I believe Jesus was talking about unbelief. The disciples were looking at the boy being thrown on the ground. Anytime we look at the natural circumstances around us and not keep our eyes on Jesus we begin to fall in faith ( like Peter walking on the water when he took his eyes off Jesus )

Prayer and fasting to me makes us focus on things of the Spirit and not our flesh. This "focus on the Spirit within" overcomes unbelief.

The other thing I get from those passages which you didn't ask for but I'll throw it out there....is that if we viewed the disciples failure to heal that boy as "it must be God's will not to heal every time"...we would be wrong...because Jesus who is the exact representation of the nature of the Father showed up and healed the boy. Jesus is perfect theology.

I don't think its really about a lack of faith...they were trying to cast out the demon already

Many people in the west deny the reality of the spiritual realm and either fear or exaggerate demonic activity.

If Jesus said 'this kind' , meaning the demon (s) , He was referring to the fact there are different kinds of demons

Jesus had all authority over demons..we have authority over them IN Christ....in fact, Jesus said Christians would cast them out

Its not a power struggle...its a truth affirmation. ..Jesus is Lord!

Paul wrote"I delight In the law of GOD after the inward man, but I see another law In my members/flesh warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which Is In my members/flesh.

Faith pleases GOD.

Have anyone ever went on a fast and tried to deny your flesh, food when It wants to eat?

Most manuscripts are missing the word 'fasting'.

And he said to them, "This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer."

I have fasted before but not for its own sake, but because I am too busy doing various task that I don't feel hungry or take the time to eat.

My husband fussed at me about it because I can go a few days without food. Dont do it as often cuz she and the kids fuss at me to eat.

I think going without food makes you realize that your body, your life is more than flesh.

God gives you energy to accomplish His tasks and sometimes He tells you to eat.

If the bridegroom is with you there is no need to fast.

Mark 9:17-24
King James Version(KJV)

17.)And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

18.)And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

19.)He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

20.)And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foamin.

21.)And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

22.)And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

23.)Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

24.)And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

Sometimes I have fasted for a week at a time...just drinking water or green tea only...it does bring your body under subjection and "it's cries" for things do calm down..lol...I usually wait until I feel a witness from my spirit inside to do any fasting...the most recent one happened a few days before I had some terrible news but the Lord had prepared my spirit ahead of time and so I was able to maintain the peace of the Lord in the situation.

I am not implying that if the Lord leads you to fast that something bad is going to come.....:)

Fasting is a humbling experience..but shouldn't be done as a show for others

Matthew 6 *“Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. *But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, *so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. - Matthew 6:16-18 http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew6:16-18&version=NIV

I agree...sometimes the breath can give fasting away...lol..it seems lot's of toxins are let loose from the body too while fasting..

I think these verses show the different levels of faith and the reason we need to constantly strengthen our faith... The stronger our faith becomes the stronger the enemy rears his ugly head and the stronger he comes against you.... The disciples tried to cast the demon out... But he was too strong... Jesus cast him out without a problem... They next level of strength in your faith is achieved through fasting... Once you get there and you realize the strength your faith has you understand it... You feel it... You sense it.... And then you move on to the next level....
