I've always been taught a Christian should fast and pray. However not taught how. What exactly is fasting? Other than not eating ;)

I don’t know, but those of us with low blood sugar can get very ill if we fast.

I don't know much about i either, but I suggest fasting not on food, but on something else you feel could be taking away time you should be spending with God (like TV, video games, reading things that are not educational or christian... whatever it might be that you spend time on just to pass time)

Exactly. Which means there must be more to it else God would not ask it of us.

I don't exactly know how to fast.

But this is what I do.

On Wednesdays I fast for 6 hours from the time I wake up.
First, I pray, I also read the Bible the whole time during my fasting- with 5 minute breaks every hour or so (to use the bathroom, etc.,). Then afterwards I worship.

Every Christian will have their own idea of what and how to fast, so I will share mine.

I will not enter into a fast unless I feel God telling me to or if I need to hear from God for a particular purpose. When I do fast, I set a period of time to fast (usually 3-5 o 7 days). I then abstain from whatever I am fasting from for that period of time. If I am abstaining from food, I will do a juice fast, taking some OJ or Apple juce every six hours. If I feel hunger pangs, I pray until the pangs past.

Every time I have fasted, I have received peace about whatever the situation was and God has favored me with either asolution or total peace so that I will not fret about it.

I am not saying this is the best way but it does work for me.

See what God has to say about true fasting in Isaiah 58.

Some people have stronger wills and bodies than others. They can fast for days. Having no food and only drink water. Fast like that actually cleanse the body. Get a lot of poisons out of the body.
I can't do that. I will tell myself and the Lord that I am fasting. Lets say I'm interseeding for someone who has a demon and I need the Lord to show me if I am to have any part of getting it out.
I don't eat till maybe dinner time for days.
Also if you are doing warfare for someone it is very important to eat. And to eat protein. Meat. Warfare is very hard on the body. Meat gives the body strength.
Satan has tried to tell people to be vegetarians because he wants the people weak and die during warfare.
Like someone else said some people can't go without eating.
They can give up other things.
A fast is a sacrifice to God.

I have fasted in the past from all food and drink for a few days. If I feel God telling me to do this is the only time I will do it, but I have had some amazing revelations while doing this. There is an awe in completely relying on God for your sustenance.

If you fast you need to drink plenty of water else you will get light-headed and pass out.

Fasting from water also? I think that was done in some places in the Bible but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone.

When Jesus fasted, he went to the desert. This to me implied the lack of water. I was convicted while fasting of this fact, that Jesus is not only the Living Bread, but also the Living Water. I said that I was convicted to do this, and I definitely would not recommend everyone to fast this way.

If God convicts you to fast God will provide a way for you to be able to endure it without discomfort.

Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights and then afterward He hungered.Nobody can fast for 40 days and 40 nights unless the Lord keeps them alive.

Hi resurrection33,

Yes, you are correct. Before starting a fast, be sure you get your Doctor's advice. Most of us fast to some degree or other - without even knowing it! For example, when I finish my evening meal, usually at about 6:00pm (1800 hrs), I don't eat again until breakfast the following day at around 6:00am. Sometimes I will have a glass of water before going to bed.

Once a week - typically on a Monday - I abstain from solid food for a full 24 hours. I do drink water during this period - lots of it. When I resume eating I don't go all out with a gourmand's delight, but instead break my fast with easily digested foods such as natural yogurt, fresh fruit, and several slices of toast lightly spread with butter or margarine. And, of course, water.

Moderation is the key. Again - and this is very important - don't embark on any fasting without consulting your doctor. Listen carefully to - and follow - his advice. Easy does it.

I don't want to put anyone in danger, but who has our faith? Our Lord and Savior, or our doctor? I'm just asking?

Well, some people think they have faith but they don't. I heard a few years back of a bunch of people who tried walking on the water somewhere, and they all drowned.

When people have the true Living Faith, they will know it without any possibility of doubt.

The point is to have some discomfort. Other wise why would we do it. Jesus didn't die on the cross cause it felt wonderful. It hurt. Fasting is giving something up.
Like you don't say I'm going to fast this-----but you never liked that anyway. Wouldn't have been eating that anyway. You give up something you really really like.

Fasting is sacrificing something that you value for a period of time, to refine your spiritual ears to hear the Lord more clearly. The biggest mistake that people make when fasting, is they take the approach that it is earning something from God. Fasting should be something you want to do as a devotion to the Lord, not something you do to earn a deeper relationship with God.

Sometimes people also fast during times of confusion or uncertainty to hear the Lord more clearly. This is fine as long as you aren't starving yourself in protest of your circumstances toward God. Unfortunately many people do this under the guise of fasting. Fasting should always be an act of worship unto God.

Hopefully this helps!

This is nearly the opposite of everything I've heard (well until recently). Thank you for your post. It gives much to ponder.

Just like anything else, fasting should not be something you are doing outside of Grace. We are saved by Grace, and enter into His Presence based on the righteousness of Christ, not ours. There is nothing further that we need to do to enter into His Presence because Jesus already won that privilege for us.
