If we see a person who seems to have no relationship with God, we sometimes use the term, "lost" person.

Why?

Support thy answer with Scripture, if thou cannest.

Probably in reference to scripture such as John 9:25
He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see"
Being blind = lost spiritually. As well as 1 Peter 2:25 - For "you were like sheep going astray," but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. You can use unsaved if you want I don't know about "forsaken" though.

The lost represent those who have not been born again in respect to having the Spirit of Christ dwell in them. They would be considered those in whom the gospel is hid from.

But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.2Co 4:3

You could say Paul before he became a member of the Nazarene sect previously being under the "law of the fathers" as oral traditions of men as those who had a misguided zeal for God. When Paul tried to kick against the pricks (the authority of God's word) the true law he became a new creature.

Previously working to kill what he thought was the outward competition (Christians) thinking he was doing God a favor, now defending the faith of Christ, as it is written.

Matthew 18:11) For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.
12 .) How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?
13 .) And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.
14 .) Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.

If you think about it, Jesus was the FIRST to establish a "Lost & Found."

"lost" bc for one/thing to be called lost, they must first belong. we first belonged to God before we were lost in Adam!

If a child is lost , they are usually frightened and unable to know what to do with out some direction from those who know.... it was the same for me, when I as a lost child was wondering the world in fear and uncertainty my Savior found me and showed me the way... :)

Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying,
‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’
Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.
(Luke 15:8-10)

The answer is unfounded. ;)

I suspect the word came from the idea that without Christ, we are lost to eternal life. I also suspect we use the term without giving it much thought.

I'm reminded of the song "Amazing Grace," and the lyrics "I once was lost but now I'm found..."

I tend to think it means wandering around without God in one's life and how that will give them no direction. Without God, an atheist may "think" he/she knows where they're going, but it's only based on worldly standards. Everyone will be led astray if they're not following Jesus, IMO. I'm on my phone, I will look later for any Scripture that talks about this.

It's not only atheists who are lost though, many Christians feel that because they say that they accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, that they can be unkind, hurtful, and condemning to others and that God must not notice their behavior or something. If a person says that he/she follows Jesus then their actions should show like they do.

I liked the first sentence.
I guess it's my inner smart alec
i do think of the parallel of the woman and the lost coin though concerning when a person is lost

I try to not use the word lost because I feel like it tends to discourage or make the unsaved person feel bad and so they distance themselves and makes it harder to share God with them. I normally say unbeliever. Plus, you can't base just lost as people who say they aren't Christians because there's plenty of christians who are lost as well. I still even feel like I am.

It's like if someone says your lost in life rather then just struggling. It kinda makes you feel bad. Even if it's the truth when it's a delicate situation id rather not make the person feel singled out or worse if I'm truly trying to reach them. At the start anyways.

Luke 15:32

''But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found."

It still doesn't answer exactly what is meant by ''lost''...but I interpret it to mean, you're lost wandering around in the world without belief in God (that's the key, because God doesn't abandon us, we abandon our belief in Him) The belief changes a person's life for the better, because we need to cooperate with God's grace for it to change our lives. This is my opinion, anyways.

Interesting, I have done a word search and lost seems to relate to
"found things which then became lost" ie lost coin, prodigal son who was lost then found etc.

Either that or sheep which are no longer part of the fold, which suggests they were also
found but are now lost waiting to be found again.

Luke 15:6-7 NKJV
[6] And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them,
'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!' [7] I say to you that likewise
there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just
persons who need no repentance.

Matthew 15:24 NKJV
[24] But He answered and said, "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

Ezekiel 34:16 NKJV
[16] "I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken
and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the strong, and feed them
in judgment."

Jeremiah 50:6-7 NKJV
[6] "My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray; They have turned
them away on the mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill; They have forgotten their
resting place. [7] All who found them have devoured them; And their adversaries said, 'We
have not offended, Because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, The
LORD, the hope of their fathers.'

Maybe lost refers to people who should be part of God's kingdom but who have gone astray.

By contrast people who don't know God at all, seem to be referred to in different term.
Those outside, sinners, blind etc.

Are there other lost verses which might refer to sinners, ie people who never knew God
in the first place? I haven't come across any so far, but it would be interesting if there are.
