Maybe God is saving the best for last. It is a favorite question of the non-believer, though for sure I know that does not apply to you. It does make me think of how some of the miracles Jesus performed are referred to as Messianic, for they were supposed to help people identify Him, which He pointed out to those who rejected Him. The Messianic miracles (according to this site: http://jaymack.net/isaiah-commentary/Gl-The-Three-Messianic-Miracles.asp) were the healing of a leper, the exorcism of a mute demon, and the healing of a man born blind. I once was blind, and have been cleansed by His blood...

Indeed. I know how I would answer it. But I love reading varying opinions.

It's one of those "gotcha" questions unbelievers think are so devastating.

Agreed. But I'm asking what you would say to an unbeliever who asked the question. They certainly don't believe in new, incorruptible bodies.

You just watch what God can do through any amputee who trusts in Him.
To look at them and question why God won't restore their limb(s) is looking at the external only.

The question assumes he won't/can't do it. But of course Christians know God is able to do anything -- but it is true that this one doesn't happen often? Does anyone have a verified story of God healing an amputee? If he could raise Lazarus from the dead (when his body was probably already decaying), then he could produce a missing limb as well.

In reality, part of the picture is that God is going to give the Christian an incorruptible body in heaven. so as Garee said, "Don't lose your head over it!"

I appreciate your answer, but once again, we are not preaching to the choir. What would you say to an unbeliever who asked the question?

Healing was a sign to Israel. Since the perfect Word of God has come, there are no more need for signs. "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."

Actually to be even more specific, it was a sign to unbelieving Jews.

He will give them new bodies upon ressurrection and he does heal them ...emotionally, spiritually...also he stops the bleeding and, keeps, out infection....do it would be incorrect to say that does not heal amputees.....

The real question is why does God not have them grow another limb?... Well cancer would be my answer, but that makes for a more complicated answer.

Ah! I didn't catch that on the original question: answering an unbeliever? . . .

That is a tough one!

Something like this: God is able to do anything -- He raised Lazarus from the dead (when his body was probably already decaying), so he has the ability to produce a missing limb as well. But God is not in the business of doing miracles for attention or to make people happy or to sharpen the pride of a "healer". His concern is centered on the hearts of people so that they may believe on Him so the work of His kingdom can be furthered. I do know firsthand of one Chinese brother who had a crushed limb (from torture), but God healed it! This was evidently a miracle God did for the purpose of showing the prison guards his power and to lead them to Himself.

I would ask the unbeliever why does God let them live in the first place?

Note your original post does not say unbeliever

He does, it's just a matter of timing.
To the unbeliever, 'first things first'. What good is a sound body if you lose your soul?

First I'd like to say that whether you have this problem, or someone you know of, my heart goes out to you, and to all who suffer in this way.

To grow back a limb that has been amputated would be a miracle. It would be something that Jesus could have done while He was on the earth. But miracles had a purpose, and that purpose has been fulfilled. Miracles were for identification of the prophets, of the Christ, and of the apostles. But now that we have God's complete word to us, we no longer need a prophet to tell us, therefore we no longer need miracles to prove they are who they say they are.

Even when miracles were in effect, they had a spiritual purpose, not a physical one. Had that been the case, Jesus could have stayed here and been the most famous doctor on earth. He could have been the most famous chef on earth- making multiplying food that could have fed the whole world. Why, it would be heaven here on earth. But the purpose of earth IS for us to struggle, to be tested, to see who qualifies for heaven. Who will be patient in affliction, and produce the other fruits of the Spirit?

If you squeeze a lemon, you will get sour lemon juice. If you squeeze an orange, you will get sweet orange juice. So the question, and the test for all of us is... "How are we under pressure?" Because that is when who we truly are inside comes out to be seen. The sweetest ever witnessed, before that time or since, was Christ on the cross asking for forgiveness of those who were torturing Him AS they were doing so.

I have suffered much in my life, but as bad as it was, I know some have suffered more. God does not show favoritism, but what I'm thinking is that He knows how much each one of His children can suffer for Him, and that the more one does suffer for Him, the more they will be rewarded for all eternity. Again, these are just my thoughts, not scripture, so don't take it as absolute truth.

But one thing I am 100% certain on- and that is my heart glows with compassion for those who suffer so much, and I know if I, a mere human, care that deeply, I know God cares even more. He didn't let His Son suffer for no reason, and He don't let His children suffer for no reason, though it may be hard to accept, He has reason, and that reason is to give us the most blissful eternity that far surpasses our comprehension.

I wish you peace.

This scripture came to mind:

Mark 9

[h=3]Jesus Warns of Offenses[/h]42 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 44 where
‘Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched.’[d]

45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— 46 where
‘Their worm does not die,
And the fire is not quenched.’[e]

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire— 48 where
‘Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched.’[f]

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic

2 And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that He was in the house. 2 Immediately[a] many gathered together, so that there was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He preached the word to them. 3 Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. 4 And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying.
5 When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”
6 And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8 But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, “Why do you reason about these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Arise, take up your bed and walk’?10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, 11 “I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.” 12 Immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!”
