2 Peter 2:1-22, TLB
“… there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly tell their lies about God,
turning against even their Master who bought them; but theirs will be a swift and terrible end. Many will follow their evil teaching that there is nothing wrong with sexual sin
But God condemned them long ago and their destruction is on the way …
false teachers are fools—no better than animals. They do whatever they feel like
and they will be destroyed along with all the demons and powers of hell. That is the
pay these teachers will have for their sin. For they live in evil pleasures day after day.
They are a disgrace and a stain among you, deceiving you by living in foul sin on the side
… They train themselves to be greedy; and are doomed and cursed. They have gone off the
road and become lost like Balaam … These men are as useless as dried-up springs of water
… They are doomed to the eternal pits of darkness … they lure back into sin those who
have just escaped from such wicked living
. ‘You aren’t saved by being good’, they say,
‘so you might as well be bad. Do what you like; be free.’ But these very teachers
who offer this ‘freedom’ from law are themselves slaves to sin and destruction.
For a man is a slave to whatever controls him (A). And when a person has escaped from
the wicked ways of the world by learning about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and then
gets tangled up with sin and becomes its slave again, he is worse off than he was before (B).
It would be better if he had never known about Christ at all than to learn of him and then
afterwards turn his back on the holy commandments that were given to him. There is an old
saying that ‘A dog comes back to what he has vomited, and a pig is washed only to come back
and wallow in the mud again.’ That is the way it is with those who turn again to their sin.”

This passage condemns both false teachers and their followers to eternal hell.

Believers who choose to be slaves of sin again are the foolish rebellious believers:
(A) that Paul warns about in Romans 6
(B) that become worse off than unbelievers

Actually these verses are NOT about True Believers. These Verses are about those who claim to be Christians but who have rejected Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Matthew 7:15
[SUP]15 [/SUP]“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

Matthew 7:21-23
[SUP]21 [/SUP]“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. [SUP]22 [/SUP]Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ [SUP]23 [/SUP]And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

I agree with you that 2 Peter 2:1-22 is not talking about true believers that are sealed by the Holy Spirit for the day of redemption ( our new bodies ).

Even "if" it was alluding to true believers in Christ - it never said that they do not go to be with the Lord when they die. It says their end here in this life will be miserable. If someone decided to take up shooting heroin - there is a good chance they will die a horrible death.

The Holy Spirit is with us forever Jesus said.

John 14:16-17 (NASB)
[SUP]16 [/SUP] "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;

[SUP]17 [/SUP] that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

Ephesians 1:13 (NASB)
[SUP]13 [/SUP] In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise,

The Spirit of truth is with us
forever!

2 John 1:2 (NASB)
[SUP]2 [/SUP] for the sake of
the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever:

John says we are safe in the Lord as He keeps us. Isn't that exciting to know that?

All scripture has to be interpreted in light of the very clear truth of the New Covenant.

The whole chapter 2 in 2 Peter is talking about false prophets in verse 1...then in verse 9 Peter talks about the unrighteous ( the unbeliever )..

then in verse 13..they are stains and blemishes ( believers have no spot or blemish because of Jesus..1 Peter 1:19 Eph 5:27 Eph 1:4 )..all through that chapter he is not describing a believer in Christ.

Here is a post #49 from mailmandan that dissects 2 Peter 2:20 down for us which discusses the learning of the knowledge of our Lord.

very powerful passage. most here will fight this clear Scripture. I guess Peter knew it, "there will be false teachers among you". Really, I hope they wake up soon. And this is not pride. I was where they are at. Now I know better. Thank you Yeshua HaMashiach, Lion of the Tribe of Judah!

Most scripture is clear when you look at the context. Who is the author writing to is very important. It is also important to filter everything through the finished work of Christ. This is what helps to interpret 2 Peter 2:1-22.

This also helps to identify false teachers trying to pervert the gospel of the grace of Christ - for instance like Judaziers that try to get those in Christ to go back to the law. Paul had them coming constantly after he preached the true gospel and they would pervert the gospel. They are around today too but the true gospel of the grace of Christ always triumphs over the imposters.

true stuff. there is so much written on this very subject, clear warnings against sin. from the beginning in the garden until now and eternally sin is death, righteousness the only life. and the only supply of righteousness is found in Jesus Christ. Not simply saying" I'm in Christ doesn't matter what I do" but the supply of righteousness that is given to those who accept the truth of God, those who hold Jesus as Lord, those who set their heart to live as instructed by the only one who is worthy, the only authority in Gods kingdom. " the wise builders who hear and do what they hear" those who are not deceived by hearing the word only, those who do One thing truly " Love the Lord their God with ALL of their heart, All of their mind, all of their soul, and all of their strength, and their neighbor as thierself" if that One thing is done in TRUTH, if a person can say I love God with all I am all I have, they are doing Gods will.

