It struck me we often think that we can know God at a very personal level, different from knowing another individual.

Look at the deciples. They were walking with Jesus, seeing him perform miracles, teach, raise the dead, yet they still found it hard to call him the Christ, God come to earth.

Peter was one of the closest to Jesus, yet he still got it wrong, got too involved, was rebuked, sulked, denied Jesus and then was called back.

The way some talk its like they know God like a servant, as if they dictate the Lords will, command where he moves or does not, yet when it all goes wrong denies the failure, it was people just experimenting with prophecy or spiritual authority, it is important to give it a try. Prophets who spoke from the Lord but did not, were killed.

The reality is knowing God is more than just the four spiritual laws and preaching on sundays, or claiming you can fly, when all you can do is make false claims infront of a lot for impressionable people who want to believe they are special and can do the impossible also.

Jesus gave us parables of God being the farmer who stays away, who gives us the opportunity to run things well and take responsibility, to turn what we have been given into something better.

But doing the impossible, being open and honest, fighting for purity, righteousness and love is what it is all about, helping those in need as Jesus reaches out to us, we reach out to them.

Jesus says to those who claim by healing, casting out demons they know Jesus but he says, I never knew you you evil doers. What greater call on this approach to life and the eternal.

The disciples and Peter did not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit until Pentacost. At which time, they knew an intimacy beyond their expectations. They received His words, His guidance, His revelations, and filled with the experience of His love.

As we all do who have surrendered ourselves to Him to be filled with His Spirit.

I humbly can say that I feel closer to Him than I do my own husband, mother or friends. He is the One Who has caused this to happen. I really feel that I live and move and have my being in Him.

He wants people to know and experience Him - and we don't have to "work" our way into this type of relationship. It is a gift given by His Spirit to those who surrender, expect and believe.

(John 15:11-16) 11 “These things I have spoken to you, so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be made full. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another just as I have loved you. 13 No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his life in behalf of his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I am commanding you. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master does. But I have called you friends, because I have made known to you all the things I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you, and I appointed you to go and keep bearing fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that no matter what you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

There is friendship and there is friendship!!!!

Knowing Jesus is a gift that the Holy Spirit bestows on those who come to Jesus in faith.

It is not something we need to work at but it is something we can resist or suppress.

when we are self willed and resist the leading of the Holy Spirit within us; we loose many blessings and the joy of our Salvation; but NEVER Salvation, Himself. (Remember Salvation is a translation of Jesus' name.)

That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
(Eph 3:16-19)

Eph 3:16-19 16 May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality].
17 May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love,
18 That you may have the power and be strong to apprehend and grasp with all the saints [God's devoted people, the experience of that love] what is the breadth and length and height and depth [of it];
19 [That you may really come] to know [practically, through experience for yourselves] the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge [without experience]; that you may be filled [through all your being] unto all the fullness of God [may have the richest measure of the divine Presence, and become a body wholly filled and flooded with God Himself]! Well, it's not instant oatmeal :)

Draw closer to Him and He will draw closer to you. God has revealed Himself to all men. Knowing Jesus isn't difficult in my opinion. He opens us up to Him, fills us with Himself, and keeps us safely in His loving arms.

Knowing Him is wonderful.

Though I agree with you, I also look at the church, people who appear to have the same faith as me, but talk about Jesus and spirituality very differently. I therefore conclude it is more than just the Holy Spirit talking, it is also what they understand what Jesus is.

I asked someone who ministers, about how they think Jesus feels about them. "I think Jesus loves me."
From my point of view, just saying this after years of faith and ministry, walking in the "gifts", it is a lot more fundemental than just the Holy Spirit dwelling in your heart.
I have had people on CC talk as if love as an emphasis is a victorian idea of faith.

Some have fallen into heresy, and not realised the consequences emotionally of walking in love, which is walking in the light, in purity, in righteousness. Ananias and Saphra knew the Lord and still they lied.
Jesus talks about being worthy of him. It is just too easy to discount the maturity and commitment a good relationship needs. In a marriage is the first few years of euphoria bring you through 40+ years of being together? I know it does not, but you appear to be claiming it is that simple. Look at the church, again it is about staying faithful.
