One of the most powerful things we can participate in during Good Friday is reflecting on the Seven Last Words of Christ on the cross.

They are arranged below chronologically, as according to theologians, Jesus spoke them.

Allow each word, each sentence, spoken by our Savior to pierce your heart with awareness of your sin and of God’s great forgiving grace

The First saying:
“Then said Jesus, ‘Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.’ And they parted his raiment, and cast lots” (Luke 23:34).

The Second saying:
“And Jesus said unto him, ‘I say unto thee, Today thou shalt be with me in paradise’” (Luke 23:43).

The Third saying:
“When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, ‘Woman, behold thy son!’” (John 19:26).

The Fourth saying:
“And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?’ which is, being interpreted, ‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?’” (Mark 15:34).

The Fifth saying:
‘After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, ‘I thirst’” (John 19:28).

The Sixth saying:
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, ‘It is finished’”: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost” (John 19:30).

The Seventh saying:
“And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, ‘Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit’” (Luke 23:46).

How are the Seven Last sayings of Christ, spoken nearly 2,000 years ago, impacting you today?

I'm quite amazed by the fifth saying. Clearly God's presence had left Him during the time of God's wrath being poured upon him. But at that point, the Holy Spirit came back into Him, and led Him to fulfill the scripture.

I am very emotional about Jesus' words today. The level of that sacrifice still perplexes me. The greatness of my unworthiness and Jesus chose to forsake that sin to die for me is an astounding concept. Today I am truly humbled by the Love and dedication of my God!

Thaddeus,

I am sorry that the only thing you could think to say about the seven last sayings of Christ is that I got them out of order. I copied them from a source by a well known Theologian. I stated that in my post.
The import of the post were the sayings not the order they are in. I could have chosen to put them in order of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John but you probably would have found something wrong with that to.

I will pray for you brother!

In Christ!

I humbly apologize. I did not mean to offend you. My words were unneccessary and unkind. Please forgive me.

In the 4th saying God's presense did not leave Christ.Jesus said that the Father will not leave Him alone.

God did not pour any wrath upon Jesus for Jesus did not deserve any wrath.

God never left Christ.

When the sins of the world were placed on Christ to take away He felt what it was like to be separated from God but God never left Him.

It was the man Christ Jesus, the flesh, crying out because He felt what it was like to be separated from God but God never left Him.

I've heard it be preached & this makes sence to me that the 4th saying was actually Christ's reference to the 22nd psalm as back then the psalms were named and not numbered and this is the first of that psalm. Anyone else know anything about this?

I suppose this is a common debate, whether Jesus was made sinful or not. The Bible says that He was indeed made sin for us. That would indicate to me that He was made completely sinful until after He completed His work. This is something I would need to read up on further.

Anything except knowing and loving God and Jesus is vanity, but somewhere there has proven a value - among the greatest saints - to debate theology over the years.

To fully understand this, we have to remember Jesus' prayer in Gesthemanee. He cried out to God in dispair over what was about to come to pass. To "let the cup pass from him" was a fully human response to pending tragedy, but then "Not my will but thine be done." this was the Son of God surendering to His Father's will. He fully understood the extent of the suffering to comeand went forward with a willing resolve. However, even Jesus could not bear the thought of being alone and separated from His father.

No greater love...

Praise God!

Id like to give a coment, but it is all so great a gift and sacrifice. I do not have enough words or can find the words to give true testament of the greatness of it all. Where to begin? Where to end? It is, and all that is his greatness.

Im enjoying all that others say in this.
At the moment Im overwhelmed by all.

God bless, pickles

The sayings that impact me the most, were not his last words, but the words he preached for three years prior it. The last "seven" sayings are commonly abused for fanatics who wish to analyze everything with their unconnected mind.

A while back the Lord kept telling me it is finished, its finished. He did it all. He did everything for us already. He gave us his blood. He gave us all the keys we need to call heavens powers to earth. We pick up his cross and go on to do as he has taught us.
