There is purpose in me asking what I'm asking, but don't expect a sermon after the questions are answered. I will, however reveal why I ask at some point. (I'm not good at patience nor quiet, but I will try to keep quiet as long as I can. lol)

Three simple question:
1. What were you expecting the first time you came on BDF? (BDF -- Bible Discussion Forum. Where you just landed, in case this was an accident.)

2. What did you want?

3. What do you get? But this is a two part question:
3a. What do you get that you weren't planning on getting.
3b. What do you get out of returning? (Why do you come back?)

Full freedom in answering however you want to answer, because that is what I'm hoping you will do -- answer however you will answer.

I expected nothing and come back out of boredom and the sweet people here.

From day one I never searched out the BDF. I always hit the latest activity tab, and whatever pops up is what I see. I have for awhile now searched specifically the Prayer request forum, but I've always thought the first page of the recent activity shouldn't have any duplicate thread responses like the 1st 7 of 10 all start with the same thread. This way you don't have to scroll several pages to find a thread that might interest you.

Civilized conversation of Biblical topics. Bible study. Cross-referencing of passages.

2. What did you want?

Nothing personally. I get all the Bible study I need away from CC and in much higher quality.

3. What do you get? But this is a two part question:
3a. What do you get that you weren't planning on getting.

Shock at how impolite many people are; surprise how narrow-minded and dogmatic some people are; dismay that so many goofy ideas are so pervasive.

3b. What do you get out of returning? (Why do you come back?)

Nothing. The BDF is not for me. It's just slightly interesting enough that occasionally someone will bring up a position I hadn't considered, but I don't know that I've ever truly learned anything new from the content of the BDF

when i first joined in 2012 i was so terrified of the BDF i posted only in the prayer requests forum. (coward!)

what i expected/wanted was so much less then i actually got. :)
i had been preoccupied with raising a family/homeschooling, and the BDF forced me to study. it forced me to look up scripture and frankly, i had to google about a thousand terms i had never heard in the Baptist church we were going to.

i've learned about sound doctrine, both from 'good' posts and 'bad'. i've learned so much about loving the Lord our God and loving my neighbors.

i come back to (i hope!) encourage others who were where i was, and to encourage myself not to stay where i am.
and quite selfishly, because i've grown to love so many of you.

The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him. (Nahum 1:7)

(yes, even in the BDF :p)

Well ... I don't attend church, and fellowship with my 13 year old does have it's fellowship limits. I know I'm not supposed to forsake the gather of myself with others ... so this was/is my attempt at fellowship with other Christians.

AND

I love studying the word of God. I love talking about the bible - it's my favorite subject. Combine that with a total lack of people around me (in the world- and even Christians) who want to talk about the bible ... and I am left quite hungry for exchange.

I was honestly hoping for a peaceful, light-filled environment where Christians exchanged scripture and thoughts about it in a respectful, loving manner. I DID find a few members who I feel are indeed brothers and sisters in Christ. I also found a great many who feel like strangers to me ... they talk the same talk but walk a different walk.

I was hoping to share and hear great testimonies about revelations, signs and wonders ... but because of the strangers and because it's open to all on the internet I cannot nor can others wisely share their pearls. So alot of milk here and almost no meat ...

I did get a gem or two though, wading in the sewers ... and every couple of days there's a good thread or two that I enjoy ... lauding God and giving testimony of His goodness or greatness

What a great idea!
I was first looking for a prayer group when I came here.

I wasn't really expecting anything when I first came to the bdf, however this place has been a very vital place in my growth as a believer, there was joy and sadness there was attacks and such but I learned so much just for being on here I grew as a believer and a person

1) What was I expecting on BDF? Literate Christians, correct theology, grown up Christians.
2) What did I want? Real Bible study.
3a) What did I get that I wasn't planning on getting? The mixed multitude that always gave Moses problems.
3b) What do I get out of returning? Helping people.

I see incorrect theology, I see the mixed multitude, I see more obstacles to communicating God's truth here. I see immature believers here.

I actually considered asking someone to close my account yesterday but I'm only here to help others with the Bible or Christian things.

Was I quiet long enough?

My only questions after seeing the results is this:
Has everyone noticed how different the expectation, wants and needs are from one another? Is it a bad thing that they are so different?

Nope, it doesn't matter to me. If people want change then they'll make it. I saw enough of the BDF to know I have no business there and even if they rolled out a welcome mat for me I'd still say no. I get all the Bible teaching other places, and from people who have formal education and decades of experience to back it up. As far as I know, everyone on these forums is some crazy axe-slasher or a Fed, so I keep my distance unless it's necessary to speak.

Well, I joined christianchat.com about 15 years ago!!

I came initially out of curiousity and wanting to connect with other christians.

Then when I finally started learning some sound teaching from scripture.. I started posting in here to get people to think about some of the doctrines that are popular but not necessarily scriptural.

The other thing is.. I sometimes go in the bible discussion room in chat.. but getting your view across in that is madness. If the room is busy.. the scroll speed means, if you are a typer, there is little chance of getting heard. So the bible discussion forum becomes better for getting views across.

I was seeking people who wanted to discuss the Bible and the deeper meaning. I got a ride awakening on how broken people who claim to be the Body of Christ is and meet some strong mature Christians who have helped me on my walk with Him.

Some made me mad and some made me cry, but God help me see past the hurt and understand the love behind their words and we became close friends.

One died a few years ago and I still miss him. Not sure how many of you knew Abiding but he was a very humble prayerfilled man, who toke the time to talk and pray with me for hours.

I come back because most members of my Christ care group and friends are asleep at 2 am and this site challenges me to pray and question if my beliefs are based upon what the Bible says or what men have said about the Bible.

I just realized one good thing I am experiencing here.

I forget who said it ... but someone said if you can explain something then you really understand it.

This is a great venue to try and explain what I think and believe.

Sometimes my attempt to explain is easy and comes out just right ... and I know I understand.

Sometimes, for the life of me, I find I can't explain something ... then I realize that I don't quite understand it as well as I thought I did. :)

Expressing myself here is helping me to sift through my beliefs and test them to see if they stand or not.

i do indeed remember Mike, and i miss him, too.

he (along with a few others) helped me unlearn some of the things about which i was believing wrongly.

thanks for the happy memory of a friend. :)
