Obviously the differences determine the relationship. If there is a difference on core salvation beliefs then there is cause of concern. For example the deity of Christ, the sufficiency of His blood to atone for sin and stuff like that.

Things like end times and the rapture are not as important but a solid belief in salvation by grace through faith cannot be glossed over.

I can associate with just about anyone but I can have fellowship with those who are genuine Christians.

Scripture does say to have compassion on those less fortunate. Not everyone has the blessing of good bible discipleship.

If you tried to help someone that fits your criterion, what would you do if they habitually refused good counsel?

I think this was posted with good intent. Yes, I would associate with someone with whom I have doctrinal differences.

I might learn something or they might learn something or we might just agree to disagree.

I have to agree. To avoid people over differences is not what Jesus did. Did he not hang out with tax collectors, drunks, and prostitutes? I'm not saying he partook in these things, but the sick need a healer.

Humans are fallible. God is not. There is a standard to adhere to, and that is a standard that doesn't change. If 2 people sincerely want association with each other (heart to heart), both people will realize their own vulnerability of thinking. There is only one way to agree, and that is to associate on a standard that will never change.

yeah that came to mind as soon as i saw the thread title.
i mulled about it a bit.
it seems to me that Paul's talking about people that actively cause division & offence. not people that if you dig hard enough in, you'll find some reason to be offended or divided by. there might be an argument for me being the one causing offense in the latter case, if i'm launching an inquisition or witch hunt on everyone i talk to . .
but before i think i can look at answering this question, we ought to define "associate with"

let's start with something ridiculous and work our way towards something more meaningful.

would i be found on the same planet as someone with contrary beliefs? ha.
would i be found in the same country? state? city? ha.
would i be found in the same room? again, ha.
would i work for or with, or buy from, or sell to someone with a contrary belief? sure.
would i speak to someone with a contrary belief? sure.
would i listen to what someone with a contrary belief says? sure.
would i have an actual conversation with someone with a contrary belief? sure.
would i have a conversation with someone with a contrary belief that's actually about that belief? yes.
would i have more than one conversation with a person with a contrary belief? even about that belief? sure.
would i play bocce with a person with a contrary belief? sure.
would i dig a well or push a stranded car with a person with a contrary belief? sure.
would i accept a friend request on facebook from a person with a contrary belief? sure.
would i go digging through the fb wall of a person with a contrary belief, 'liking' and 'sharing' all their posts? no.
would i ignore most if not all of the fb posts of a person with a contrary belief? yep.
would i seek advice from a person with a contrary belief? no.
would i seek companionship from a person with a contrary belief? no.

but see, a person with a contrary belief is not the same as a person who stirs up division and multiplies offense. i'm not sure that Paul ((in Romans 16:17)) is talking about the same thing this thread is about. maybe that changes some of that string of answers.
i talk to all kinds of people. i even talk to trolls as if they're not trolls, mostly. maybe i'm doing things wrong.
what do you think?

What if the people in need of healing refused to be healed?

That's their choice! We plant the seeds, God produces the yield. Kind of hard to save a saint don't you think?

I can associate with anyone. I do draw a line on how close I allow them to me do to the difference in our belief. It also makes a difference on what we differ on. Some Christians have different beliefs. People have different beliefs on who is GOD and so forth. I will not associate with anyone who deals in any form of demonic cult rituals.

I will not marry anyone who is not Christian. The Bible tells us not to be unevenly yoked. It brings much confusion and where there is confusion satan is there. I know people who do not agree with my belief and I have no issue with that I know where they stand as they know where I stand. I Pray for them and lead by example...follow me as I follow CHRIST. We all have to make a conscience choice to whether we will serve GOD or not. But I will not allow the association to interfere with my lifestyle.

Blessings!!!!!!!
