Me. For about 30 years. Even had a total change in the style and sound of the language about 4 years ago, following an encounter where I felt I actually met Jesus.

It had NOTHING, at all, to do with receiving The Holy Spirit, and came several years after being baptized.

Speaking in tongues is merely a minor gift. It is not proof of salvation, nor sanctification. Get over that one, since you seem to be out to make anyone who can't out to not be a believer.

There are many on this forum who are filled with the Spirit who do not pray in tongues. And there are also many who are filled with the Spirit and do.

John, do you pick up snakes and drink poison too?

Even though I pray in a language not my own (of the Spirit), I do not have the gift of speaking to the church in a tongue bringing a message from God to them.

I just hope you do not make judgments as to who is filled with the Spirit based on this one thing. We are to recognize them by the fruits of their actions and talk: love, joy, peace, etc.

I've been a Christian for as long as I can remember. I became more invested in my faith in my early teens (owned it, if you will). But it's only in the last 6 or so months that I've been able to speak in tongues. I would love for it to be a bit more developed (to my ear) but I'll take what I've been given. :)

<-- spirit filled for almost 45 years. Never spoke a language I did not know..and have no desire to unless God needs me to give the gospel to someone who does not speak my language, and there is no other way.

Thank you! Many people misuse this gift and act superior. But many genuine Christians have experienced this gift and should not be lumped in with those who abuse the gift.

Would be interested to see explanations for this difference in experience from others...

PLEASE NOTE: please just give your explanation (using Scripture to support it) and NO bickering/slagging off other explanation!

Thanks

Whether I am spirit filled or not is not important although if I am then God gets the credit. speaking in tongues is often times misused and misunderstood, it's easy to pretend to have such a gift many ppl do they talk gibberish that sounds angelic but does not affect the ppls spirits. I do not believe one can have such a gift without the holy spirit himself giving it to them, it can be imitated but the results of true tongues will speak for itself.

But it is not a requirement for salvation at all, different believers have different gifts.

"Merely a minor gift"? All 9 spiritual gifts mentioned in 1 Corinthians chapt 12 are not actually minor anything. Just to possess a single spiritual gift (some have several) is an awesome tool that can bring millions to CHRIST if utilized. Nothing is merely minor when backed up by the Holy Spirit. You may have powerful faith, or discernment, or able to translate a 'tongue' message..but it does not make you 2nd string to sit on a bench for the rest of your life. Take any of the gifts and run with it!!!!!!! Use it wisely and only for HIS glory. People can reach others more successfully than many evangelists if they use those so called "minor' gifts on a steady basis. Any true Christian that is holy spirit filled does possess a certain GOD-given gift. Signs and wonders always follow where the Holy Spirit leads. Some do speak in tongues as the spirit so leads, but personally, I would rather have the gift of prophecy or healing (and this has happened) but I am an open vessel, so GOD can use me like HE wants to..with no apology needed.

Why not the 'tongues' spoken, in any languages of this earth, and 'tongues' spoken of Heavenly, with 'interpretation', be the 'Gospel' of the New Covenant/Testament/Agreement, 'as it is written' and 'taught' by the 'HOLY SPIRIT' for CHRIST in us, who say we 'believe' and have 'faith'.

Where are 'these faith action in 'witnessing' and 'right standing with GOD', honoring CHRIST, to this 'perishing world' and the 'Church of GOD', consist of HIS listening and paying attention 'lambs and sheep' to HIS 'every word that proceeded out of HIS mouth' through 'CHRIST of the New Covenant/Testament/Agreement', in 'practice' and 'abide' and 'bear much fruit' and 'their fruit must also abide'?

Please all of you who 'believe' CHRIST and by the 'Help' of the HOLY SPIRIT, 'perceive', 1 Corinthians chapter 12, to chapter 14, about the 'witnessing', and how the 'gifts' of the HOLY SPIRIT placed in us, and how the Holt Scripture teaches us in 'submission' and 'obedience' to us them as a 'Church' in 'Kingdom order' and not our 'own self', and 'period'.

Please 'stop' making CHRIST's FATHER's house a 'marketplace', where 'robbers' and 'thieves' hide, ignorant to all that is 'written' as our 'Covenant/Testament/Agreement'.

GOD bless you all in the name of LORD JESUS CHRIST.

What is the gift of speaking in tongues?

Subscribe to our Question of the Week:

gift speaking tongues
Question: "What is the gift of speaking in tongues?"

Answer: The first occurrence of speaking in tongues occurred on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The apostles went out and shared the gospel with the crowds, speaking to them in their own languages: “We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (Acts 2:11). The Greek word translated tongues literally means “languages.” Therefore, the gift of tongues is speaking in a language a person does not know in order to minister to someone who does speak that language. In 1 Corinthians chapters 12–14, Paul discusses miraculous gifts, saying, “Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?” (1 Corinthians 14:6). According to the apostle Paul, and in agreement with the tongues described in Acts, speaking in tongues is valuable to the one hearing God’s message in his or her own language, but it is useless to everyone else unless it is interpreted/translated.

