Sorry if this has already been touched on (no pun intended), but I asked the pastor at my church if it was wrong to masturbate and he replied, "It depends on what you're thinking about when you do it." Since I'm married and most of my fantasies evolve around my wife I figured I was in the clear. Is there any biblical scriptures that forbid this act directly? I know Jesus says than when a man has lustful thoughts he's laready commited adultery in his heart but my wife was injured in a car accident so intimacy is not availble at this time. Also I read an article last week in Men's Health saying that masturbation is healthy as it lowers the cortisol levels in the blood stream reducing stress and helping manage insomnia. Any thoughts appreciated, thanks.

You're clearly an atheist (or some other non-Christian) pretending to be a Christian.

I personally know of no scripture that forbids it, or even discusses it? I suspect it might be a way of relieving oneself of natural desires. In 1 Corinthians 7:9, Paul says that its better to marry than to burn (with desire, passion). But he doesn't discuss what to do if you marry and then have a wife who won't or can't put out :) . But certainly, if one is consumed with fleshly desires, masturbation is better than going out and raping someone. If someone is hormonally wired, I tend to think self massage can reduce stress and allow a person to think straight, but I'm sure others believe that God didn't give us a hand for that purpose :). One things for certain, if its a sin, nearly everyone is guilty.

What...?

@tannerbrody - I'm not sure that there is a prevailing piece of wisdom on this one. You struck some key points (e.g. adultery in the heart, "it depends on what you're thinking of," etc.) that others have remarked on; maybe they'll chime in again here. One thing I noticed in your post-

Since I'm married and most of my fantasies evolve around my wife...
-I'm guessing you meant revolve, also, not "evolve" (correct me if I'm mistaken). Anyway, that's sort of a red flag.

I believe that there is something within every one of us that tells us when we do something that is wrong. Maybe just take a moment and think about how you feel after you do it. Pray about it and you will find the answer.

Not sure that masturbation is wrong per se, but it is kind of gross. It's on the same level as picking your nose or chewing your fingernails.

Yeah, maybe. Maybe this apple cart needs to be upset. :p

I think your pastor is correct. Lust is explicitly talked about in the bible, but no mention of masturbation. If your wife approves and you're thinking of her, I see no reason why it would be wrong.

Ge 38:9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

Make of it what you will.

I think it's sin. I did it when I was married once while thinking of him and then God gave me a dream. I was in this closed area and had to give all my belongings. There was no sky, like a prison with a lot of people and a glide in it. Everyone jumped in that glide. I stepped in it but then God showed me where that glide went to: a green pool with two gigantic demons of lust in it, so I stepped out. Then I saw 2 weapons of mass destruction: judgement.
I remember I was estaunded that noone warned these people. I saw young girls just jumping in.
The fact that in that marriage I couldn't even control myself for a day and had to have sex was because it already started in sin and the unclean spirit was never kicked out. In my other marriage I would stand dry for years and not have this problem, because then I was set free from it.

There is no direct references to masturbation in the bible.

The 2 common scriptures used to say masturbation is wrong is Genesis 38:9 and Genesis 1:28, 9:7, and the scriptures of sexual immorality !!!

The one's from Genesis such as in chapter 38 however is not about masturbation, and they say masturbation is a direct violation to the command to be fruitful and multiple !!!

I can not agree with the usage of either as we are under the New Covenant and must go by what we are told there, and yes there is scriptures on sexual immorality !!!

This is where I would agree with your preacher as if you are thinking about your wife when you do the act then you are fine, but if you are thinking about other women then you would be committing adultery by the act as you would be lusting in your heart for another woman !!!

It is better to relieve yourself (while thinking of your wife) then to go seeking other sources !!!

This text cannot be applied to masturbation, because Onan was having sex with a woman at the time, not by himself. In this passage, Onan rebelled against the direct command of his father in Genesis 38:8, "And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother." Onan displayed contempt towards both his dead brother and his wife. Indeed, this was evil in the eyes of the Lord, "therefore He killed him" (Genesis 38:10).

It would probably be nice if you talked to someone privately about this.

It's wrong to feign interest in something while all the time skirting the real issue with subterfuge.

This really is a Christian site. Christian means followers of Christ. When will you be hitting that point instead of this constant barrage of games when you really don't care about the answer?

BTW, "wrong" as in playing con games on people. "Wrong," as in sinful, you don't really care to deal with yet.

Even the verse you've provided gives context to show that masturbation isn't the focus here.

Anything outside of sexual relations between a husband and wife is sexual immorality and therefore, sin.

Is it fornication?

Fornication, as used in the bible, is sexual impurity, sexual immorality.
So again I ask, is it fornication?
