So my older brother has had a child and has asked me to be its God-parent...and as we grew up Lutheran that is something we held to...that it demands you look after their child in a spiritual way, plus obligates you to look after them in other even material ways...but as I am not Lutheran, and if the term was to hold its truest/deepest meaning--I told him I would olve to but wasn't there anyone 'physically' closer that could look after her more meticulously? Then, I said I would be glad to as it springs from his believe that I am 'devout' and he doesn't know who else to choose--even for a God-mother--so he suggested I could be both God-father and God mother, if I wanted....

So do you believe in God parents? What are they? I used to have a feint reasoning that if my parents died, it obligates your God parents to raise you and look after you...is this true?

Just wondering...

God bless

Obligates? Only if you take any vows or committments you make literally. I don't really know many who do.
I've had god parents, it's more of a formality really.
In reality they don't really have much to do with you and I don't think many parents care how much or little god-parents have. In fact parents probably just want to leave the spiritual guidance of their child to themselves rather than another person.

I've never heard that being the case. Though I'm not Lutheran. Whoever will raise them if the parents die will be determined by the legal system I should think, or whoever the parents chose in their "in event of death" arrangements?

IS it right to take the name God-parent as a legality?

Even more, it confuses me if I should knowing that I am strongly uncertain of the ramifications of infant/baby baptisms...

I thought about writing my God parents over the confusion I have had of them not wishing to spiritually guide me and still consider themselves nominally by 'godparents'...

Paul to some extant in all his letters seems to suggest that he was people's God father or parent due to birthing Christ in them through Christ...so I kind of think whoever brings you to Christ is your God parent...giving birth to you like Mary immaculately...

Unsure about God parents
as i have said before

yeah god parents is more or less a tradition and formality. It is associated with infant baptism. It is basically the parents (and god parents) saying we'll raise this child up in the christian faith, knowing that when they grow up they will get the opportunity to have faith in Christ for themselves. It is just like Paul being a father or parent to those he birthed..that's how I think of infant baptism.. it is the parents "birthing" the child, bringing them to Christ. In adult life a "god parent" would be a discipler, overseer or mentor.
