I have a question, and please pardon me if I'm being totally ignorant on this subject. When a believer is saved, God gives him a new Spirit (Ezekiel 36:26), is that the human spirit, reborn? Or is it the Holy Spirit? Also, does this mean a believer has... both the human spirit and the Holy Spirit?

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NASB95)
23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:16 (NASB95)
16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,

Our human Spirit is the new creation in Christ and is the temple that the Holy Spirit dwells in.

As unbelievers we are body and soul. As believers we are body, soul and spirit(human spirit)

All human beings have a spirit, but the spirit of the unbeliever is 'dead in trespasses and sins' (has no real life because it is separate from the source of life.). When we become Christians our spirit is made alive in Christ an the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the sons of God.

But it is because the unbeliever has a spirit that he seeks to worship, even though it be falsely. It is the spirit which is 'the image of God' in man and makes him distinct from animals and a worshipping creature.

Human spirit reborn by The Holy Spirit. Our Lord's Message that we must be born of both water and The Spirit signifies the change in our spirit unto His Salvation. See the NT example that some had only heard of and had the baptism of repentance of John, and later as soon as they heard of Christ's resurrection they were baptized in Christ and born of The Spirit. And yet others were born of The Spirit upon hearing of Christ but had not yet been baptized of water, and then were baptized (end of Acts 10; Acts 19.)

Man Is Mortal

“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils
the breath [air] of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7).

Man, formed from material dust of the ground, upon breathing air, became a living soul

It does not say man is, or has, an immortal soul.
What was formed from material ground became a soul.

The word “soul” is translated from Hebrew, the word nephesh.

The Hebrew nephesh merely means a breathing animal

animals are called nephesh in: Genesis 1:20, “moving creature” (Hebrew, nephesh); Genesis 1:21,
“great whales, and every living creature” (Hebrew, nephesh); Genesis 1:24, “living creature” (Hebrew, nephesh).

The translators in translating into the English language used the English word “creature

but in Genesis 2:7 they translated the same nephesh into the English word “soul”

—man became a “living soul” (nephesh).

The word nephesh literally means “life of animals,” referring to physical life and not spirit
the soul is physical, composed of matter, and can die.

Satan’s lie to mother Eve that man is immortal and cannot die.

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground;
for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return

the spirit in a man

- this is not Gods holy spirit given to us , everyone has one of them.

1 The burden of the word of the Lord for Israel, saith the Lord, which stretcheth forth the heavens,
and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.

- science calls it youre concience, they can't see, or feel, or understand it

8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

- it's what imparts thought, it seperates mans brain from animals

7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

- a recording of youre life returns to God, without youre body it knows nothing and it's not immortal
or alive by itself. this spirit in man, if combined with Gods Holy spirit makes man complete

man

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked…” (Jer. 17:9)
“…the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walks to direct his steps

“There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death”

“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes…”(21:2)

“For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness…

Anything that one gives deference to above his Creator becomes his god (Ex. 20:3).
We must not conform to this world (Romans 12:2)

there is a process for salvation (Acts 2:38)
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every Word of God” (Luke 4:4).

The Hebrew language has two words translated as Spirit:

רוּ֥חַ ruach is translated as wind or Spirit. When רוּ֥חַ ruach is used with the word קָ֝דֹשׁ Holy or in the form רוּחִ֖י ruachey my Spirit, it refers to the Holy Spirit. as it does in verse 27. When רוּ֥חַ ruach appears alone as it does in verse 26, it still literally means wind or spirit; but in Hebrew idiom it refers to mind.

Ezek 36:24-36
24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.
25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.
28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.
29 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you.
30 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen.
31 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.
32 Not for your sakes do I this, saith the Lord God, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel.
33 Thus saith the Lord God; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded.
34 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that passed by.
35 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited.
36 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the Lord build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the Lord have spoken it, and I will do it. KJV

נִשְׁמַ֣ת neeshmat is translated as breath in Gen 2:7 but it is often translated spirit. This is the spirit of man.

Gen 2:7
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. KJV

Note the similarity between Eze 36:24-36 and Jer 31:31-34

31 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the Lord:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

To counter fleshy reasoning, all one need do is read these...

1 Peter 3:18-20
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
KJV

1 Peter 4:5-6
5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
KJV

Matt 10:28
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
KJV

2 Cor 5:1-2
5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
KJV

Luke 16:22-23
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

The word nephesh literally means “life of animals,” referring to physical life and not spirit
the soul is physical, composed of matter, and can die
so were we non extant before we were born of this earth?

The ancient philosophers taught that man is essentially an immortal spiritual “soul” housed in a
temporary body of flesh—that the real man is not the body, but an invisible, immaterial “immortal soul”
that thinks, hears, sees and will consciously live on forever.

