Commentaries can vary a lot and might not tell the real truth so I prefer the concordance. would love to do more serious bible study but unfortunately I have a short attention span and am quite busy.

I'd like to get to the point of doing bible study with a concordance, but I just can't seem to carve out that kind of time. Most days I am lucky to have an hour to myself to just read scripture. Maybe one of these days. I'd like to really dig into studying because I think I could learn a lot.

Not really. Most people who lean that way like to get into playing word games, and seem to like to make specific, isolated and disassociated verses say what they want to hear.

I prefer a wide range of reflectively comparing and contrasting full passages so that you develop an understanding of Biblical concepts.

I had a chance a couple months ago to do my usual scripture reading and to track down the cross-references that are printed along the margins. I very quickly found myself in some loop of never ending back-and-forth tracking this reference to that passage and that passage back to this passage and it made my brain hurt for a while. It was a humbling experience.

Just remember that a concordance is a concordance. A concordance is not a lexicon/dictionary. So don't use it like one.

e-sword is my go to for searching out the scriptures. It has Strong's KJV, Dictionaries, lots of different Bible versions, awesome search tools.

I figure that just about everyone says the other guy's translation is wrong. So, if thousands and thousands of true expert translators got it wrong... according to SOMEONE, what chance to we truly believe there is that our meager studies of a particular word or phrase will unearth the truth all others have missed all down through history?

I would really like to get the Strong's Concordance.. the physical version of it. It's part of E-Sword on the PC but I find when I see the physical book I am more focussed in reading it.

That's a pretty good point. What little experience I've had it seems like a person can get so lost in nit-picking words and phrases that they completely miss the larger message or that they end up taking something completely out of context. That's why I want to at least understand what I am reading first before I go deeper. I'll never be a theologian or a biblical scholar.

I've had one for 50 years. It really isn't all it's cracked up to be when you consider the way so many words can be changed by their associated words in various esoteric contexts.

I think you have nailed the essence of Bible reading.

Every now and then the Lord will isolate and highlight a specific word for me ... when that happens then I do some research on it. Following the leading of the Holy Spirit always produces the most effective study, of course.

I used a concordance extensively also when I was delving into the tribes of Israel ... there are many references to each tribe but they are scattered here and there throughout the bible, so it's hard to get a full picture unless one uses a concordance to hunt down every reference before endeavoring to do so.

It's a handy tool to use when you need it.

I like to study the bible by cross referencing scriptures throughout the bible, from OT to NT.
This way, we can get a better understanding of what God says about any particular topic. Scripture says by two or more witnesses His word is established, and by multiple authors all inspired by the Spirit of God, the bible establishes God's meaning alone without the need for commentary and man's interpretation.

However, as NT believers we do need to understand the spiritual application of the Law and how it points to Christ Jesus and what He would accomplish. The Law has not been destroyed or eliminated for NT believers, but we walk in the spiritual understanding and application of the Law as it has been written in our hearts and minds. The Ritual and Ceremonial Law now apply spiritually and not by the letter. The Moral Law has always been spiritual and thus still applies.

Using a concordance and Lexicon are great tools for study. As we do study His scriptures from OT to NT we can consult a concordance and lexicon to get a better understanding about words being used.

using a concordance, not a commentary?

what is it about either a concordance or a commentary or a bit of software that makes a person think

"
ah now i'm being serious" ?

sounds like the lazy, listen to the preacher way.
That's not a very nice thing to say. Especially when it concerns something I said which Willie was referencing. You don't know me. You aren't doing a very good job of making a good first impression. You only get one chance at that, you know?

Leave it to one who has no clue about the message of Jesus to attack the way another chooses to communicate with or learn from God.

well since "jesus" did not speak English, you would think it would be worth the effort to search the original languages.