A person with the gift of interpreting tongues (1 Corinthians 12:30) could understand what a tongues-speaker was saying even though he did not know the language that was being spoken. The tongues interpreter would then communicate the message of the tongues speaker to everyone else, so all could understand. “For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says” (1 Corinthians 14:13). Paul’s conclusion regarding tongues that were not interpreted is powerful: “But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue” (1 Corinthians 14:19).

Is the gift of tongues for today? First Corinthians 13:8 mentions the gift of tongues ceasing, although it connects the ceasing with the arrival of the “perfect” in 1 Corinthians 13:10. Some point to a difference in the tense of the Greek verbs referring to prophecy and knowledge “ceasing” and that of tongues “being ceased” as evidence for tongues ceasing before the arrival of the “perfect.” While possible, this is not explicitly clear from the text. Some also point to passages such as Isaiah 28:11 and Joel 2:28-29 as evidence that speaking in tongues was a sign of God's oncoming judgment. First Corinthians 14:22 describes tongues as a “sign to unbelievers.” According to this argument, the gift of tongues was a warning to the Jews that God was going to judge Israel for rejecting Jesus Christ as Messiah. Therefore, when God did in fact judge Israel (with the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in A.D. 70), the gift of tongues would no longer serve its intended purpose. While this view is possible, the primary purpose of tongues being fulfilled does not necessarily demand its cessation. Scripture does not conclusively assert that the gift of speaking in tongues has ceased.

At the same time, if the gift of speaking in tongues were active in the church today, it would be performed in agreement with Scripture. It would be a real and intelligible language (1 Corinthians 14:10). It would be for the purpose of communicating God's Word with a person of another language (Acts 2:6-12). It would be in agreement with the command God gave through the apostle Paul, “If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God” (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). It would also be in accordance with 1 Corinthians 14:33, “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.”

God most definitely can give a person the gift of speaking in tongues to enable him or her to communicate with a person who speaks another language. The Holy Spirit is sovereign in the dispersion of the spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12:11). The vast majority of believers who claim to practice the gift of speaking in tongues do not do so in agreement with the Scriptures mentioned above.

I've picked up snakes. And I've swallowed poison.

(Granted the snakes weren't poisonous, and I didn't know Russian Sage was poison until we had it on pizza a few times, so not saying I'm the brightest bulb in the box.)

Am I cool now, since I don't speak in tongues but have done the others?

Just kidding around. lol

Hi John,
I have come across a few bad teachings in my time since being born again. Some seem to think you are only baptized in the Spirit at the same time as water baptism, but that can't be the case. Some who don't have the gift of tongues get all upset at people who do, and want to slap them down. I wonder why.

Some say that tongues and healings and prophecy is not for today, as though God changed His mind. Some want to put tongues down as the least of the gifts, not understanding that all the gifts of God are awesome...and surely we need all the help we can get. Why refuse?

Some want to judge tongues as jibberish...I think that is a dangerous place to be, and likely to quench the Holy Spirit so that people don't have the courage to speak out what God is freely offering.

What happened to me is in accord with scriptures. I was born again because I believed Jesus died for my sin and I asked Him to be Lord of my life, changing me and making me new. It was real and sincere and so the Lord did exactly that. I didn't understand it all in the beginning, no one does, but by and by He showed me there was more that he wanted to give me.

I was baptized in the Holy Spirit after conversion, but before water baptism, which came a couple of years later, when I found a few real believers, as opposed to those who just have that religious thing that seems to want to make everyone else the bad guy.

Some time later again I received a gift of tongues. Paul speaks of diverse tongues so we know it isn't just one gift, boxed, if you know what I mean.

Time and time again I have found myself alone with Jesus asking Him to show me what He wants me to see, and to give me what He wants me to have. Inevitably He will comfort me with scripture lighting up like a beacon, or will lead another to speak the words of comfort/encouragement that I need to hear.

If people are told that they are born again because they got baptized in water, that is a problem surely. Even people who are unbelievers can get dunked in a pool. As you rightly quote, these signs shall follow them that believe. So of the faith is real, the signs follow, including tongues, and all wonderful things that accompany salvation.

God bless you!!!

Praise God. Thank you for the topic :)

Seeking After Signs
Jesus said in Mark 16:17-18: "These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."

Some people have taken these verses as a requirement, as if it were a commission that Christians ought to try to fulfill to prove their authenticity. Some groups attempt to pick up poisonous snakes without being harmed. The handlers usually avoid being bitten, but sometimes they are bitten and die. The success rate does not matter. What is important is whether God wants his people to be doing this.