At death, according to the speculation of the ancients, the soul leaves the body and journeys to
a nebulous realm, possibly paradise or a place of punishment. The body, they observed,
goes to the grave.

the Jewish Encyclopedia explains: “The belief in the immortality of the soul came to
the Jews from contact with Greek thought and chiefly through the philosophy of Plato, i
ts principal exponent, who was led to it through Orphic and Eleusinian mysteries in
which Babylonian and Egyptian views were strangely blended

The doctrine of the immortality of the soul, according to this respected encyclopedia,
came from pre-Christian Greek philosophers who acquired it from pagan Egypt and Babylon!

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

-Man is composed of flesh. Jesus plainly says that if one is born of
(and therefore composed of) flesh, he cannot also at the same time
be born of (composed of) spirit. He must be one or the other!

18For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me;
but how to perform that which is good I find not.

-Paul did not distinguish between himself and his flesh in this verse.
He indicated they were one and the same, of himself and his flesh as being synonymous

-at The Creation of Man, the whole man—“thou”—that was composed of dust? Genesis 3:19
was composed of nothing but earth!

God blew air—“the breath of life” containing oxygen—into the man’s lungs
through his nostrils, and the man began to live!
The verse does not say God breathed an immortal soul into the man.

22All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.

- the same “breath of life” also pass through the nostrils of animals, as do humans.
the breath of life that is cut off when a human being or an animal drowns.

If the “breath of life” referred to an immortal soul, then animals, birds
and even insects—gnats, fleas, mosquitoes, etc.—would all have immortal souls!

7And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed
into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

-Man does not have a soul—[man IS a “soul]

The original Hebrew word for “soul” is nephesh.
Bagster’s Analytical Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon defines it as “breath,”
and “anything that breathes, an animal.” It can also refer to a “person,”
or even “one dead, a dead body.”

In Genesis 1:21, 24; 2:19; 9:10, 12, 15-16 and Leviticus 11:46,
the same word nephesh is translated “creature” when referring to animals.

And so man is a soul. Notice that the word nephesh is translated as “dead body”
or “the dead” in Leviticus 19:28; 21:1; 22:4; Numbers 5:2; 6:11 and 9:6-7, 10.

The “soul,” then, is merely an air-breathing entity that is subject to death and decay.
It is not immortal!

The soul is composed of the “dust of the ground.” It is material, not spiritual; it is matter.
When man breathes, he is a “living soul.” When man ceases to breathe, he becomes a
nonliving or dead soul.

4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine:
the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

20The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father,
neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous
shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

-If the soul were immortal—eternal—could it die?
man is plainly said to be “mortal” Job 4:17.

-Since man is a soul, and the soul is mortal—then man is mortal, subject to death.

-Life After Death?

5For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing,
neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

4His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

-we can logically conclude that man does not have an immortal soul that is conscious
and aware of things happening around it after death!

17The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence.

-If dead Christians had immortal souls, wouldn’t they be praising God after they died,
thankful to be with Him in paradise?

the Bible often uses spirit simply to mean man’s mind, intelligence, attitude.
To distinguish this “spirit in man” from mere physical breath,
the book of Job continues in context to use two separate Hebrew words
—ruach for spirit, neshamah for breath (Job 33:4; 34:14).

-the origin of the “immortality of the soul” doctrine

Satan told Eve she would “not surely die”in other words, that she had an “immortal soul”
that would live forever. Eve swallowed this lie completely!

Job asked the question, 14If a man die, shall he live again?
all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come. Job 14:14.

- appointed time, till his change comes

51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound,
and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

- the last trump, when our change comes, will put on incorruption and immortality

15As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness:
I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness. Psalm 17:15.

-David and all those in the resurrection will be like God

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be:
but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

-when he shall appear,[Christs second comming] we shall be like him;

we, therefore, will be composed of spirit as well 1 Corinthians 15:42-49.
Man to Become Spirit

Man is mortal, corruptible flesh—organic matter with a temporary life.
He does not have eternal life inherent within himself.
He does not have an “immortal soul”! He is a physical, fleshly creature
destined to die, turn to dust and remain that way
except for the intervention of the Almighty
except for the resurrection from the dead!

This is an interesting concept. Where did you get this information from? We normally give a reference to our information. Is this by any chance Kabbalah?

this raises some interesting questions. the Jewish people, who our Lord called a nation of priest, the nation Jesus came from. before they were influenced be greeks, they believed they were of nothingness before they were born and returned to nothingness when they died? seems a bit odd for a spiritual people.

-good because an immortal spiritual “soul” is [not] in the bible also

The belief that the soul continues its existence after the dissolution of the body
is a matter of philosophical or theological speculation rather than of simple faith,

and is accordingly nowhere expressly taught in Holy Scripture

so when our Father says He knew Jeremiah before he was even formed in the womb whats He talking about if Jeremiah was nonexistent at that point.
