Odd question I know!

Someone raised this the other day and it got me
scratching my head for evidence (don't have head lice honest).
They had this image of God and the person of Jesus as strict,
serious, full of doom and gloom, the end is nigh etc.
I also know some Christians just like this! In fact the person
who raised the question is a bit like this they seem to think
it is a sin to laugh and Christians should not be so frivolous.

I must admit I'm the opposite, although maybe there are times
I should be more serious. I suppose I use laughter to rise above
difficult situations.

I think God must have a sense of humour as we are made in His image.
He created us in such a way that we can experience a full range of
emotions. The bible mentions the joy of the Lord and delight.

For Jesus to come out with the following verses, makes me think that he
must have had a sense of humour of sorts, even if it is just irony.

Luke 6:41 NKJV
[41] And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not
perceive the plank in your own eye?

I am not aware though of any verses which refer to Jesus laughing, (although
that's not to say he didn't). Just wondered what you thought on this. Do you
know of any? Or do you think Jesus was serious all the time?

There are several versus in the bible which refer to God laughing in a scornful way,
though this is usually connected to the enemy, wicked etc.

Psalm 37:12-14 NKJV
[12] The wicked plots against the just, And gnashes at him with his teeth.
[13] The Lord laughs at him, For He sees that his day is coming. [14] The
wicked have drawn the sword And have bent their bow, To cast down the
poor and needy, To slay those who are of upright conduct.

Maybe the English language just doesn't do justice to the word laughter.

Thats exactly what I thought, but there seems to be so many joyless
Christians around.

Obviously you would not expect someone going through the difficult times
or in mourning, to be laughing out loud, but the way this person thinks
and also some others I have met, is that laughter is almost a sin and anything
to do with God should be approached with a sombre attitude.

Thats not to say that there aren't times when we need to be serious.

This person is just such a joyless Christian and they use the excuse that Jesus
was always serious, for anything which involves the bible, church etc.

Sigh....

I like to think God has a sense of humour. I don't think I have any proof, but I like to think so. I mean, personality comes from God yeah?

imagine you are threshing grain at the bottom of a hill, instead of at the top where there is wind (which would make sense for threshing), because you are terrified some Philistines might see you and take your grain away. you are nervous, hot & sweaty from the work, and the chaff is all sticking to you because the wind isn't blowing it away (like it would be if you were using the actual threshing floor at the top of the hill) . .

then an angel appears and says
The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor!

I believe it was said that there is joy in Christ correct? true there are many hard times Jesus told us that this was not going to be the land of milk and cookies but a heart that truly is in love with God and truly is on fire for him and adores him has joy in him even in the hard times,if a Christian is down like that and stays like that maybe he needs to seek God's heart again

The following are a few good examples - lets dispel the myth that
Christians are misery guts :D (although it might be challenging on CC).

Genesis 21:5-6 NKJV
[5] Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
[6] And Sarah said, "God has made me laugh, and all who hear will laugh with me."

Psalm 126:5 NKJV
[5] Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy.

Ecclesiastes 3:4 NKJV
[4] A time to weep, And a time to laugh;A time to mourn, And a time to dance;

I would say God does have a sense of humour, look at these texts.

1 Kings 18:26-27 KJV
(26) And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.
(27) And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

Naa that can't be in the bible, your pulling my leg - I thought.
but yep it's there Prov 27 v 14

The amplified says the following, not sure which version is correct. The king
James is funnier though!

Proverbs 27:14 AMP
[14] The flatterer who loudly praises and glorifies his neighbor,
rising early in the morning, it shall be counted as cursing him for
he will be suspected of sinister purposes.

I'm feeling better already, I woke up a right grumpy grouch this morning, it was
way too hot to sleep last night.

I'm trading my sorrow
I'm trading my shame
I'm laying it down for the joy of the Lord

I'm trading my sickness
I'm trading my pain
I'm laying it down for the joy of the Lord

Chorus:
And we say yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord
Yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord
Yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord Amen

I'm pressed but not crushed persecuted not abandoned
Struck down but not destroyed
I'm blessed beyond the curse for his promise will endure
And his joy's gonna be my strength

Though the sorrow may last for the night
His joy comes with the morning

Sorry didn't mean to turn this into a chick flick, men please
feel free to continue to contribute, :) sometimes the worship has
just got to come out.

Jesus used puns, which was a common humour device in his day.

It is hard to find them in the Greek, but if you translate them into Aramaic, they start to make sense.

One example would be calling Peter "Petros" the small rock, while Jesus called himself "Petra" the solid rock or foundation. This is a text that the RCC has confused.

There are many of these puns, but I can't remember which book I have that they are in. But suffice to say, that translating Jesus words into Aramaic does bring out the witty and sardonical nature of Jesus' humour!