The movements in the world are many, yet still there is only the one way to the Father. perversions of His Gospel are no more than a serpents whisper..."surely sin is not death", it doesn't matter what you do....Jesus died for you ...sin doesn't matter, its "grace" unwarranted favor now....forget righteousness that's not important, doesn't matter if you stop sinning..just "see who you are in Christ" ect...ect.....who a person is in Christ, looks exactly like Jesus. those in Christ lay down their lives for the one who laid down His life for them. those in Christ reflect His image as in a mirror. they speak, live and walk in the same ways as Jesus.......who we are in Christ. followers of Jesus. the imperfections that arise as we are imitating Jesus, following, believing Jesus are covered by Grace, grace doesn't make life effortless. Grace is ; even though we have all sinned and deserve death.....we were Given a new life to live and follow, a new heart to believe and express.

false doctrines are deadly

Peter is warning very strongly against false teachers, I tend to believe he is talking to believers and that is why he is delivering such a strong message.

The teachers that are false and not saved are indeed condemned.

However, Peter does refer to believers since he is referring our new natures because he talks about (verse 18) those that were clean.

Believers have a nature which is free from the sins which used to enslave us. Whenever a believer walks in the darkness he has forgotten who he is (2 Peter 1:9) and has allowed the flesh to rear its ugly head.

The word "better" in 2 Peter 2:21 is important because "better WHEN?"

The text, properly understood, only allows one answer: better in this life. The false teachers promised their potential dupes liberty (2:19). They actually delivered bondage and temporal judgment.

Warning is Sin pays lousy dividends.

But God knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation(verse 9), the law does not.

It is best to leave the false teacher, because those teachings will bring you back to the pollution of the world.

I honestly dont understand what people mean when they reply with "these verses are for the unbelievers".

Are they making the comment that these things are okay to practice for the believers?

I take the false teachers thing as those in Christ who follow false teachers to believe that its okay to do these things. I think the verses are clear.

And when a person has escaped from the wicked ways of the world by learning about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and then gets tangled up with sin and becomes its slave again, he is worse off than he was before.
It would be better if he had never known about Christ at all than to learn of him and then

saying that ‘A dog comes back to what he has vomited, and a pig is washed only to come back
and wallow in the mud again.’ That is the way it is with those who turn again to their sin.”

This part is about true believers, for they escaped the wickedness of the world, confessing Jesus Christ, and then went back to the ole' wicked ways.

It cannot be denied that it is saying that they have been saved, for they confessed Jesus Christ, and followed Him,and they even escaped the wickedness of the world, they escaped it basking in the goodness of Jesus Christ, but they decided to go back to sin,and lick up their own vomit, and wallow in the mud, like they did before Christ, only worse.

And this is also a testimony, that it would have been better that they have not known the truth, than to know it,and then later on turn from it,further adding that these people were saved, following Jesus Christ, but decided to go back to sinful pleasures.

That means no more me listening,or giving consideration, that once saved, always saved,is true,or you trying to convince me that you cannot fall away,or it cannot happen to you, because it is not a guarantee,so say I'll do my best, and hopefully I will make it,and be happy with that.

The Bible says if any person thinks they stand, take heed lest they fall.

Thanks for pointing that out ZacharyB,but who will believe it,for it does not matter if scriptures testify of something, some people will still believe what they want to believe, and scriptures will testify against them, climbing on their back, choking them, and they still will not believe it.

The Bible plainly states that a person can be saved, and lose salvation,if they do not continue in God's goodness, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for if they do not continue in God's goodness, the Bible says they will be cut off.

Next excuse please.

yes it does

problem around here, is that we cannot agree on who the false teachers are

and some people cannot get off this subject

maybe concentrating on scripture that tells us what is TRUE, will help us avoid that which is NOT true

condemnation is not the message of the gospel

Life in Christ is part of the message of the gospel

I can tell you truthfully there are those on here who preach a different Jesus, but they will swear that I do

this is not a teaching site...it's a public CHAT forum and we would do well to remember that instead of castigating everyone and constantly posting threads that are nothing but an invitation to an arguement

I have to correct that for we should not say hopefully I will make it,but if I allow the Spirit to lead me,and abstain from sin,I will make it.

Peter is writing to believers about false prophets and false teachers - describing them so that we can know what they look like and to be aware of them. I agree with you that if people are saying just go and sin all you want - that is NOT grace. It has absolutely nothing to do with the grace of Christ.

I have never heard anyone that talks about the grace of the Christ say to it's ok to do whatever you want.

