Philippians 2: 12
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;
13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
I often think about the day of the LORD's return and how I would feel at the sight of HIS appearing. Whether I would love HIS coming or be thinking LORD I'm not ready yet.

HE advises that we work out our salvation with fear and trembling.
How do you work out salvation with fear and trembling?

I think it important to quote the next verse (phil. 2:13) many fail to quote this yet its a very important part of the thought Paul was trying to convey. our work is to yield our will to His, we do this by devoting time with Him and following the commands given, its really not a matter of bondage to rules and commands as it is walking in a dark world without sight,(2co. 5:7) He leads us in many ways not the least of which is walking the path he has already walked, so yes we should work out our salvation but only doing His way , (prov.14:12) he is working a work in us, but will never force us, we must willingly and knowingly yield our will to His in a loving trust coupled with humility.

There was apparently a problem with the vainglorious, those who lacked humility, at Philippi,

Philippians 2:3-4 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

The passage goes on to explain how the Lord Jesus came as a lowly servant. So, I've always seen the "fear and trembling" aspect of that verse referring to having proper humility, in light of the awesomeness of Holy God, that no man can stand before, in his own merit. Like everybody else in the Bible, if Christ appeared to me in His glory, I have no doubt I'd also fall on my face, in terror, just of His glory, and my lack thereof, this despite being saved.

As to His appearing for His bride, this is the blessed hope (Titus 2:13). Day to day, we "work out" our salvation with care and respect of the Lord, with humility and love of others, not with respect of our own persons and love of self, but we can trust the Lord for our salvation, that we have eternal life and forgiveness of sin. We should learn to trust the Lord this way, and, by this faith, have that joy of our salvation that longs for His appearance. He is your Savior, because He has saved you, has sealed you with that promise by His Spirit, and this you are to have assurance of, belief in His power to save.

John 6:37-40
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise [never] cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 1:13-14 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

Perhaps you could look upon "fear and trembling" to seek not to grieve the Holy Spirit, having care in our walk to show a proper respect for our Holy Creator as best we know how to do, as opposed to being vainglorious creatures of the flesh,

Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

In any event, have joy in your salvation and look forward to His appearing, knowing He has saved you. Trust Him completely in this regard, just praise His holy name Jesus, in that joy! Okay?

Hope this helps, and the Lord give you His peace...

Heres the same word used in Paul

1 Cr 2:1
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

1 Cr 2:2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

1 Cr 2:3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

1 Cr 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

1 Cr 2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Jesus Christ is both the wisdom of God and the power of God (1 Cr 2:2 & 1 Cr 1:24)

Even receiving one they had sent as Paul communicates concerning him saying,

2 Cr 7:15 And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him.

And the OP's 1st and 2nd verse

Phil 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.( Psalm 2:11)

Phil 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. (See also vs 17)

Combination of fear, rejoicing with trembling (See verse 17 of Philip 2 also) same combo here

Psalm 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. (Phil 2:13 fear, with trembling & in vs 17 and rejoicing these used together there also)

  1. a trembling or quaking with fear
  2. with fear and trembling, used to describethe anxiety of one who distrusts his ability completely to meet all requirements, but religiously does his utmost to fulfil his duty.

If used to describe ones anxiety concerning trusting oneself we can see God working in one even in this same (in respects to the requirements) knowledge of ones own inability (which should work in a meekness and fear) as your faith should more rightly stand in the power of God. It appears more like straits in that way.

Not the same word, but same sense of things

Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

There it says, let us have "grace" to serve God in reverence and godly fear (which is as serving God acceptably) in the same.

[SUP]12 [/SUP]Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. [SUP]13 [/SUP]For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.
I think this is an easier translation to understand for most of us that speak modern English...

I like what was said here, especially in line with OP question. Fear and trembling, I perceive as handling the word and doctrine according to design and being mindful of what God is instructing for our work/house/building. We really want to do good and right, but sometimes, if we go off course and establish something carnally, we have to recover ourselves and hopefully we come back to the project and tear down the "wood, hay, stubble" we've built into our house of doctrine, then rebuild it according to God's plan(and His will). The "gold, silver, precious stones" are part of the inheritance and eternal glory God puts on display in the heavenly places, "the kingdom of His dear Son".

[SUP]15 [/SUP]Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
[SUP]
9
[/SUP]For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.[SUP]10 [/SUP]According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.[SUP]2 [/SUP]And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

So, I was more trying to hear of any practical application for this scripture; how different ppl seek to obey the instruction? .......... or is it that I just believe and that will mean I am working out my salvation with fear and trembling.

Don't take it the rude way... but I am trying to understand what is being said in the context of the scripture.

Well, that's just it really, you have this precious treasure to multiply, in an earthen vessel, the doctrine for our house instructs us on how to be useful & effective in this ministry, "meet for the master's use" as instruments of righteousness.

[SUP]7 [/SUP]But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

God is doing something, in addition to salvation. He wants us to be a part of it, we must mature in the doctrine according to His plan and purpose.

Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The verse is not telling us to work it out as much as in puzzling it out but out working to show we are saved by our conduct. Fear and trembling not of fright but of reverence and awe of our mighty God.

For the cause of Christ

jandian, we love the honesty of your post.

the key word in verse PHIL.2:12. is the first word, which is, 'therefore' - when this word is used
we go-back and examine the previous thought written down...in vs.5, Paul says,
'Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus'. - in other words, the thought is like Paul says
in another place, 'Imitate me because I imitate Christ' and then it says, 'He made Himself of no reputation'...
He became a 'servant'....so Paul is explaining to us Christ's behavior, because He worked-out the
'salvation' for all of us...the scripture means to 'become like Him' - because, we have this
precious comfort stated in vs.13, 'For it is God who works in you both to will and to do His good pleasure.'

the expression of 'fear and trembling' reminds us of the fact that we must all appear before the
Judgment Seat of Christ...thus we must walk in Love, Humility, Forgiveness, Wisdom and Understanding,
Reverence and the very simple (3) letter word, TRY'

HE advises that we work out our salvation with fear and trembling.
How do you work out salvation with fear and trembling?

You are only quoting half a verse:

"For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose." (C) NIV

Instead of quoting half a verse and asking about the answer, read on and you will have the answer. God does the works that He wants to do and not works we want to do in our own flesh to appear righteous.

How?
By first remembering this...

Phil 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

So GOD overrides someone's will when that person wants to sin?

He doesn't override a person every time he wants to sin. But He DOES work in that person to will and do of His good pleasure so that verse 12 will be accomplished :).

He has no difficulty in overriding our will

So you are saying if GOD is working in me, I don't have to pay attention to the first part of the verse?
"I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abide the in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."

It is hard for some people to separate their works from God. Help us.

No we are saying that because of verse 13 we can accomplish verse 12.
