Since I was saved in 1980, God told me to read the Bible every day. When I was really sick with RA in the early 2000's, I didn't read once in 2 years, till God prompted me daily to read 5 Psalms every day for a long time. I finally obeyed, and the Psalms ministered to be in every way. I caught up when I went to seminary. When I did NT and OT survey, I read through each book in a number of translations completely through every day. It was a really good way to get the total context for each book.
For years I read 3 chapters of the OT and 1 of the NT daily. It took me a long time I the beginning! A few years back, our pastor was promoting the importance of reading the Bible and we did a chronological read through the Bible, which I am going to do again next year. This year, I am reading 3 OT, 1 Psalm and 3 NT daily. The 3 NT chapters a day, gets you through the NT 3 times in a year, plus it shows the context better. I've really enjoyed that.
I am pretty serious about Koine Greek, and I usually translate a half a chapter daily, which can take a short while, or a long while, depending upon the author who wrote the words down. Luke/Acts are really challenging, 1,2 & 3 John, I can read through straight.
I cannot emphasis enough how important it is for a Christian to read their Bible daily. And hopefully more than just a few verses. If you are too busy, ask yourself why God's Word is not your priority and then cut something out that is less important.
If reading is a challenge, then get a simpler version, and challenge yourself to look up words you do not know. The way people learn to read is by reading, and even someone with a learning disability will improve if they commit to read.
God has ministered to me, taught me, and helped me group through his revealed word - the Bible. It has given me a sound doctrinal foundation, so I am not led astray too often! And if I do fall for something, God is easily able to correct it, because his Word is also written on my heart.
I just want to add a plug for Bible memorization. Even at my old age, I am still working on memory verses. Younger is better, but it is not impossible even for old people, it just takes a bit longer. Having life verses which God has given you hidden in your heart and mind is an incredible blessing because it means the Word of God is always with you!
