I have two different bibles at this time. The NIV and a Life Application Study Bible. I like using the study bible because it has all sorts of notes and cross references listed and book overviews. I was wondering does it matter the kind of Bible you use, or is it more of a preference thing?

There are several good Bibles in English. This question comes up fairly frequently, and it usually sparks another round of vitriol about which is best. May I suggest that you do a search here for "Bible versions".

I was not trying to spark a debate. I was just curious does it matter is all. As long as the message is correct the translation should not matter that much. Of course that's just a theory. Plus my opinion.

The old adage is the best bible is the one you read.
Just stay away from the New World Translation.

Roger my suggestion is to shut this thread down now before more silly posts such as the NIV exposed post are accumulated.

Did you read the info on the link.
A kind of "heads I win", "tails you lose" proposition.
Simply fraudulent in the conclusions that it draws.

And there are others on this forum that will not allow "opinions" since their point of view is simple: KJV good - everything else is of the devil (or at least evil).

The NIV is decent. Is your Life Application Study Bible an NLT? If so, it's good, but it's more of a paraphrase than a translation. The ESV is great. And what I've read of the HCSB is very good. But really, there's nothing wrong with those you have now. They're just not the most accurate translation and paraphrase.

I didnt call it evil. I just posted the link so people can see how wrong it is.. I dont think its evil. I do confess I dont use the NIV often.. even rarely.. but its not evil. But whoever translated it surely disagreed with the Lord on a few matters

*sigh* Demi. It's not the best translation, but it's far from evil.

Yes it's new living translation it's so much easier for me to understand sometimes the kjv with it's weird placement of words and archiac words in general get me lost and I have to read the verse over and over like 2-4 times to figure out what it said.

You didn't call it evil, but the link does. And really, anyone who does some critical thinking in their research can see that it's the KJV that added verses/words, not the modern translations. So the problem lies with the KJV. But it's still the Word of God.

I'm not into all the translation snobbery, but I have always loved the KJV

I am not an onlyist though

And I think the Message bible is the one for this generation:p

Cool. I have that Bible and the NIV and a handful of other translations. But you'll be fine with what you have. Just be humble before God and ask Him what He wants to say to you through His Word. God bless you, mate.

Aren't all translations coming from manuscripts that are believed to not carry the original wording/phraseology, anyway?

The new living translation seems like conversation. I can follow it much easier and I can get more out of what I can understand. Plus I read it more because it's easier to understand too. So in essence it makes it a great bible for me personally. Because it makes it hard for me to put down.

Several translations is a good idea. Adds clarification when one just doesn't click. :)

I like the Amplified because it brings out the meanings of words more. In doing so, though, it often reads longer.

The dribble at the bottom of the webpage:

"After reading the comparisons, there are only two summaries which can be arrived at:
1) The NIV is as corrupt as the NWT, or
2) The NWT is as accurate as the NIV"

LOL. So much for critical thinking.
