1Jo 4:17 ¶ Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.

I believe the Lord is and has been speaking to me, the real need for me to remove all fear from my life. I thought I would use this thread as an expression of the scriptures and truths, that give us power over our fears.

Ps 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah.

I hope to have this faith one day, that even if the very earth dissolved around me, I could stand in confidence apart from fear and know that He is God! :)

I don't like to fly. At all.

So when I am in the airplane, I pray. Constantly.

All things work for the good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose. This makes me feel calm and peace for a few minutes. And then we hit turbulence...

And I pray some more.

How come I can't stay in this peace? How come I have to continually remind myself of God and His Goodness and Mercy?

Because I don't know how to look to Christ as the "sea rages". I have to remember, after I have failed, to look to Him.

I suppose it will be the same on the day of judgement. I will have that "oh no, i'm dead meat" moment, and then I will remember to look to Christ and call on my Saviour.

It seems dumb because I already know where my help is. But my reactions don't naturally reflect this. My reactions are mostly wrong and embarassing. Thank God for the Lord Jesus Christ...

Unless we have utterly submitted to the will of God over what happens to us, that it will be to His glory alone, we will react when the waves come over us. It is when we thank Him for the bad as well as for the good, that we know self interest has been put to death. Having one foot in the world will never bring abiding peace.

These things help me overcome fear (which will always be a part of our flesh):

1. To meditate on how perfect - personal - deep - passionate is His love for me. That He has my back! He has my future!

2 To write down what I fear and then ask the Lord to give me His perspective on them. As I pray and listen, I write down the thoughts I get. They are always exactly what I need to hear and mostly not what I would have thought. But the fear is gone.

(Now I know that I could find scriptures in the bible to talk about fear, but there is nothing like having personal words from the Lord that come from prayer.)

I love fear. Because when I fear I recognize my weakness. And in recognizing my weakness, I see Christ who is my strength.

And yet, most "Christian's" perspective and understanding of God and the Bible is not just based in fearing, but deeply steeped in it.

While the main thing Jesus impressed upon us was that we were NOT to fear.

for us, reverential fear for One so mighty and beyond our simple comprehension
is something that we will never be ashamed of and we know that it will always
be a part of our relationship with Him.

You know Gandpa...I still get a little nervous when I fly...and recently the Lord blessed me with a super-fast street-bike...I get nervous everytime I get on it Hehe ....but when I get going and think about how the Lord has blessed and kept me from harm...the nerves kinda go away and I begin to enjoy myself. I believe in reverential (godly) fear, but all earthly fear, I would like to overcome by the truth of Gods Word... :)

Pr 28:1 ¶ The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Re 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Not trying to condemn anyone here, but I think its interesting and important to see how God views "fear"..."fear" is a sin just as these other sins that warrant punishment in the lake of fire.

Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

It's not dumb at all, its simply being human, and God understands.

Besides, there's something about being in a tube seven miles above Earth that stinks. :)

Mt 6:25 ¶ Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Its the little foxes that spoil the vine of our peace. I know for myself that I often catch myself being anxious about the cares and concerns of this world, which seems to take from the simple faith I know that allows the peace of God to rule my heart.
Surly the enemy is seeking to cause us all to worry and steal our joy and peace that Christ has given to us.

Hello Mitspa,

Yes, it is the cares of this life, which are varied and many, and deceitful by nature: which take away our peace and our joy in believing, thereby rendering us weak and defenceless in the face of trial; unable to show forth the grace and love of God or a positive witness to the surety of our position in Christ.

How important it is, therefore to keep our eyes stayed on Christ, and on what God has promised us, in Christ Jesus: concerning the surety of our position in Him; and not give place to the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes, and the pride of life, which are the enemies tools, that he uses to quicken into life the old man: and make war against the the spirit (the new man) within; bringing conflict and destroying not only our peace, but our witness.

Our position in Christ is one of such strength and power: for we are standing on the promises of God; which are unshakable. We are to lay hold on these promises by faith, and stand, in this day; clothed in the armour that He has provided, and praising God in all circumstances. Then it is that the peace of God which passes all understanding will keep our hearts and minds in the love of God, and our witness will be one of joy unspeakable and full of glory.

Praise His Name!

In Christ Jesus
Chris

if perfect love casts out fear... then why am i still so afraid?

does our Lord understand that, given how much He reassures us and speaks of fear to us? i think so.

we are perfectly loved, but sometimes that verse causes us to take an attitude toward others that looks like:

suck it up! pull it together! you shouldn't be afraid! you're not doing this right!
(see where the focus is in each of those statements? :()

i thank God in Christ for new mercies each morning, and for teaching me more each day how much He loves me. i thank Him for the Lord Jesus, and that He teaches me to fix my eyes on Himself.

it's only there i find peace and freedom from fear.

Mitspa, I thought Spurgeon was talking to me today. He was, but it also sounds like he was talking to you. Here's today's evening devotion about trusting God, (which is the opposite of living in fear.)

....
is this a real question or one that doesn't expect or doesn't want to be answered ?
the simple answer in truth (GOD'S WORD) is gentle and perfect and
unchanged since Jesus talked with His disciples on earth.... and
since the Creator walked in the garden with adam and havah and talked with them then.

same answer.

Thanks cost....often the Lord speaks to me through Spurgeon and this devotion is a blessing.. but I have not read him in a while. I dare to say if the Lord is speaking to His people at this time, His Words are "Fear Not"....:)
