In Mark 9:43-48 we read “And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:[SUP]44 [/SUP]Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.[SUP]45[/SUP]And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:[SUP]46 [/SUP]Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.[SUP]47 [/SUP]And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:[SUP]48 [/SUP]Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”
Their worm that does not die is sin. Jesus said in John 8:24 “I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
So the removal of sin is necessary so we do not die in our sins. And that is where Jesus came in for us, who also was made to be sin for us. 2 Corinthians 5:21 “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
Which is also why I believe Jesus is shown as a worm in Psalm 22:6 “But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.”
Psalm 69:9 “For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.”
Our old sinful man is to be crucified with Jesus, thus destroying the body of sin. Romans 6:6 “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”
Sin is shown as red, or crimson.
