All human beings have a spirit, but the spirit of the unbeliever is 'dead in trespasses and sins' (has no real life because it is separate from the source of life.). When we become Christians our spirit is made alive in Christ an the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the sons of God.
But it is because the unbeliever has a spirit that he seeks to worship, even though it be falsely. It is the spirit which is 'the image of God' in man and makes him distinct from animals and a worshipping creature.

Human spirit reborn by The Holy Spirit. Our Lord's Message that we must be born of both water and The Spirit signifies the change in our spirit unto His Salvation. See the NT example that some had only heard of and had the baptism of repentance of John, and later as soon as they heard of Christ's resurrection they were baptized in Christ and born of The Spirit. And yet others were born of The Spirit upon hearing of Christ but had not yet been baptized of water, and then were baptized (end of Acts 10; Acts 19.)
Man Is Mortal
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils

The Hebrew language has two words translated as Spirit:
רוּ֥חַ ruach is translated as wind or Spirit. When רוּ֥חַ ruach is used with the word קָ֝דֹשׁ Holy or in the form רוּחִ֖י ruachey my Spirit, it refers to the Holy Spirit. as it does in verse 27. When רוּ֥חַ ruach appears alone as it does in verse 26, it still literally means wind or spirit; but in Hebrew idiom it refers to mind.

And so man is a soul. Notice that the word nephesh is translated as “dead body”
or “the dead” in Leviticus 19:28; 21:1; 22:4; Numbers 5:2; 6:11 and 9:6-7, 10.
The “soul,” then, is merely an air-breathing entity that is subject to death and decay.
It is not immortal!
The soul is composed of the “dust of the ground.” It is material, not spiritual; it is matter.
When man breathes, he is a “living soul.” When man ceases to breathe, he becomes a
nonliving or dead soul.
4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine:
the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
20The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father,

the Bible often uses spirit simply to mean man’s mind, intelligence, attitude.
To distinguish this “spirit in man” from mere physical breath,
the book of Job continues in context to use two separate Hebrew words
—ruach for spirit, neshamah for breath (Job 33:4; 34:14).

Satan told Eve she would “not surely die”in other words, that she had an “immortal soul”

Man to Become Spirit
Man is mortal, corruptible flesh—organic matter with a temporary life.

And so man is a soul. Notice that the word nephesh is translated as “dead body”
or “the dead” in Leviticus 19:28; 21:1; 22:4; Numbers 5:2; 6:11 and 9:6-7, 10.
The “soul,” then, is merely an air-breathing entity that is subject to death and decay.
It is not immortal!
The soul is composed of the “dust of the ground.” It is material, not spiritual; it is matter.
When man breathes, he is a “living soul.” When man ceases to breathe, he becomes a
nonliving or dead soul.
4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine:
the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
20The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father,
neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous
shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
-If the soul were immortal—eternal—could it die?
man is plainly said to be “mortal” Job 4:17.
-Since man is a soul, and the soul is mortal—then man is mortal, subject to death.

-we can logically conclude that man does not have an immortal soul that is conscious
and aware of things happening around it after death!
17The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence.
-If dead Christians had immortal souls, wouldn’t they be praising God after they died,
thankful to be with Him in paradise?
the Bible often uses spirit simply to mean man’s mind, intelligence, attitude.
To distinguish this “spirit in man” from mere physical breath,
the book of Job continues in context to use two separate Hebrew words
—ruach for spirit, neshamah for breath (Job 33:4; 34:14).

Satan told Eve she would “not surely die”in other words, that she had an “immortal soul”
that would live forever. Eve swallowed this lie completely!
Job asked the question, 14If a man die, shall he live again?
all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come. Job 14:14.

Man to Become Spirit
Man is mortal, corruptible flesh—organic matter with a temporary life.
He does not have eternal life inherent within himself.
He does not have an “immortal soul”! He is a physical, fleshly creature
destined to die, turn to dust and remain that way
except for the intervention of the Almighty
except for the resurrection from the dead!

this raises some interesting questions. the Jewish people, who our Lord called a nation of priest, the nation Jesus came from. before they were influenced be greeks, they believed they were of nothingness before they were born and returned to nothingness when they died? seems a bit odd for a spiritual people.
