Like with any book, you should start from the beginning. Genesis is the book's foundation.

Hi 1teri,

Johns gospel would be a good place to start. Ephesians would be another good place.

Keeping God first is a priority for us all, sometimes we all fail miserably, but God will always be there to help you. If you are saved He will be in you already :), keep, praying, reading His word, and fellowship with other Christians is crucial.

Anyhow, I'll pray for and I am sure others here will be aswell 1teri

kind regards

phil

I have just started reading the bible, and I found a helpful website that lays out a reading plan for the reader that lasts about two years if you want to finish the entire book, and basically you read a few chapters everyday. I have learned that the Bible is not one book alone, it is a vast library of many books and letters that proclaim Christs' teachings. The website I use is http://pastorbrett.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/professor-horners-bible-reading-plan/
I really think there are so many ways to approach reading the Bible, not just one. If you start from the beginning and try to read through the end, you may be discouraged and end up quitting, as i did. But on a plan (you can google bible reading plan and get a thousand plus search results all with good information) that will provide a steady process that flows but keeps you interested. Whatever you do, good luck, and the word will bring such joy and advice in your life as it did mine! :)

Start with the new testament. Once you understand the Grace of our Lord and savior then go into the Old testiment from the begininng. (Lest you become overwhelmed by the law and the geneologies) The book of John is usually the first book recommended to new to Christ. matthew mark luke & John are all different accounts of Jesus and his teachings and death & resurrection & more than one book may contain the same story. All are the word of God. In conjunction with the new testament read psalms and proverbs. Pray and sometimes the Lord will give you scripture in prayer. God bless you as you know the Lord by his word. Please always pray for understanding before you read regardless of where you decide to start. I would definitely NOT recommend starting in Genises... I tried this and ended up not reading my bible for a couple of years until someone told me exactly what i just told you. Understand Christ first then get into the history of the prophesy of Christ and God's relationship with the people prior to Christ.

There was no new testament writings at the time of John. The scriptures that those then had to base any validy on was what we call the old testament. I believe that for those new to the Bible, starting with the new testament, especially John, the reader can get a false idea as to what the Bible is presenting.

If you are Christian start with the New... If you are Jewish, stick to the old.

Oh & please let us not draw the new Christian into confusion with debates over Gods word and the validity of Gods word. You are unsure of your spiritual status Israel so I would think, do not give a new Christian advise on the Bible when you are unsure lest you cause her to be unsure as well by following in your footsteps. God bless you & I do pray that one day you too will become sure.

You make it seem as if the Christian Bible starts with Matthew.

Israel, imoss is trying to help someone, your are trying show off and not helpful.

and I beg to differ, there where new testament writings in the time of John (when did John die, and when was the first letter we have written?) and yes, we know that the scriptures Jesus and his disciples at the time of Jesus were the OT. But Jesus opened their eyes to show them what it meant and foreshadowed.

anyhow this is not the time and place, not when people are asking for help and advice.

Kind regards

I'm not trying to show off. It's just that I believe in the Bible as a WHOLE and take exception to any implication that any part of scripture may be considered outdated or worse. You made the statement that Jesus opened their eyes to show them what it meant and foreshadowed, but if a person is new to the Bible, how can that person know what Jesus foreshadowed if not for atleast some understanding of the old testament? Now I would never refute anyone's opinion as to how to start the Bible as truly the Spirit will lead that person. But how is a statement of Christians starting with the new and Jews sticking with the old helping? Isn't that a recipe toward leading that person to error?

What you have said, shows that you have not understood what was said. and when someone is asking for help and advice why did you feel the need to confuse. anyhow that's all I have to say.

And I am quite sure as to my spiritual status. Christian or non-Christian has nothing to do with my spirituality, as the only choice other than those is unsure.

I will be the first to admit; I find parts of the OT rather drawn out and repetitive, it is hard to read in some places. I also think starting with the book of Genesis would be a way to get the 'whole' picture.

But without sending out alarms, a few other writings also aide to the learning experience. Like the Infancy Gospel of Thomas, although not accredited to be factual, does give a good reminder how Christ was man, flesh and blood, with human weaknesses, but glorious potential. Might I also mention reading the writings of the earliest church theologians like Turtullian, my favorite writing is The Apology by Turtullian.

So in effect, some offhanded writings does help keep one tied to the Word, for His Word is not burdensome, It is rest for the busy soul.

You can read the entire Bible, cover to cover. If you don’t plan to do that, you can start out by reading the four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—the four books where the teachings of Jesus are found.

There are Bibles which are meant to be read over a period of a year and have a daily reading from the Hebrew and Greek scriptures, then something from the Psalms or Proverbs. They're usually pretty cheap and small. It's a systematic way to go through it all and, because of the variety, it may be easier to keep up.

who knew such a simple question required such a complex answer? Sheeesh, glad I already know Jesus; just think what the answers would look like if I asked who he was.

There is no wrong way to eat a reeses if you love candy, and no wrong way to start reading the Bible - if you love Jesus and pray for guidance.

LOL

I just noticed that it has taken 9 more posts to answer this question than it did to clarify my existential post on reality - isn't that just the way we Christian work?

Lord, give us your guidance