Should God's people do dangerous things so God will rescue them with a miracle for all to see that God approves of them? Are miracles necessary to prove that Christianity is right?

Faith does not come from seeing miracles. The Israelites who crossed the Red Sea saw numerous miracles, but they did not have the faith to obey God. And many Christians have believed without seeing anything dramatic. Faith comes when God allows someone to believe the gospel (Romans 10:13-14; John 6:44). The primary miracle is in the heart and mind, not necessarily anything that can be seen.

Moreover, God does not want us to do dangerous things in order to prompt his intervention. Satan tempted Jesus with such a challenge, and Jesus answered, "Do not put the Lord your God to the test" (Matthew 4:5-7). We should not try to force God to do anything. Such conduct shows a lack of faith.

The scripture in Mark 16 is a prediction, not a command. It simply says that some Christians would experience these miracles; it is not a promise to protect all Christians, or to heal all, or that all would speak in tongues, or that all would cast out demons. It indicates that various miracles would happen; it does not say how often they would happen.

Miracles still occur today — healing, for example. Demons have been cast out. Christians have been miraculously spared from accidents. But others have died in faith.

The real proof of Christianity is not miracles. It is the love of God, the fruit of the Spirit of Christ in us, motivating us to love one another and to love and obey God (Romans 5:5; Galatians 5:22; John 13:34-35; Romans 8:14; Acts 5:32).

Interpretation and Order
Paul used part of his letter to tell the Corinthian Christians how to use the gift of tongues. It seems that it was their regular custom to speak in tongues. But tongues had become a problem — enough of a problem for the Corinthians to ask Paul's advice about the situation.

For the specific circumstances at Corinth, Paul advised tongue-speakers to pray for the gift of interpretation (verse 13); it is only through interpretation that others could learn something from the sounds (verse 5).

"If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church" (verse 28). This implies that the speakers were able to control themselves. They had to be silent unless someone known to have the gift of interpretation was also there. They should speak in an orderly way. They should not disrupt services but contribute to them. Paul explained, "For God is not a God of disorder but of peace" (verse 33). When spiritual gifts are being used, there is no excuse for confusion. If there is chaos, the people are not allowing God to work in them in the way he wants.

Paul stressed that worship services "should be done in a fitting and orderly way" (verse 40). Apparently the Corinthian meetings had been disorderly, with many people speaking at the same time. "If the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?" (verse 23).

In contrast, Paul says, if some outsiders hear inspired speaking and teaching, they may worship God (verses 24-25).

So Paul gave the Corinthians some simple rules for improving the organization of their worship meetings. People could come prepared to participate in various ways, according to their gifts or abilities. The primary rule, based on the way of love, was that "all of these must be done for the strengthening of the church" (verse 26).

Only one person should speak at a time, and there should be only two or three speaking in tongues in any one meeting (verse 27). (This rule applied to prophets, too.) If anyone speaks in a tongue, someone must interpret. If no one could explain the message, the tongue-speaker had to be quiet (verse 28).

Paul forcefully corrected the Corinthians on some of their problems, but on the topic of tongues he was gentle. He did not want the correction to cause more division than the problem had caused. "Do not forbid speaking in tongues. But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way" (verses 39-40).

Grace international

-------

Very few people speak in tongues today and it tends to be in a missionary context: a english missionary somehow speaking russian when preaching to russians, an asian believer speaking a different asian language to spread the message of repentance and forgiveness of sins, etc.

What the modern name it-claim it, word of faith, and other charismatic false prophets participate in is not a sign of the Holy Spirit, as the Holy Spirit would not contradict God's word as so many charismatics do, even in their supposed tongues. I know people who have spoken in tongues and they did it in a context as seen in Acts 2 and it was in order to edify a believer or preach the gospel, not as a random, every sunday insanity and disordered mess.

While many of you may think you speak in heavenly languages, through the power if the Holy Spirit, im sorry to tell you, but you aren't. If every person who claimed to speak the language of the angels actually did so, than none of them are actually saying the same words let alone gospel message as everyone's "Holy Spirit" tongues are completely different. More than that, the tongues spoken by so many charismatics are contradictory to scripture, disorderly, and do not edify showing further they are not channeling the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps they are channeling a spirit, but it is not the Holy Spirit.

The ones that bother me are those who think if you don't have the gift of tongues, you aren't born again. I wasted 6 years of being a believer thinking I wasn't because I couldn't speak in tongues. Ends up, I can't teach either, which is a bigger problem but rarely addressed in the same depth.

The all-about-tongues people who give all kinds of lessons on tongues when that's not the subject are simply like a mosquito bite. May bother me for a little while, but it goes away quickly enough.
