, in our times, more than times past, the divisions are more evident, more stark, but there was always false prosperity gospel, the big cults or whatever, as long as I've lived. And it's all in the Bible, one example,

Matthew 25:1-13
Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

And they are making judgments about Christians falling away from their faith based on who is going to church? Really?
Where is the truth in this?

And what is their idea of church? A building on Sunday morning?

Oh, don't get me started....I'm not good at more than 3 paragraphs at a time.

I read this article, and what it says is that people who were NOMINALLY Christian are not longer pretending to be Christian.

I think that is a great idea. Let only believers and followers of Jesus be called Christians. And by their love we shall know them!

71% of American adults were Christians in 2014? Ppfft yeah right. What? Was it those people who say they are catholic because they were baptized at birth and raised catholic but not actually practicing?

Bravo! Couldn't agree more, in the church, of the politicians: let's get it all on the table. Let's see the masks fall off. The more truth, the more pretenses and voluminous deceptions down the drain, that's just alright with me. Maybe it's fanatical, but I'm an iconoclast for truth. "Marry" some homosexuals in the White House, then. I like it when you can see who's who. It's the way things should be, for all God's children.

I will throw one out here. I believe God is going to more successful than not. We do have some numbers to go by. 2/3rds of the angels were saved(I believe all the angels fell 2/3rds freely chose God) based upon His character and nature, salvation for the angels was similar to ours. One fell, all fell.

And we can't go by what people say. If anyone had a moment of clarity and believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, they are saved.

I will get beat up for this. But I believe there are more Christians(faith alone in Christ alone) in the bars, because religion posing as Christianity pushed em to drinking and leaving the "church."

I believe many babes in Christ are out there and we have no clue. They never found their right pastor teacher and had religion pushed upon them and they said to heck with it. And here we sit and have no idea who truly is born again.

“Sign of the Times” not the "New York Times"

(Matthew 24:7-14)
7 “For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. 8 All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress.
9 “Then people will hand you over to tribulation and will kill you, and you will be hated by all the nations on account of my name. 10 Then, too, many will be stumbled and will betray one another and will hate one another. 11 Many false prophets will arise and mislead many; 12 and because of the increasing of lawlessness, the love of the greater number will grow cold. 13 But the one who has endured to the end will be saved. 14 And this good news of the Kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

You are very correct many true believers have left man-made churches and religion for many reasons. I know many believers who have home worship or studying with other believers. Many new believers did not received love, compassion, mentor, Bible Studying, and kindness. Some did not meet the country club religion qualifications to be part of the membership. Jesus spoke about religious folks shutting out the oppress, lost, sinners, brokenhearted, and drunkards.

Holman Christian Standard Bible
When Jesus heard this, He told them, "Those who are well don't need a doctor, but the sick do need one. I didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners."

International Standard Version
When Jesus heard that, he told them, "Healthy people don't need a physician, but sick ones do. I did not come to call righteous people, but sinners."

NET Bible
When Jesus heard this he said to them, "Those who are healthy don't need a physician, but those who are sick do. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

In some churches a person must give big money to be part of a church because big tithers rule the roost!

There's no doubt there are those saved who'd surprise some people, and the Bible does teach a Christian who's saved, but whose works burn up, even sins that lead to the deaths of Christians. On the other hand, we have to keep in mind the way is straight and narrow, not wide, and there are not many, but few who find it. This has always given me pause, of this concept of easy believism, a head only or lip service faith, whether touching the TV set for Billy Graham is enough? Then there's the question: if they're born again, where is the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit? Is the Holy Spirit a failure with some? I'd say no.

That is exactly the verse I had in mind. We are a bunch of "fruit inspectors" anymore. And there is no fruit involved is getting born again. We chose and SHOULD(not WILL) produce fruit after we are born again.

And I would say that 90 to 99% of that fruit is mental attitude and right thinking. Men can't "see" this fruit. But God can.
