Hi, wasn't too sure what title to use. What I mean is what books apart from the bible, have you read recently or not so recently that have helped you, either in your prayer life, Faith etc. hopefully we can all learn of new books etc.
(Please don't write back 'Oh, I just read my bible' we all read our bibles.

A book Im reading at the moment is called 'God on Mute' the title gives it away lol. It is about unanswered prayer, its been a great read so far, and made me think about things I had never thought about before, here's one of the points Peter greig makes in his book.

Prayer that contradicts

This is a good one. to explain it the author says imagine there is a farmer who surveys his crops and needs rain badly, yet in the same town/area there is a bride who is getting married, she;s praying for more sunshine?

another one was, and I laughed at this one as I have done it. Two football/soccer teams have a match, call them red team and blue team, some supporters are praying for the red team and others are praying fro the blue team. these are what the author call contradictory prayers Now just imagine a few million Christians praying everyday? I did laugh at the football one though.

The author is not saying not to pray for these sort of things but is guiding you to some reasons why prayer is not answered.

that was one point from the book that I had never heard before so it was an eye opener to me.

So over to you what book have you read that has helped you, even in your bible study.

Kind regards

Phil

of course the purpose driven life. Now I know there are those who focus on the negatives of this book but I absolutely received the positives and the Challenges to step out from being a "me" focused what will I do with my life to a "God" focused what would he have me do for him today & who can I assist into knowledge of him. I started listening to the spirit when I am prompted and started listening for the spirit. A year ago I was too spiritually focused so I needed grounding in the word of God now I fear I'm perhaps getting too judgemental & legalistic and need more time spent in prayer. We go through necessary phases of growth and grounding and books are definitely a help. I'm reading heaven is in the house and Experiencing God and theology of the major sects. three very different focused books. I've come to the knowlege that it is someone elses business to deal with the Jehovahs witness's as I am too personally effected by that cult (learned this from the theology book) and I could never speak to them in a way that would bring them to the Lord. So I will give them a polite no thank you & that is all rather than entering into discussion.

Although I have difficulty retaining all that I read, I have come to understand that I learn best in expeariancing what I read.
One would probably call it kinetic learning.
So the books I read ussually involve the story being told by the person's self, this way I can feel the story and retain more of what I read.
The last book I read was finished last night, Christy, a wonderful story of a young woman coming to know Jesus intimitly.
I have always loved books that are a testamony of their faith. Not because of any perfect understanding of Jesus, but because one can see how God Our Father makes perfect each life, Glorifying his great love.
And of course, the Bible, The greatest testamony!
God bless, pickles

my uncle bought it for me in a christian book store. Interstingly enough i posted on here that i was going to watch it and I think it was greybeard said hey, I know that, its a true story happened near where he lives. I'm passing it on to everyone I know it truly is wonderful! Angus Buchan wrote the book that is penned under the same name so maybe buy the book, its probably better than the movie (usually works out that way)

oh another good book you'll like pickles is left to tell about a ladies faith in enduring the Rwandan Holocaust by Immaculee Ilibagiza. I loved it cause these issues like the rwandan holocaust are hard for me to understand the intricate politics of it all is overwhelming but this book gives it life and a face. This is the book I recommend to everyone!

Besides the Bible. The book that changed the direction of my life was Exxperiencing God. After completing it I surrendered to God's call to full time ministry. The most recent book was The Shack.

What did you think about the Shack John? I joyed it as a work of fiction but was a little uncomfortable with some parts of it... contrary to who I know God to be but great to get me thinking about personal relationship with God & what that looks like in the authors mind.

I enjoyed it as a work of fiction. I felt it was contrived in some areas but overall it was a good read. It also challenged me to expand my ideas of what it means to have an abiding, loving relationship with God, Christ and the Holy Spirit.

As a Driven Leaf by Milton Steinberg. About the Talmudic rabbi Elisha ben Abuyah (aka Acher "the other") and his struggle with reason and faith.
