Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

Putting off the old man and putting on the new man is what happens at the new birth. It is a deep change at the level of the spirit. It is not something we accomplish on our own efforts. Because the old man has been put off and the new man has been put on we can then live in victory above sin. We don't put off the old man every day. But, there is a daily battle in the Christian life - but it is at the level of the flesh.

I am not putting Scripture references to my thoughts here: I will let that to others . . .

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

It means that the SIN nature is dead and buried for Good, which means you get your choice back regarding SIN.

Because the SIN nature is dead the new man is made alive in Christ....you become a slave to righteousness and not a a salve to SIN and It means that you can chose not to SIN

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
[SUP]2 [/SUP]For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
[SUP]3 [/SUP]For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
[SUP]4 [/SUP]That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
[SUP]5 [/SUP]For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
[SUP]6 [/SUP]For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
[SUP]7 [/SUP]Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
[SUP]8 [/SUP]So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
[SUP]9 [/SUP]But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
[SUP]10 [/SUP]And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
[SUP]11 [/SUP]But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
[SUP]12 [/SUP]Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
[SUP]13 [/SUP]For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
[SUP]14 [/SUP]For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
[SUP]15 [/SUP]For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
[SUP]16 [/SUP]The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God(Romans 8:1-16).

We no longer go by the ways of the flesh, the old man,but the ways of the Spirit, the new man, which we put on Christ, and a Spirit led life will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh, and show the characteristics of the Spirit, which then we are not under the law,for the law cannot touch us for prosecution.

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

Our 'old man' as been crucified with Christ once for all (Rom 6.6). We are to put if off once for all, as we died with Christ once for all. By the Holy Spirit we have put on the new man for ever.

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

Putting off the old man means to not walk in the flesh. It also means to not act like you did before you were born again. Christ came to set us free from the bondage of sin.Galatians5:1. Colossians1:13-14 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.1John2:1 My little children, these things I write to you,so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an
Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1John1:7 But if we walk in the light as He in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus
Christ His Son cleanses us from all unrighteousness. To God be the Glory. Preacha24-7

I think that you must be referring to Ephesians 4:22, 24. These have been misunderstood to be a command, when they are actually a statement of fact. Se also Colossians 3:9-10. I am happy to say that I agree with all of the other comments. The distinction between flesh and spirit is crucial.

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

It means, be not conformed to this world, but be transformed, by the renewing of your mind, so that you can prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
not my will, but His will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven.

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

The "Old Man" is the sin nature (The Law of Sin and Death). The "New Man" is the resurrection life (The Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus). Romans 8:2

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

The new spiritual creation is internal—in the heart and character of each person. It begins when “you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and [are] renewed in the spirit of your mind, and … put on the new man which [is] created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:22-24). This “new man … is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him” (Colossians 3:10).

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

The "old man" was the old you ( spirit and soul ) that was in Adam. This old man was attached to the body of the flesh while we were still in Adam. When we believe in Christ - the reality that the old man was crucified with Christ on the cross comes into being for us. Gal. 2:20 Romans 6:6.

( the saving of the soul is in the renewing of our minds - that is in our brain that has the information in it left over from the old ways of living and trying to find life. We can still be operating from this mindset and thus not really experience "salvation" - wholeness in this life - that is available to us that are in Christ )

There is no such thing as an "old man" left in the believer. There is the "manner of living" that was the old man's way of "doing things in order to try to find life".

This system of thinking and way of doing things that is the old man's in Adam's characteristics is still in our brains which is why we need to have our minds renewed to the truth that is in Christ now. We are to put these away - unclothe ourselves with this kind of living. Eph. 4:22

Ephesians 4:22 (NASB)
[SUP]22 [/SUP] that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit,

The new man in Christ has been cut away from the body of flesh by the circumcision of Christ - of the heart. The Holy Spirit seals our inner new man in Christ from our flesh. Eph. 1:13 and Col. 2:11

Now we are alive unto God because we are "in Christ" and our true life is hidden with Christ in God. Romans 6:11 and Col. 3:3

When we rose with Christ in the resurrection of Christ - we have an emergent "new man" that is in Christ now - He is the last Adam. This "new man" that is untied with Christ as one spirit has been created in righteousness and holiness. Eph 4:24

Putting on the new man that is in Christ now is living by the faith of the Son of God - the Lord Jesus Christ. Put on Christ. "Be who you already are now in Christ" and this will manifest in our outward behavior.

This involves the renewing of the mind ( natural brain). Our transformation comes by the Holy Spirit as we behold the glory ( goodness - good opinion ) of the Lord as in a mirror. Romans 12:2 and 2Cor. 3:17-18

The putting on of the new man in Christ is really a manifestation of the life of Christ that is already in us as He bears His fruit in and through us. Without Christ - we can do nothing. John 15:5

Anyway...some random thoughts on this subject.

Re: PUT OFF THE "OLD MAN" AND PUT ON "THE NEW MAN": WHAT DOES THIS MEANS?

To observe law is a burden and even a curse to us as an "old man". God has set us free through Jesus Christ. The greatness of God is that His covenant is not difficult for us to follow (or rather it may be difficult but still it's achievable to us). At the same time His Elect can be identified. He designed the New Covenant in a way that only His Elect is capable of following and following with joy and pleasure. We are thus the "new man" inside this Grace of God through Jesus Christ.