Sin is destructive and will destroy us, those we love and is a bad witness of the life of the Lord in us. It also distorts our view of our loving Father and Lord, of ourselves, and of others.

one more thing

you speak of the ultimate fate of believers who continue in sin, yet you post scripture about false teachers

seems to me there is confusion going on right there

the entire quote from scripture regards false teachers

now if you want to talk about continuing in sin, perhaps find scripture for that

otherwise, find what constitutes a false teacher

for example, the Bible speaks of doctrines of demons

false teachers teach doctrines of demons...so, what are those?

I know of 1 Tin 4:1 that talks about doctrines of demons. Here is my take on it.

1 Timothy 4:1-5 (NASB)
[SUP]1 [/SUP]
But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away ( apostesontai ) from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons,

[SUP]2 [/SUP]
by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron,

[SUP]3 [/SUP]
men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth.

[SUP]4 [/SUP]
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude;

[SUP]5 [/SUP] for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer.

What is going to cause this "falling away" ( apostasy )...people who forbid others to marry...and not to eat certain foods...why is this departing from the faith?...it's in verse 3, 4 and 5.

verse 3 = which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. It's in knowing who you are in Christ - who is the truth and the faith....this not marrying and not eating certain foods to keep yourself "separated" from others..is a form of self-effort and reliance on a D.I.Y. self-righteousness/holiness mindset.

This is "departing from the faith - apostasy"....... people creating their own righteousness/holiness through their works of the flesh by self-effort...

It has the "appearance " of good but it denies the power to effect real change ...which is Christ in us and His life.

.. man-made religion denying the finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ.

oh good Grace...thx for supplying that

a false gospel is simply ANY gospel that deviates from the true gospel and we have examples of that provided in scripture so that we don't get carried away with labeling people who may believe a little different but are still saved or those who don't defer to our pet doctrines and so on

if left to our own devices, we can all become God in our own eyes and be filled with false humility and grandiose visions of how important we are

EVERYTHING not done in love, as I stated in the fruit thread a little while ago, is not worth the effort it took to do it.

Not our idea of love either; rather Gods'.. We all fall short and therefore, and this is part of God's plan conceived in His wisdom, we must depend on HIM and not our own self effort

but I digress (must have caught something around forums...a derail bug or something)

let's define gospel according to scripture:
.
The coming of the kingdom is not the effect or the reward of human effort, but God's answer to the human predicament the gift of his favor Luke 12:32

Gospel means simply 'good tidings' or 'good news'

now you would not know that from so many threads in these forums, you would and could be excused, from thinking the gospel is a set of rules in conjunction with condemnation and God playing whack-a-mole with the 10 commandments.

those things, actually come after a person is presented with the gospel and makes their choice.

The gospel calls for a threefold response. (1) Believing. The gospel is "the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes" ( Rom 1:16 ). Faith abandons all reliance on "works of law" for justification ( Rom 3:28 ) and trusts in God's grace imparted in Christ ( Romans 3:22Romans 3:26 ; Galatians 2:16Galatians 2:20 ). One must believe the gospel for here God's salvation is mediated. (2) Growing. The gospel is both a message to be received and a place in which to stand ( 1 Cor 15:1-2 ); it both gives and sustains life. The Spirit imparts wisdom by taking persons ever more deeply into the gospel of the cross ( 1 Col 1:18-2:16 ). Paul is eager to declare the gospel to the Christians in Rome ( Rom 1:15 ), by both his letter and his visit. (3) Hoping. "The hope held out in the gospel" ( Col 1:23 ) includes Christ's return and the heavenly glory ( Col 1:5 ; 2 Thess 2:14-16 ), as well as the final judgment ( Rom 2:16 ). For those who embrace the gospel the judgment holds no terrors, because the Judge has rescued them from the wrath to come ( Rom 8:1 ; 1 Thess 1:10 ); the last judgment marks their final vindication ( 1 Col 4:5 ; Gal 5:5 ). Those who died after believing the gospel ( 1 Peter 4:6 ) have not suffered the fate of the lawless; their response to the gospel assures them of approval by the coming Lord ( 4:5-6 ; 5:4 ) and of a share in the imperishable inheritance of heaven ( 1:4 ). SOURCE

so, GOOD NEWS all!

please do not try to define how I think or what I do in any given situation

I truly doubt you would want to be in my shoes and walk where I have walked and witnessed as I have witnessed and suffered for what is true

stop making assumptions

it does you no favors

how many have you restored? or corrected? or tried to help?

I've done that for years now and will continue as long as God allows

This passage condemns both false teachers and their followers to eternal hell.

Believers who choose to be slaves of sin again are the foolish rebellious believers:
(A) that Paul warns about in Romans 6
(B) that become worse off than unbelievers

That is prophesying the false grace teachers. But they will tell you that scripture isn't for the believers.
