why is it so hard to believe that the baptism in the water must be performed in the NAME OF JESUS CHRIST?
now, why is the name so important?

-when someone wants to adopt a child, he or she will have to give his/her name or last name to the child in order to make him part of their life or family legally. so is with us. if we wanna be part in jesus´ family, we need to accept his name to become his heirs.
some brothers tell me "we have matthew 28:19" but THERE ISN´T any baptism performed like that, nevertheless. there are more than 12.000 baptisms performed in the name of jesus christ as in ACTS 2:28 ....

i believe in the almighty father, in his son jesus christ, and in the holy spirit. but there is only one name given to the men to be saved, the name of jesus christ.

It's the believing that gains us salvation. It's the baptism that seals it by our obedience, and public declaration.

Romans 10:9-10
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. [SUP]10 [/SUP]For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Ephesians 2:8

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--

were the apostles wrong when they baptized thousands of people? then why does acts 2:38 says .. be baptized ... for the remission of sins.

The word, "for" doesn't mean "in order to gain" remission of sins, but it means, "because of" their remission of sins.

1 Corinthians 1:14-17I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

I might also add that going to a building for worship with a sign out front that says, "church of Christ", won't save you either

37Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

The apostles all baptized in the name of Jesus.

Acts is a very transitional book. There isn't any evidence from Acts 8 onward that repentense and baptism will gain you salvation.

Please notice that it says that you will recieve the "gift of the Holy Spirit", Cornelius and his household got "the gift of the Holy Ghost" (Acts 11:7-15) BEFORE any of them were baptized.

Christians should receive water baptism after they are saved. They must be saved first to be baptized.

Many young believers are confused over the water baptism because they have never received correct teaching on the subject.

Ac 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

Here in the 8th chapter of Acts we see Philip give us a clear order of salvation before water baptism.

For the cause of Christ

Just to finish the thought...

Act 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
Act 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

This is showing belief was first required before water baptism.

Another baptism thread.. These and the works for grace threads are getting out of hand.

if people want to be saved spiritually by physical water, And not the water Jesus spoke of in John 4 (Spiritual water also called the Holy Spirit) let them.

As for me. God the HS baptized me into Christ as God promised he would.. Then he annointed me with the HS, and sealed me with the HS,,

Its all God. not men,,

While truths can be extracted from the book of Acts its more of a historical account of the church beginnings. Johns disciples were baptized prior to being saved believing the prophetic scriptures concerning John preaching repentance to the nation of Israel thus the scripture;

Acts 19

19 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples [SUP]2 [/SUP]and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when[SUP][a][/SUP] you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
[SUP]3 [/SUP]So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
[SUP]4 [/SUP]Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” [SUP]5 [/SUP]On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [SUP]6 [/SUP]When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues[SUP][b][/SUP] and prophesied. [SUP]7 [/SUP]There were about twelve men in all.

So we can conclude that apart from receiving the Holy Spirit there is no salvation....water or no water

there are some brothers in this thread saying that the only baptism that matters here is the baptism in the HS, what happens with HEBREWS 6:2 .."of the doctrine of Baptisms..."?

There is the initial baptism in water for new believers, and then there is the baptism in the Holy Spirit available for every believer. Time after time in the NT we read of believers receiving the baptism if the Holy Spirit. We are encouraged to receive this subsequent baptism of power that anoints us and gifts us and enables us to walk out our callings with ease, great fruit and success.

I'm new to this forum, but if it's appropriate to ask, I would like to know if you are of the Churches of Christ? I am a former member and Acts 2:38 is the passage most referred to by these folk because water baptism is the primary doctrine taught by this group.

Peter was speaking to Jews. There was a mikveh in the Temple and a number of bathing pools around Jerusalem. Immersion was nothing new to Jews. They were used to self-baptizing by bending their knees until the water came over their heads. (Messianics still do it this way today.) Peter had just told them that they, the Jews, were responsible for the crucifixion of Christ. He was telling them that they needed a baptism of repentance. He did say, "Repent and be baptized..."

The Book of Acts shows the transformation of the early Jewish church to become one that was as the Apostle Paul claimed it would be, one that accepted Jews and Gentiles as the "new man in Christ," the Body of Christ.

In Romans Chapter Six Paul calls baptism a likeness of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians are baptized as their identification with Christ and what Christ did to reconcile mankind to God. How we are saved is God's choice and provision, and not our choice.

1COR. 12:13.
For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles,
whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Christ and John set the pattern in stone...this is our example...Christ had no need of baptism,
He was showing us that this is what we must do...the 'old-man, buried and put-away'....
He was acting-out His own death, destiny, to die for US......

the feeling that we get from performing this sacred example is really a powerful reality of our
new beginning....having the desire to change from that person we had been, up to the time of
our being called and chosen by our Saviour, this is such an intimate reality and a new knowledge of
true, familial Love...our desire for a Spiritual Life comes to the forefront of our life's purpose.....
