What did Jesus mean when He said, “I am the Light of the World” (John 8:12)?

The world and our own understanding lies in darkness (apart from Jesus), where Jesus who is the Truth came both in Word and deed revealing the Father to us. (it would take volumes to fully answer your question). Even the Pharisees and Scribes who knew God's Word inside out were in darkness as long as they refused coming to Jesus.

Darkness= ignorance, confusion, superstition etc., regarding eternal things.

Believers are light in the Lord. We are either in this world..in the light or in darkness...His light is the life of men...we get our life from Him now.
John 1:4 (KJV)
[SUP]4 [/SUP] In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Acts 26:18 (KJV)
[SUP]18 [/SUP] To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
2 Corinthians 6:14-15 (NASB)
[SUP]14 [/SUP] Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness?
[SUP]15 [/SUP] Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever?

Ephesians 5:8 (NASB)
[SUP]8 [/SUP] for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light

If you truly had an intimate relationship with Jesus, you would just know what he meant by saying he was the light of the world. He would so light up your spirit there would be no questions. Crossnote is correct in that only when you give yourself to Jesus completely do you understand. Those who do not will not understand. They do not have the Spirit in them to give revelation to this word.

To really understand Jesus as the light can't be put in words. It is a heart thing that mostly is experienced, not mentally figured out.

Luk 1:76-79 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; (77) To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, (78) Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, (79) To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
