Discipline....temperance
It's really not "active work" sir.
It isn't some form of self flagellation.

It is simply this:
being still, resting in HIM and trusting in HIM..in all seasons...
That is a "passive work"...a decreasing so that HE may increase...knowing that when I am weak, than I am strong, understanding that it is NOT by power or by might, but by HIS SPIRIT...

and sometimes it is more harder to just rest because it requires us not to move, not to do, not to behave according to the flesh...but to wait on HIM...

Paul had to learn to be content in all things...
This is what Paul had to learn...
And this is what Paul learned...

When Paul said mortality had to be swallowed up in immortality, that he filled up in his flesh what is lacking according to the afflictions of Christ, what he was saying was that he had surrendered himself to HIS LORD in all seasons...in seasons of comfort and plenty and in seasons of want

Please remember the verse just prior to your OP:
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

We are to trust in the LORD with all our heart and lean not on your own understanding, (somethings will go beyond our understanding) in all your ways, acknowledge HIM and HE shall direct your steps...

HE told us that in this world we will have trouble...HE told us to ask daily for HIS daily bread...for the evil of the day is sufficient...but HIS BREAD/HIS GRACE is all the more sufficient...if we would only believe and trust that HE is at work in all things...

It's just that we are so conditioned in wanting to see before us where our feet are taking us. It is when we can't see, that we can't move...it is in these seasons that faith is made perfect...because it truly does HAVE TO rest in and on HIM...

It is so very easy to have faith in seasons of sunshine
Another thing completely to have faith in seasons of rain/seasons of Job.

:alien: just read the starting page and the next chapter
then until read them all
like this one
as it is written
:read:
Santiago: 1. 1. James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
2. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;
3. Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.
4. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
5. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
6. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

Mateo: 16. 21. From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
22. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
23. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
24. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

... . not a literal physical cross
as it is written

Mga Taga-Galacia: 6. 1. Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

2. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

3. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
4. But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
5. For every man shall bear his own burden.
6. Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

7. Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
8. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

9. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
10. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

I don't know what verse you are referring to, but we need to remain faithful to the Lord over a period of time. It isn't something you can simply say, "I will follow Jesus," and then forget about it. Life has its challenges and we must continue to obey the Lord through thick and thin.
