To Mary the angel said,

Luke 1:36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

syggenēs

  1. of the same kin, akin to, related by blood
  2. in a wider sense, of the same nation, a fellow countryman

I dont know what that would make John to Jesus

John's mother Elizabeth and Mary were close kin, and Mary bored Jesus.

Luk 1:36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, were cousins.

So Jesus and John would be related.

I don't think so. Mary and Joseph were of the tribe of Judah; Elizabeth was of the tribe of Levi. The word that is translated cousin, simply means kinsman.

Now see...
Jesus DID say right here friends, that John was tops over any man of flesh

Matthew 11:11
Verily I say unto you. Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: Notwithstanding he that is least in the the kingdom of heaven is greater than he

(Now that was beautiful.....
Nobody can give a compliment like Jesus...no doubt!) lol

Luk 1:34-36, 57, 59-60 MKJV [v.34] Then Mary said to the angel, How shall this be, since I do not know a man? [ie a virgin] [v. 35] And the angel answered and said to her [Mary], The Holy Spirit shall come on you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you. Therefore also that Holy One which will be born of you [Mary] shall be called Son of God. [v. 36] And behold, your cousin Elizabeth also conceived a son in her old age. And this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.
[v.57] And the time was fulfilled to Elizabeth for her to bear. And she bore a son. [v. 59] And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and were calling it Zacharias, after his father's name. [v. 60] And his mother answered and said, No, but he shall be called John.

I don't think so. Mary and Joseph were of the tribe of Judah; Elizabeth was of the tribe of Levi. The word that is translated cousin, simply means kinsman.

This has made me want to know what the latest scholarship has to say about the translation of cousin vs. kinsman. Not that it's important to me to know this....:) they were definitely related.

They were cousins, so why, in today’s Gospel, does John the Baptist suggest twice that he doesn’t know Jesus? There’s an explanation, a hypothesis based on modern history—since the Bible itself doesn’t speak of it—and it seems a plausible explanation. The family of John the Baptist lived in Judea, while the Holy Family lived in Galilee, so the geographic distance would have restricted frequent visits, even if the annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem would have given them the chance to see each other.

If Mary's mother was a levite and her father of Judah then they could be cousins. Jesus would then be second cousin to John

I'm sure that's possible, but the answer could be as simple as Mary and Elizabeth were kinsman from the same town, Bethlehem. There is absolutely nothing in scripture that forces or requires them to be 1st cousins. In fact, IMO that's very unlikely because Elizabeth was elderly and Mary was probably a teen.

Mary and Elizabeth were close enough that Mary spend three months with Elizabeth ---

Luke 1:56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
