I don't know why it bothers me so much. But I can't stand to witness it or be around it. It just makes me angry inside. And I think a lot to do with it too is I get a feeling of fakeness. I always get the impression it's for show with pastors and people. I've youtubed some vids of people falling down as the pastor shouts at them or pushes them. What's the purpose of that? Why do people feel it necessary to act in bizarre dramatic ways?

I love listening to sermons and preachers and all of that but as soon as it turns into one of those episodes of crazy I get instantly turned off and leave or turn the channel. Does that make me not love Jesus enough that I don't want to participate in that? I feel like the outcast when it comes to this. Could someone explain why people act like they are high on acids for the sake and show of "Jesus"?

If you are referring to the common charismatic concept of the Holy Spirit, such as getting 'drunk in the spirit', speaking in tongues, and all the real showy type stuff, or even worse things than that like barking, animal behavior, etc... then probably you feel that way because you know better inside. I was saved into that environment but decided i needed to come out of it years later. I felt less guilt, less pressure, less sense of failure and closer to God leaving all of that behind. I think people into that are sincere, but misguided.

Why does that happen too people? sincere or not sincere. What's the main purpose for it?

Some people took statements in the bible and turned it into a doctrine. Much of it is considered more of peer pressure and just making yourself believe things are happening to you, instead of you making them happen. And in some cases people suspect mass hypnosis.
Similar happenings take place in Tibet with pagan/occultic religions. The roots of such movements come from individuals with questionable spiritual practices.

so is it ok for Christians to turn away from that part of it? It's not like if you are a Christian, you "have" to participate and believe that?

I have refused to be a part of that for almost 20 years now. Sure the Holy Spirit can lead and guide us, but not make us act like fools. Or imitate pagan religions. If it's not from the Holy Spirit then participating in it would be bad, really.

You're welcome. I've known many others who have walked away from this as well. All of them feel they are better off.

I went to a charismatic church by accident when I first got baptized. They had a preacher similar to Creflo Dollar performing faith healings on stage and people were throwing money around like it was a strip club. I only went because a friend told me it was different than the stuffy, boring catholic mass I had to attend as a kid. It sure wasn't boring, I'll tell you that much. I also got to see my favorite Christian rock band Guardian perform that was cool. But yeah, what's even more weird about speaking in tongues and all that is I've met so many people that do it but they never want to talk about it like it's offensive to bring it up. It's like asking a Mormon is they wear holy underwear (temple garments). They deny they do, but we all know the truth. I don't have a problem with something being sacred, but I do have a problem with something being secret.

You should be warned that it is possible that you will catch a lot of flack for posing this question and opposing the "Spirit filled" churches. There are a lot of people on this forum that support this circus and defend it vehemently. Just remember what the ministry of the Holy Spirit is and practice your discernment, proceeding with caution when reading any of the comments from contenders.

John 16
[SUP]15 [/SUP]If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments. [SUP]16 [/SUP]And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever, [SUP]17 [/SUP]even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you. [SUP]18 [/SUP]I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you. [SUP]19 [/SUP]Yet a little while, and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye behold me: because I live, ye shall live also. [SUP]20 [/SUP]In that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. [SUP]21 [/SUP]He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself unto him. [SUP]22 [/SUP]Judas (not Iscariot) saith unto him, Lord, what is come to pass that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? [SUP]23 [/SUP]Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my word: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

[SUP]24 [/SUP]He that loveth me not keepeth not my words: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me. [SUP]25 [/SUP]These things have I spoken unto you, while yet abiding with you. [SUP]26 [/SUP]But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.

There are more people who think just like you do. The worst experience I have had related to what you spoke came when I found myself in charismatic meeting where people around me shouted, spoke in tongues (totally gibberish) and I felt like under demonic attack.
It was very confusing.
I have once felt it when demon tries to attack me physically (paritally because of my own choise to talk to it, which is NOT recommendable, but enough about that). Anyways I felt similar and it was so conflicting. I thought that "this is suppose to be God worshipping, so why I feel like this"

@Forthangel My intentions aren't to stir anyone up or oppose anything anyone else believes in. I am just looking for understanding in it. Christianity and it's beliefs are all still very new to me and my comprehension skills of trying to understand a lot of biblical terms and slang still stand out as a foreign language in a way. Last time I asked questions, my thread turned into arguments and which led me to feel quite stupid for even asking questions, so I left this site for a while.

Thank you for the verses, especially the last one. When is the Holy Spirit around? Is it like Jesus just everywhere? Is there a difference between the works of Jesus and the works of the Holy Spirit?

