According to one person in the CC, Paul could be one of the original Twelve Apostles...

My question is, why was Matthias chosen to replace Judas, one of the original, in order to fulfill the prophecy of his replacement.

Does anyone believe Paul is one of the original Twelve Apostles according to this thinking?

Hello JaumeJ,

My personal belief is that Paul, not Matthias, was God's choice and his name will be among the apostles names written on the foundations of the new Jerusalem.

I have often wondered if they made a mistake in electing Matthias.

They were told to wait ... wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit ...

Then they went ahead and chose Matthias before receiving the Holy Spirit.

I often think Paul was the one to replace Judas...

Only God knows~

The selection of Matthias is foretold in the Psalms, 109 I believe, when it speaks of the betrayer and later his replacement and how his replacement was selected. (Let me know if this is wrong, and I will search for it further.)

Hmmm Psalms 109?

I WOULD be interested in perusing those verses ... if you find them, thanks.

Yes in the Psalms they are directed to let another take Judas place but they added a stipulation there in Acts also

Acts 1:21 Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

Acts 1:22 Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

I always sort of liked that being there and Paul was chosen outside of that first circle because of the whole apostoilc succession stuff with the RC, because if Peter himself put a stipulation on the twelve originals then wouldnt the RC have to acknowledge that limitation and sort of get off Peter/rock passing keys to them thing?

Again though ... they are speaking these things without the Holy Spirit ...

And I read psalms 109 twice ... there is no reference there about the subject.

This is what they are referencing in Acts 1:20

Psalam 109:8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

This speaking of Judas

Psalm 109:8a.....Let his days be
few.

As we see

Mat 27:5... Judas went and hanged himself.

Mentioned as coming from the book of Psalms here

Acts 1:20 For it is written in the book of Psalms,
Let his habitation be desolate,

As it is written....

Psalm 109:8b...and let another take his office.

And so it was confirmed here....

Acts 1:26 ...and the lot fell upon Matthias;
and
he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

When did Jesus gave them the Holy Ghost here or after?

John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them , and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

well ...... hm ... I find it all a bit vague.

IF ... it is referencing a replacement for Judas Iscariot... then why is Matthias the proper replacement and not Paul?

John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them , and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

Could that have been a promise that they would receive the Holy Spirit?

I always believed the signs at Pentecost ... the wind, the tongues of fire and the speaking in tongues demonstrated the reception of the Holy Spirit ...

Paul was like a disciple "born out of season". He was not present with Christ through His ministry ... but God chose him to be an apostle to the gentiles.

MAYBE the 11 jumped the gun and appointed someone in haste... matthias ... when God already had plans to appoint Paul.

Paul wasn't one of the original Twelve Apostles, He wasn't a believer until he met Jesus on the road to Damascus,
Acts 9: 3--6.
Also he said he wasn't one of the twelve. 1 Cor 15: 5--8.

Acts 1: 20--26 tells us why Matthias was chosen to replace Judas, As the one who replaced Judas, had to be an eye witness of the life, Ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Paul wasn't an eye witness of the life, Ministry, death or resurrection of Jesus.
