If you look the word up and all the places that it is used you will see that it encompasses far more than the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.......Such as.....

Revelation chapter 14 verses 6 and 7

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

when Jesus sent out the 12 he instructed them to teach the gospel, is this the same as the everlasting gospel?
His exact words of instruction are "proclaim the kingdom of God" is this the same as the gospel?

For our purposes as the Church. ..

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (KJV)
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

There are other Gospels but the one above is the one in which Paul states we are saved.

Well, really, all He ever preached was the kingdom of God..."at hand", "coming", "near", etc.

The Gospel of Christ is that he died for our sins and on the third day rose. The teachings of Christ are teachings we must follow but the true meaning of the Gospel is that Jesus died for our sins and rose from the grave. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 is the Gospel of Christ..the good news! And this is truth as stated in 1 Cor 15:3 "according to the Scriptures".

thanks willy, yeah i agree. this is kinda the point of the thread, to help me with my own understanding. i always heard growing up "the gospels" were the books of Matthiew, mark, Luke and John. those books are the teachings of Jesus.

Yes. The gospel is to proclaim the kingdom of God, the new creation (entrance of man into the Life).

These are good news for people with questions, for people frustrated with the absurd of this life (a life which leads you invariably to death).
For those preoccupied only with their own survival and with the satisfaction of their instincts, the gospel doesn't mean much. For some of them, the gospel is even a source of fear and threat for their deadly comfort and for their indifference towards life and people.

Interestingly, Jesus didn't go around teaching about His death, burial, and resurrection.

The many people who turned to Him in His lifetime here didn't come to Him because He told them He was going to die, and then come back..... He only mentioned that to a few of His closest disciples. And as the Emmaus Road story tells us, even they didn't REALLY have a handle on THAT kind of wild notion. Just something to think about.

Even more interesting, Jesus Christ show Himself in the morning of the Resurrection to the women, and when the women told the apostles, they did not believe them and thought they were talking nonsense (Luke 24, 11).

On the contrary, He said in one occasion that people were so wicked and adulterous that not even the resurrection of a man could move their heart. He also told the Pharisees and Sadducees (who required signs from heaven regarding His divine authority) that they will be given the sign of Jonah (which is a symbolic way of talking about His own resurrection).

The Gospel is from Gen. to Rev. the story of the fall of man and all his struggles and triumphs and failures are revealed in striking unbiased clarity, the Almighty in His awesome power and mercy shows mankind terrible judgments and amazing grace, His love is revealed in every tear, trial and victory, His mercy is given in abundance to benefit the Human family, His Judgments are righteous and His ways are true, He is acquainted with our Sorrows and our needs and longs for our restoration and relationship with Him, He gave us the greatest gift EVER given in the person of his Son and our beloved Savior, He suffered and died for our sins that we may be restored and redeemed to be as we were created to be, he leads us in the way.... if we will follow, the words he has chosen to reveal to us, is alive and can surely quicken and rejuvenate the darkest of souls and will lead those who seek Him to the place of deliverance and redemption, (2tim. 3:16) the words spoken by the prophets reproved kings and changed the course of history, His word reveals the beginning to the end, and his Spirit will guide and lead all who desire it to the truth as revealed there, I am blessed and humbled when I stand in awe of His awesome love revealed there.
so be at peace, pray for understanding and guidance and fear Him only and greater things will be revealed to the soul who seeks them.

Uh.... read Judges 3:21 and a few verses following. THAT's the Gospel? No, I don't think Jesus meant to go preaching stuff like that.

"Now brothers, I want to clarify for you the gospel I proclaimed to you; you received it and have taken your standon it. You are also saved by it, if you hold to the message I proclaimed to you—unless you believed for no purpose.For I passed on to youas most important what I also received:
1) that Christ diedfor our sins, according to the Scriptures,
2) that He was buried,
3) that He was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures... "(1 Cor 15:1-4)

so the gospel is - salvation through Jesus
the gospels - are Matthiew, mark, Luke and John. or the teachings of Jesus.
and the 12 were sent out to proclaim the kingdom or kingdom is near

i never thought about it but always just assumed all three were the same. they are not the same. connected but not the same. i always thought the 12 were sent out to spread the teachings of Jesus.
so what exactly was the purpose of the 12? proclaim the kingdom, what exactly does that mean? heaven is near?

Matthew Mark, Luke and John are called the Gospels because they are essentially the accounts of Christ's coming (virgin birth), living according to the law, dying , buried, Rising from the dead and ascending into heaven. The Epistles do the explaining of those actions and what they mean for us.

Hmmmm... Is this a trick question?... One of those, separating the wheat from the chaff, kinda' things?... All kidding aside, it is a loaded one!... But hear it goes... In short, “the Gospel” is the sum total of the saving truth as God has communicated it to us, revealed in the person of His Son and the Holy Scriptures, the Bible... Ta'daaaahh....
:cool:
