Me personally...the key to Revelation has many facets....
1. You must have a decent understanding of the bible over all.....
2. The word readeth in verse three chapter 1 comes from two Greek words and means to know again<--indicates studying through it several times...
3. Have a working knowledge of Daniel, Isaiah, Jeremiah and the minor prophets
4. Prayer
and buy a good Greek dictionary of New testament words and study every word in every verse......every time I have went through it I have gained more insight and a deeper knowledge....just reading it will not give you a good understanding of the book IMO.
Personally, I love reading the message tho I don't use it for any deep bible study. I read it like any other book. The message is good but I wouldn't recommend it for bible studies. Like BarlyGurl said, Its just a paraphrase, not a translation.
Many people are very afraid of things they have been told to be afraid of. The Message is one of these. (There are dozens more that will evoke a very extreme response from people.)
I feel the same way "Shotgunner" does. If people are so frightened of anything but that which bears the stamp of approval of some supposed authority they follow, then perhaps they need to look at just how strong their own beliefs really are.
To me, this is actually so much closer to what Jesus did, moved right into the very neighborhood we lived in, and grew up as one of us, living right beside us, experiencing our daily lives, than the words, "and, dwelt among us."
Maybe you should read the "How do we Despose of a Wornout Bible?" thread. Actually, I find this post obnoxious and cynical, at the very least. You don't like the NIV, the NASB, the ESV, HCSB, or other version, fine. No one cares that you are narrow-minded, archaic, and legalistic. Keep it to yourself.
There's nothing wrong with The Message if, as is repeatedly multiple times here, you're not doing an indepth study using it exclusively. But The Message really brings home the emotion and intensity of God's Word, and functions well when being read next to a solid literal translation like the NASB or KJV. When you find yourself down, fearful, anxious, etc., the passages that help you deal with those emotions really come alive in The Message.
