What did Paul mean by this verse :

12Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Philippians 2:12-13

What part of our salvation are we responsible for "working out"?

Are we to live in fear and trembling of what; failure?

Keep your eyes on Jesus, and trust him through the Spirit to work in you so that you will be all he wants you to be.
I love verse 13 it tells us much

fear and trembling = awe and wonder

This post has nothing to do with Kierkegaard or his mixed up philosophies. I posted the verse and the questions to stimulate dialogue about one of the most often discussed and misunerstood verses in the Bible.

A simplistic "fear and wondering" doesn't quite cover the question.

Kierkegaard was a Christian.

1. We are supposed to practice the work that Jesus is doing in our hearts during the life-long sanctification process - turning us into citizens of Heaven. Working it it out means practicing love by serving God and our neighbors while making a human connection.

2. Fear and Trembling means awe and wonder - it implies that we need to view the world and it's trials as children. We are supposed to be surprised and excited and blown away by the works of God in our lives and the world. Fearing God does not mean worrying - it means trusting and suspending our disbelief in the future changes we are going to encounter - trepidation, but not despair.

Fear of God?
From what I have learned from the scriptures fear of God is the begining of wisdom.
Fear of the Lord is like the first light of morning, becoming ever brighter untill the full light of day.
Trembleing?
I havnt seen much yet on this but I see it as part fear, mostly trembling with the greatness of Our Lord God, Our Lord Jesus, and the wonder and guidence of the Holy Spirit. Personally, I see the trembling having most to do with the Holy Spirit as the Holy Spirit is within us, affecting us both in spirit and body. Trembling with the Presance of the Holy Spirit.
God bless, pickles

our salvation is by grace, which is growing into a relationship with god. he does not intend to have a long distance relationship with us, but one that is up close and personal.

as we draw near to god, to the father, we will see ourselves in the light of his holiness and purity and love. we will see ourselves in his light, as we truly are. this will cause fear and trembling many times. but this is such a blessing to us, as we learn to see by his light.

all of us have darkness in us that needs to be exposed to the light. this causes us fear, and trembling, but also brings truth to our hearts. in truth, this is the only way to know what we truly are.

Don't disobey God he could wipe you off the planet. You are in this world to be the glory of God. Do as much as you can to spread God and do good deeds with your life. You will be rewarded on earth and in heaven with what you do with your time on earth.