Look through the Bible Discussion Forum. Every thread ends up in a nasty debate. It's not just yours. It's the people that frequent here. Often it's better to avoid this area.

I used to be like you. I used to get disturbed by those kinds of goings-on. I still don't appreciate the shouting or shoving methods (and avoid people who practice that), but you can fall over naturally (of your own accord - no-one forces you). Has Holy Spirit's power been faked by many? Yes, does that cause many of us to be extra wary? Yes. But I don't think we should close ourselves off from such things. We should be discerning and always test the spirits by the Word of God. There are some very genuine people of God who do such things. Just try to avoid the crazies or the manipulative kinds.

Hi
I feel the same way.
While living in Scotland I visited an afternoon meeting in a Pentecostal church
They were all speaking "In tongues", and no one was interpreting
I too felt like it was mass suggestion (or worse).

That being said, I have experienced a person in another church speak in tongues, with an interpreter , which felt more genuine

Don't worry. I was only warning you so you wouldn't be surprised.

As for the works of Jesus and the works of the Holy Spirit:

Jesus completed his work while on the earth when he went to the cross and rose again. He is now in heaven awaiting the time when he will return. He sent us the Holy Spirit in his absence to guide us into truth and to work in us to produce good fruit and to be conformed to the image of Christ.

The Holy Spirit's power was evident through the Apostles when they performed miracles as confirmation of the authority they had to speak for God. The sign gifts were not meant to last forever. They served the same purpose as they did for the rest of the prophets in the bible. We now have a completed canon of scripture with all revealed from beginning to end.

The things you described in your OP are not mentioned in scripture, but some will twist scripture to make their preconceived idea of the Holy Spirit fit. Many of them turn the Holy Spirit into an idol of sorts, even if their view of Him is inconsistent with scripture.

The main thing to remember is that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. One thing you can do to determine if a practice or "miracle" is from God or not is to examine the TEACHINGS of the one claiming it's from God. If what they are teaching does not line up with scripture or they have in some way maligned God as revealed in scripture, then the miracles can be categorized as false.

2 Thes. 2 shows us that satan can also perform miracles and signs and wonders, so there is a danger in believing every spirit. As Tintin stated, we have to test the spirits to see if they be from God.

--

With that being said, I'm sure someone will accuse me of being antichrist for not believing the sign gifts are still active so let me pre-empt that by saying:

God can work miracles any time he pleases. Am I seeing bonafide miracles today that resemble those clearly portrayed in scripture? No. Does that mean God isn't doing them? In my opinion, yes, however, it is possible that God is still working certain miracles for people at certain times, but I contend that it would be extremely, extremely rare. God still heals, albeit providentially. He may still heal miraculously on occasion. Like I said, I haven't seen it for myself, but am not opposed to the idea that he still does. Salvation in and of itself is a bonafide miracle IMO.

The circus sideshow we see in a lot of churches today though is not miraculous. It's a mockery of the true faith and a mockery of the Holy Spirit.

It may be the Lord in you Who gets angry. He got quite angry when He cleaned the temple up. There's a thread about it: stupid things christians do. Some is demonic, some is emotions and baby christians and not listening to Paul who said everything needed to be in order. My mom used to jump around in the service. It wasn't the devil, but it was stupid, because she scared away others so she was told to stop acting weird and control herself. There was an awesome revival meeting. It was the Holy Spirit. My dad who didn't believe came too and thought it was great. Then she got so excited because the Holy Spirit was there so powerful that she yelled ooh and aah and you know acted weird and my dad got so mad and he left. I got mad too. For goodness sakes think of someone else please. Finally he was open to hear the gospel.

Trust your feelings of anger when you see people acting like that. Jesus was humble; "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
" (Matthew 11:29). His Holy Spirit doesn't overwhelm people, its a still soft voice. So when you see people doing cartwheels down the church aisles, there's probably a spirit at work there, but its not the Holy Spirit. So I get the same impression as you, that its all a phony side-show. I think this verse was in reference to them; "Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." (Matthew 7:22-23). jmo

There are always fakes in every area of Christianity. There will always be people doing things in the flesh. As Coby says..there are baby Christians too acting like babies which you will see in the thread she mentioned. Just follow the Holy Spirit within you and all will be well! Getting to know Jesus and what He has done for you is the main focus in our life.

Find out all that He has done for you in the New Covenant and you will grow in knowing Him and how much He loves you dearly.

Bless you!
